The Las Vegas Golden Knights scored with just over three minutes left to steal game one from the Carolina Hurricanes in the Stanley Cup Finals on the road.

Game one of the Stanley Cup Finals between the Carolina Hurricanes and the Las Vegas Golden Knights was an instant classic.

In a back-and-forth battle which featured both teams holding leads for significant portions of the game, a late goal from Knights Center Tomas Hertl with just over three minutes left was the decider.

The statistics of the game tell the story of a close matchup. The Hurricanes had more shots, 27-23, while the Golden Knights had the edge in hits 35-26.

Carolina got off to a hot start off the back of winger Nikolaj Ehlers, who scored two goals in the first period, including a goal within the first 30 seconds of the game. Vegas was able to rally, scoring three consecutive goals after a 2-0 deficit to take the lead in the second period.

From there, both teams scored two goals, including the late goal from Hertl. The Hurricanes went to an empty net with around two minutes left in the game. Good looks at the goal from the Hurricanes' Shea Theodore and Seth Jarvis were blocked, sealing game one.

Game two is on Thursday, June 4, at 8 p.m. ET at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Hurricanes will try to even the series score in front of their home fans.

The Las Vegas Golden Knights score a massive goal with just over three minutes left in the third period to take the lead.

Tomas Hertl scored the snap shot shortly after winning the face-off against Logan Stankoven. Carolina will likely need to go empty net to tie up the game.

Carolina Hurricanes Tie the Game Off Gostisbehere Goal - 8:41 3rd - 10:38 p.m. ET

Shayne Gostisbehere ties the game for the Carolina Hurricanes after a controversial icing moved the face-off back into the Golden Knights zone.

The goal comes off the Hurricanes killed a Golden Knights penalty. The fans at Lenovo Center have suddenly come back into the game.

Mark Jankowski is called for his second penalty, a delay of game, after hitting the puck over the glass. Vegas now has the chance to take a two-goal lead with just 10 minutes left in the period and momentum.

The early moments of periods continue to be eventful. Vegas doesn't score at the end of their power play, but Brett Howden is able to deflect the puck into the net off the shot from Shea Theodore.

His shot is able to sneak past Frederik Andersen as the Golden Knights capitalize on yet another turnover from the Carolina Hurricanes.

With the Las Vegas Golden Knights and the Carolina Hurricanes tied heading into the third period, game one of the Stanley Cup Finals could be headed towards a classic finish.

The Carolina Hurricanes dominated the start of the game before the Golden Knights took control in the 2nd period. Over the last seven minutes of the period, the two teams have gone back-and-forth in a close, competitive affair.

Vegas had shut the Hurricanes down in the 2nd period, but a Golden Knights turnover leads to a goal from Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal off the assists from K'Andre Miller and Jordan Martinook. The game is back at three goals apiece.

The Golden Knights momentum comes to a halt as the crowd at the Lenovo Center is back on their feet.

A delayed penalty on the Carolina Hurricanes gives the Golden Knights their first power play opportunity of the Stanley Cup Finals. Mark Jankowski is called for hooking against William Karlsson.

Vegas Takes Their First Lead of the Stanley Cup Finals - 15:24 2nd - 9:24 p.m. ET

Mitch Marner finds William Karlsson in front of the net for the Golden Knights third consecutive goal and first lead of the game.

Two goals in the last four minutes of the game have completely altered the game. The Hurricanes were physical in the first half but three goals in similar fashion put the underdogs on top.

Ivan Barbashev evens up the game just 30 seconds into the 2nd period off of the dish from Jack Eicheland and assist from Brayden McNabb.

The Hurricanes dominated throughout most of the 1st period, yet the game is all square after the massive response from Vegas. The mood in Raleigh has shifted dramatically.

Golden Knights Path to the 2026 Stanley Cup Finals

The Golden Knights ended the regular season at the top of the Pacific Division with a record of 39-26-17 and 95 points.

They defeated the Utah Mammoth in the first round 4-2, winning game six in a 5-1 blowout. In the second round, Vegas defeated the Anaheim Ducks 4-2, winning two consecutive games after the series was tied at 2-2.

In the Western Conference Finals, the Golden Knights swept the Colorado Avalanche despite entering the series as underdogs.

Vegas continues their path towards the Stanley Cup at 8 p.m. ET.

Carolina Hurricanes Path to the 2026 Stanley Cup Finals

The Hurricanes controlled the Metropolitan Division in the regular season, finishing with 113 points, the most in the Eastern Conference. It’s the second-highest points total for the Hurricanes since franchise relocation in 1997.

Carolina has been dominant throughout the playoffs, sweeping the Ottawa Senators in the first round and the Philadelphia Flyers in the second round.
