Alex Ovechkin's time with the Washington Capitals is nearing its end.
The Capitals captain announced Monday that the 2026-27 season will be his final NHL season, bringing an end to a 22-year career with the franchise. Ovechkin enters his final season as the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer with 929 goals and as the player who led Washington to its first Stanley Cup championship in 2018.

Ovechkin's departure will leave an enormous hole in Washington's lineup, but the Capitals have spent the past few years building a younger core that can carry the franchise into its next era.
Ryan Leonard Could Become Washington's Next Star Forward
Leonard is already showing signs of becoming one of Washington's most important young players.
The 21-year-old forward was selected No. 8 overall by the Capitals in the 2023 NHL Draft and broke through as a full-time NHL player last season. He recorded 20 goals and 25 assists for 45 points in 75 games, finishing third among NHL rookies in power-play points and 5-on-5 goals.
Washington rewarded Leonard with an eight-year, $84 million contract extension in September, a clear indication of how important the organization believes he can become.
Leonard also showed why the Capitals are excited about his future in the team's 2026-27 season opener. He scored in Washington's 5-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes, answering a Sebastian Aho goal just eight seconds later to restore a four-goal lead.
Leonard is not going to replace Ovechkin's goal-scoring production overnight, nor should Washington expect him to. But his combination of scoring ability, physicality and age makes him one of the most logical candidates to become a centerpiece of the Capitals' offense after Ovechkin retires.
Ilya Protas Gives The Capitals A Young Center
Ilya Protas represents a different part of Washington's future.
The 20-year-old forward was selected in the third round of the 2024 NHL Draft and made his NHL debut last season after an impressive year with the Hershey Bears. Protas recorded 29 goals and 37 assists for 66 points in 69 AHL games, earning the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award as the AHL's rookie of the year. He also produced four points in four NHL games.
Protas entered the 2026-27 season projected to center Washington's third line, giving the Capitals another young player expected to take on a larger role as the roster transitions beyond Ovechkin.
At 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds, Protas also gives Washington considerable size down the middle. His development could become especially important as the Capitals look to replace the production and leadership that will eventually leave with Ovechkin.
Protas has already made an impact in the NHL this season. In Washington's season-opening win over Carolina, he assisted on Cole Hutson's first-period goal.
Cole Hutson Could Anchor The Next Generation On Defense
Cole Hutson gives Washington another potential cornerstone, this time on the blue line.
The Capitals selected Hutson No. 43 overall in the 2024 NHL Draft and signed him to a three-year entry-level contract in March. He arrived in Washington after a standout sophomore season at Boston University, where he recorded 32 points in 35 games and led the Terriers' defensemen in several offensive categories.
Hutson made his NHL debut late last season and entered 2026-27 as one of the young players expected to have an immediate role for Washington. NHL.com identified him as one of the Capitals' top prospects entering the season, noting that he was ready to make an impact on defense.
He wasted little time making that impact.
Hutson scored in Washington's season-opening 5-2 victory over Carolina, taking a pass from Protas and beating Brandon Bussi at 11:33 of the first period.
Hutson's offensive ability from the blue line gives Washington another weapon as the franchise prepares for life without its longtime scoring leader.
The Capitals' Next Wave Is Already Here
Ovechkin's retirement will mark the end of one of the most significant eras in Capitals history, but Washington does not have to start its next chapter from scratch.
Leonard has already established himself as a young NHL scorer and received a long-term commitment from the organization. Protas is beginning to carve out a role down the middle after dominating the AHL. Hutson is emerging as a young offensive defenseman capable of contributing immediately.
None of them will replace what Ovechkin has meant to Washington. His 929 goals, 2018 Stanley Cup and two decades as the face of the franchise are impossible to replicate.
But if the Capitals are going to remain competitive after Ovechkin's final season, these three players will be among those asked to lead the way.
The next era in Washington has already begun.
