College Hockey Power Rankings: Sparty Back On Top
FloHockey's every-other-week power rankings for the 2024-25 men's college hockey season.
FloHockey college hockey reporter Jordan McAlpine delivers power rankings every other week for Division I men's college hockey over the course of the 2024-25 season.
1. Michigan State 15-2-1 (Previous Ranking: 2)
The Spartans closed out the first half with a bang, earning a 5-3 win and 3-3 tie – which MSU won the shootout – at Minnesota. The Spartans followed it up by winning the Great Lakes Invitational last weekend too, beating Northern Michigan (2-0) and Western Michigan (3-1). Despite missing goaltender Trey Augustine (DET) and Maxim Strbak (BUF) at the WJC, the Spartans won their first GLI since 2009. Isaac Howard (TBL) had three points (2-1-3) at Minnesota and scored in both games at the GLI.
2. Minnesota 15-3-2 (PR: 1)
Speaking of Minnesota, the Gophers will try to avenge that loss as they host Mercyhurst to open the new year. The loss was Minnesota’s first in regulation since Nov. 16 and snapped a seven-game unbeaten streak (5-0-2), and Minnesota was a perfect 8-0-0 in conference play heading into the series. Minnesota still sits atop the Big Ten standings and is averaging four goals per game, which is tied for the NCAA lead. Brodie Ziemer (BUF) had three goals against MSU and has eight on the season.
3. Boston College 12-3-1 (PR: 3)
Boston College defeated UMass Lowell last time out to improve to 8-0-0 on home ice. BC remains unbeaten over its last four (3-0-1) and is 5-1-1 since mid-November, and the Eagles are one of four teams tied for second in the Hockey East standings. That win over UML came on Dec. 9 and they won’t play again until Jan. 10, giving them plenty of time to recover and gear up for the second half.
4. Western Michigan 11-4-1 (PR: 6)
The Broncos were the runner-up at the GLI, sneaking past Michigan Tech with an overtime win and going toe-to-toe with Michigan State. Captain Tim Washe delivered yet again and his overtime tally was his fifth game-winner of the season, which is tied for the NCAA lead. WMU opens the new year atop the NCHC standings and they’re still allowing just 1.9 goals per game – which is tied for fourth nationally. WMU extended head coach Pat Ferschweiler through April of 2030 earlier this week too.
No one better to lead this program! The best coach in college hockey is right here in Kalamazoo!

5. Providence 14-3-2 (PR: 7)
Providence went into the break with a sweep of Colorado College and returned with a pair of wins at the Ledyard Classic – beating Northeastern (3-1) and Dartmouth (5-3). The win over Dartmouth gives Providence a seven-game win streak and the Friars have scored the nation’s fourth-most goals (63) through 19 games. Sophomore Graham Gamache is coming off a three-point weekend (2-1-3) and Tanner Adams netted his team-leading ninth of the season.
6. Maine 12-3-2 (PR: 4)
The Black Bears closed out 2024 with a clunker, falling 4-2 against Bentley. The loss ended a five-game win streak and 6-0-1 stretch for Maine, and it was just the second time they’ve allowed four or more goals this season. However, Maine still sits atop the Hockey East standings with 18 points and has out-scored its opponents 66-30. Maine ranks third in both goals scored (3.9) and goals allowed (1.8) per game.
7. Denver 14-4-0 (PR: 5)
Denver closed out 2024 with a clunker too, but thankfully it won’t show on their record. However, the exhibition garnered plenty of attention, as DU was stunned by an ACHA program in UNLV. Denver trailed 5-1 after two periods too before salvaging a 6-6 tie and eventually falling in a shootout. Even without the UNLV game, it’s been a tough stretch for the Pioneers, as they’re 2-4-0 over their last six. Although they haven’t been easy tests at Western Michigan and with a home-and-home against Colorado College, DU has cooled off significantly from its 12-0-0 start. Senior Jack Devine (FLA) continues to lead the NCAA with 27 points (2-25-27).
8. Colorado College 10-5-1 (PR: 9)
The Tigers handed UNLV an 8-0 loss (exhibition) the next night and split that above-mentioned series with Denver to finish the first half. CC trailed 3-0 in Game 1 but responded with five unanswered goals, holding on for a 5-4 win in front of a raucous home crowd. The Tigers took an early lead in Game 2 as well and had a number of chances, but ultimately fell short in a 2-1 road loss. CC is 2-5-1 over its past eight games. However, they’ve all been against ranked foes (Denver, Providence, St. Cloud State and Western Michigan) and seven of the eight have been decided by one goal or less.

9. Minnesota State 14-4-2 (PR: 11)
Luke Strand’s club has quietly been one of the nation’s best, as Minnesota State has won six straight and currently owns an 11-game unbeaten streak (9-0-2). MSU’s last regulation loss came on Nov. 1 and the Mavericks sit atop the CCHA standings, and they’re playing well in all three zones. MSU continues to be among the nation’s best defensive teams and is allowing an NCAA-best 1.5 goals per game, coupled with offensive contributions from several players.
10. Michigan 11-6-1 (PR: 8)
The Wolverines closed out the first half with a win over Wisconsin, which snapped a three-game skid. Michael Hage (MTL) delivered the game-winner 1:21 into overtime and Cameron Korpi made 26 saves, lifting Michigan to its 11th win. Hage leads all NCAA freshmen with 10 goals and Michigan has scored 54 as a team, but they’ve been out-scored 14-3 over their past four games. The win over Wisconsin snapped a goal drought of nearly 12 periods.
11. UMass Lowell 10-4-2 (PR: 12)
UML went 1-1-2 over its final four games before the break but went toe-to-toe with Boston College and won nine of its previous 11, including a six-game win streak. The River Hawks have the nation’s fifth-best power play (27.1) and are averaging 3.3 goals per game, which ranks 7th. Mirko Buttazzoni has four goals over his past three games and the freshman has 14 points through 16 games.
12. St. Cloud State 11-7-0 (PR: 10)
The big question continues to be Isak Posch’s injury and how much that’ll hurt the Huskies heading down the stretch. SCSU was swept at North Dakota before the break, although Gavin Enright played well in Posch’s place and made 63 of a possible 69 saves. Austin Burnevik (ANA) is currently with Team USA at the WJC but had a terrific first half with a team-leading nine goals and 16 points in 17 games.
13. North Dakota 11-7-1 (PR: 15)
The Fighting Hawks carried a four-game win streak into the break, including that sweep of SCSU, and are 6-1-1 over their past eight – giving them a .632 win percentage. Despite dealing with a throng of injuries and surviving multiple nerve-racking wins, Brad Berry’s club sits in a good position and is second in the NCHC standings with 17 points. Sophomore defenseman Abram Wiebe has six points (2-4-6) over his past four games and is tied for second on UND’s roster with 14 points.
14. Ohio State 13-4-1 (PR: 16)
The Buckeyes ripped off four consecutive wins before the break, sweeping Penn State and Notre Dame on home ice. OSU out-scored PSU in the series, 8-2, and hung on for a pair of nail-biters over the Irish – 2-1 (OT) and 3-1. Senior defenseman Brent Johnson (WSH) delivered the overtime winner and OSU’s first goal in the series-clincher, and the Bucs are one win shy of last season’s total.

15. Boston University 9-7-1 (PR: 14)
The Terriers suffered a 7-5 loss at Yale last Sunday, as BU allowed five goals over the final 40 minutes. After hanging a combined 10 goals on Merrimack and Notre Dame in Ireland, BU has allowed 13 goals over its past three games, losing two. Despite fighting to stay above .500, junior Quinn Hutson continues to be a bright spot and has points in seven of his last nine games, totaling 6-7-13 in that stretch. Freshman defenseman Cole Hutson (WSH) is also coming off a two-goal game but is currently vying for a gold medal with Team USA.
16. Arizona State 8-7-1 (PR: NR)
The Sun Devils own a five-game win streak and are coming off a pair of exhibition wins over the NTDP too, although neither will count. ASU turned heads in late November, sweeping Denver at Magness Arena, and followed it up with a home sweep of UMD to close out the first half. ASU is currently third in the NCHC and has scored 19 times in its five-game streak, while holding their opponent to two or fewer goals in four of the five. Another reinforcement is on the way too, as Wisconsin transfer Cruz Lucius (PIT) took warmups in the first exhibition game.
