Switzerland national men's hockey team took on Finland in the pinnacle game of the ultimate test of hockey skill outside of the Olympics: The 2026 IIHF World Championship gold medal game.

Swiss Life Arena and more than 10,000 fans set the backdrop as the two teams took the ice for four periods of play after two weeks of multiple rounds of play. They were the only game to end in regulation time without a single goal—and it made every minute worth it.

The Swiss entered the arena undefeated and with the best special teams in the tournament. They've been 95% on the penalty kill, allowing just one goal. They are also 39% on the man-advantage.

Finland has been fantastic all tournament as well, knocking out Canada from gold medal contention along the way.

Their only loss was in the preliminary round to the Swiss in which Aleksander Barkov's two goals weren't enough to overcome the hosts' four.

Helenius Scores The Golden Goal For Finland, Defeats Switzerland

Finland last won the tournament in 2022 and after it was all said and done, they did it again with a goal from Konsta Helenius after 10 minutes of 3-on-3 overtime.

J.J. Moser set up the screen to beat Swiss goaltender Leonardo Genoni, who recorded 26 saves.

Justus Annunen earned a shutout with 22 saves for the win.

Switzerland didn't trail for more than seven minutes of play during the entire tournament, their most impressive performance at the World Championships by far as they stomach yet another silver medal on home ice.

The puck is down as Finland and Switzerland battle it out in 3-on-3 sudden death for the gold.

Both teams had chances that struck the iron in the first four minutes of overtime.

A 4-on-4 was brought about by a Kontsa Helenius high sticking penalty.

Annunen used his glove to make an amazing save on Josi who attacked the crease with speed and tried to backhand it down low to break the tie.

Finland got yet another chance with a man-advantage after Calvin Thurkauf was called for tripping.

Swiss Called For Delay of Game, Weather The Storm - 14:03 3rd

Marti heads to the box for flipping the puck straight into the crowd—delay of game. The Swiss continued their impressive penalty kill performance and allowed no shots on goal during the advantage for Finland.

This overflowing Zurich crowd is ready to see a goal. We'll see if it's the Finns or the Swiss who are able to convert first.

Swiss Pushing The Issue - End of 2nd

With the crowd at their back, the Swiss were pushing hard to break the scoring drought before the end of the second. They had 9 shots on goal to Finland's 2 in the second.

Annunen made a few great stops but it was huge blocks from the Finnish defense that kept the Swiss out of their net.

Damien Riat was called for cross-checking in front of the Swiss net on Anton Lundell.

Finland goes on the man-advantage, they have five shots so far on the power play.

Finland Escapes 5-On-3 - 17:52 2nd

The Swiss managed just one shot on goal during the full 5-on-3. Finland turned the puck quickly as Lundell left the box and sent them flying for a chance on Genoni, but Hischier was there for the backcheck.

Switzerland returns with a 5-on-3 as they look to break the stalemate.

Chaos Breaks Out At End Of Period - End of 1st

It got completely out of control in the final moments of the period after Josi tried to send a shot down on Annunen. The Swiss moved the puck deep and drove the crease which drew out Finland's best brawler tactics.

Tripping was called for Vaakanainen and Anton Lundell was called for roughing. Meier collided with someone along the way but he was not penalized.

It's been almost entirely Finland's period, offensively.

The Swiss will return with almost two minutes of a 5-on-3 to start the second period.

Dean Kukan was called for tripping Hameenaho near the boards to send the Finns back on the power play and get to continue pressuring Genoni.

The play was called a goal on the ice but it was called back after a short review. Barkov's stick was clearly above the crossbar.

Now it's Switzerland's turn to get called for interference—Calvin Thurkauf was sent to the box just a minute after the last penalty kill ended for sending Konsta Helenius to the ice.

Swiss gets the first power play of the game after Aatu Raty sent Timo Meier head over heels to the ice.

The Swiss put up one shot during the power play.

It's still scoreless after the first six and a half minutes, although Finland's offense has shown up on time.

Puljujarvi and Maatta combined for a nice chance that the Swiss netminder had to bring down.

Lundell Already Creating Havoc - 18:36 1st

Lundell was in Genoni's face as he tried to stir something up to get the game going for the Finns. He got a brief talking to from the official after the play.
