CCHA Power Rankings: No. 19 Michigan Tech Huskies Make A Sta...

A win, a loss, a tie and an overtime loss are not the No. 11-ranked Mavericks’ fashion, but pulling points in three of four games is a step in the right direction toward another conference title.

Welcome to FloHockey’s bi-monthly power rankings for CCHA hockey. Find out which of the CCHA’s eight teams rise, fall or stay put as the weekly series unfold in the 2022-2023 season.

1. Minnesota State | Last Ranking: 1

Record: 4-1-2-1 (8-5-1 overall)

A win, a loss, a tie and an overtime loss are not the No. 11-ranked Mavericks’ fashion, but pulling points in three of four games is a step in the right direction toward another conference title.

A reconstructed offense from the 2022 runners-up still is looking for consistency, posting just two goals in three of their past four games.

Behind 11-goal David Silye, the finishing has been slow, with only two other players sitting above three goals through the first 14 games.

2. Michigan Tech | Last Ranking: 5

Record: 5-2-0-3 (9-3-3 overall)

Currently sitting atop the CCHA, the No. 19-ranked Huskies are 3-0-1 since the last rankings and riding a six-game point streak. They took four of six points against Minnesota State last week.

The Huskies’ next opponent sits just five points back, with two games in hand, as they prepare for a home-and-home with Northern Michigan this week.

3. Bowling Green | Last Ranking: 3

Record: 5-3-0-2 (6-8 overall)

The Falcons are tied with the Mavericks for second place, and despite the Mavericks having two games in hand, being tied with the national powerhouse is a good place to be.

A six-game losing streak was offset by a four-game winning streak. It ended when the Falcons lost the second end against Ferris State.

Lake Superior State comes next for what should be easy points this week.

4. Northern Michigan | Last Ranking: 2

Record: 3-3-2 (9-7 overall)

A home-and-home with first-place Michigan Tech is on the docket for this week. The Wildcats are primed to steal some points after splitting their last series with Minnesota State.

Freshman goaltender Beni Halasz has been impeccable for the Wildcats, and his 7-6 record is only indicative of the team’s last four losses coming with just one goal in support.

Consistent offense will have NMU eyeing a deep season.

5. Bemidji State | Last Ranking: 5

Record: 2-1-2-1 (5-4-3 overall)

With just six conference games on the season, the Beavers’ .611 win percentage is more in tune with their play than their fifth-place standing.

Upcoming series with St. Thomas and Lake Superior State put 12 massive conference points on the table against the conference’s teams with the two lowest win percentages to date.

6. Ferris State | Last Ranking: 6

Record: 1-2-2-1 (4-6-2 overall)

The Bulldogs are grabbing points more often than not, taking away some standings stock every week, including their most recent 4-1 win over Bowling Green.

An away series at Minnesota State and home series against Northern Michigan are next. Building momentum won’t be easy, but it’s an opportunity to take some points away from those ahead of them.

7. St. Thomas | Last Ranking: 7

Record: 3-6-1 (4-12 overall)

The Tommies’ sweep of Lake Superior State is not only their first D-I sweep, but first two-game winning streak in the program’s D-I history.

Their fourth win on the season eclipsed last year’s total, and they still have 19 games more on the regular-season schedule.

Confidence should be an all-time high, and an upcoming trip to a meticulous Bemidji State team comes next.

8. Lake Superior State | Last Ranking: 8

Record: 0-5-1 (1-9-2 overall)

Another pair of losses has the Lakers winless in their past six games, the latest coming as a sweep by St. Thomas. One goal over their past three games has the offense struggling to bring goal support.

Ethan Langenegger has provided a .911 SV% and has allowed just two goals in his past three starts.

Louis Boudon and company will need to find more offense to help lift the Lakers’ average of 1.9 goals per game.
