Switzerland and Sweden national hockey teams faced off for a Thursday night IIHF World Championship quarterfinal match in Zurich.

The undefeated Swiss hosted the 4-0-0-3 Swedes at Swiss Life Arena to cap off the day's action and the Swiss had control almost the entire way.

Winners of Thursday's quarterfinals will be re-seeded and faceoff in the semifinals on Saturday, May 30.

Canada defeated USA 4-0 and sent them packing while the northern neighbors move on to Saturday.

Puck drop was set for 2:20 p.m. ET between the two legendary hockey nations.

Tempers Flare In Final Moments - 0:25 3rd

Berglund and Andrighetto crossed the line according to the officials, getting called for roughing.

Last Chance For Sweden, Empty Net - 3:30 3rd

Sweden brought out the extra skater and sent their netminder off the ice with three and a half left to go. The third period has been much better for the visiting team but they might have fallen too far to make up the ground and survive to the semifinals.

Thurkauf Sent In Again But Sweden Stopped - 13:53 3rd

Thurkauf went to the box to put Sweden on the power play again after getting called for roughing. Sweden is in desperation mode looking for a way past Genoni.

Sweden returned to the ice with nearly a minute of power play remaining on the clock but they were unable to convert before it fell off.

Egli Called For Tripping - End of 2nd

In the waning moments of the second period, Sweden went on the man-advantage as they look to halt the Swiss team's momentum and get their own offense going.

It's been all Switzerland, though, with 12 shots on goal and just 3 for Sweden.

Joel Persson was called for tripping to send the Swiss on their first power play with the lead.

Thurkauf scored on the power play to give the Swiss the two-goal lead and get the crowd going yet again.

Nico Hischier and Roman Josi had the assists.

Sunqvist Goes Down After Knee On Knee By Meier - 5:47 2nd

Sunqvist took a knee on knee hit from Timo Meier to send both skaters to the ice. Meier and Johansson went to the box in the resulting play after the retaliation due to the hit.

Malgin Shoots And Scores! - 7:00 2nd

SUI 2, SWE 1

Swiss have their first lead with the Denis Malgin goal. The raucous crowd was willing it into existence, standing and dancing coming out of the previous break and the Swiss team followed with their own.

Malgin skated through the Swiss defense and forced the issue uncontested with a nice lift past Hellberg.

Thurkauf Goes To The Box, Swiss Kill It Off Though - 15:22 2nd

Tripping is the call as Thurkauf heads to the box to give Sweden the power play. The Swiss were able to kill it off though. Sweden spent quite a bit of time in the zone but couldn't find a look they liked.

Sweden and Switzerland return to the ice, now flipped for the long changes as the middle period commences.

Tied Up After Exciting Opening Period - End of 1st

Sweden opened the scoring to stun the home crowd but then they got going again with the Roman Josi goal.

The Swiss led in offensive chances, tallying 13 shots on Magnus Hellberg. Sweden put up 7.

Roman Josi scored his fifth of the tournament to give Switzerland a goal and tie it up. It's been an incredibly entertaining opening period between these two historic hockey nations as the physicality picks up and the energy hits a maximum.

Sundqvist Kicked-In Goal Called Off - 8:32 1st

It was a chaotic few seconds that ended in Sweden thinking they took the two-goal lead. Genoni mishandled the puck and didn't know it was behind him. It rolled into the paint and Sundqvist kicked it into the net.

Dean Kukan Booted, 5 Min Power Play - 13:12 1st

Swiss player Dean Kukan had a goal and four points and he's no longer on the ice for the home team after it was deemed he cross-checked Ivar Stenberg to the face with an intent to injure.

Linus Karlsson Strikes First - 13:39 1st

After an uncharacteristic breakdown of the Swiss defense, the Swedish offense waited and beat Genoni five hole for the opening goal to try to quiet the arena.

The loyal Swiss have not stopped singing on their team as they put the first three shots on net.
