College Hockey Power Rankings: Michigan State Spartans Surge...

FloHockey's every-other-week power rankings for the 2024-25 men's college hockey season.

FloHockey college hockey reporter Jordan McAlpine delivers power rankings every other week for Division I men's college hockey over the course of the 2024-25 season.

1. Michigan State 9-1-0 (Previous Ranking: 3)

The Spartans are coming off a sweep of Notre Dame and remain unbeaten in conference play at 4-0-0. Michigan State’s lone loss remains to Boston College, a team the Spartans beat the following night. They’ve scored four or more goals in five straight games – six if you include their exhibition win over the NTDP last week – and freshman forward Shane Vansaghi remains hot with six points (3-3-6) over his past four.

2. Minnesota 12-2-0 (PR: 4)

The Gophers also swept Notre Dame last time out, earning 6-3 and 5-3 wins in South Bend, and split a home-and-home with Bemidji the week before – despite out-shooting the Beavers 39-21 in a 3-1 loss. Minnesota’s 4.3 goals-per-game rank second in the country, trailing only Denver’s 4.4, and Brody Lamb (9) and Connor Kurth (8) remain among the NCAA leaders. Both forwards scored in Saturday’s 5-3 win while Jimmy Snuggerud (STL) stayed hot with a five-point (2-3-5) weekend.

3. Denver 12-2-0 (PR: 1)

The biggest surprise of the college hockey season came in the Mile High City this past weekend as Denver was swept by Arizona State. The Pioneers, who were voted the unanimous No. 1 in the country last Monday, were gunning for their 22nd consecutive win and had scored four or more goals in 11 of their first 12 games, along with not allowing more than two. However, the Sun Devils handed DU 3-2 and 5-2 losses. Carter King scored both goals in Friday’s loss.

4. Boston College 9-3-0 (PR: 2)

BC split a home-and-home with Northeastern last weekend and fell to UConn the week prior, 5-4. Both of which are currently unranked. There was also an overtime win over Providence sandwiched between. However, tempers flared in that UConn loss, as sophomore goaltender Jacob Fowler (MTL) was handed a game misconduct and a one-game suspension for roughing. At the same time, Fowler responded with a 28-save shutout – his fourth of the season – in the win over Northeastern and Ryan Leonard (WSH) has scored in six straight. Leonard is tied for the NCAA lead with 11 goals.

5. Maine 8-2-2 (PR: 6)

The Black Bears continued their impressive start by earning four points against struggling, yet talented Boston University – winning 5-2 and forcing a shootout – and a 3-1 win at New Hampshire. Albin Boija continues his stellar play between the pipes as Maine has allowed two or fewer goals in nine of its first 12 games. Junior forward Owen Fowler also has three goals and an assist over his past three games.

6. Michigan 9-2-1 (PR: 7)

Michigan will get another big test this weekend with a home-and-home against Western Michigan. The Wolverines are winners of six straight and have exploded offensively in that stretch, out-scoring BU, Notre Dame and Penn State by a combined 32-19. Freshman Michael Hage (MTL) had seven points (3-4-7) this past weekend while junior forward T.J. Hughes had six (5-1-6), as Michigan earned 6-5 and 10-6 wins at Penn State. Michigan also netted eight power-play goals in the series, including six on Saturday.

7. Western Michigan 8-1-1 (PR: 11)

Speaking of Western Michigan, the Broncos jump four spots thanks to a pair of good weekends against Colorado College and UMD. Pat Ferschweiler’s club is 5-0-1 to open NCHC play, four of those six games coming on the road, and still has just one regulation loss. The goaltending tandem of Cameron Rowe and Hampton Slukynsky (LAK) continues to shine while captain Tim Washe is coming off a three-goal weekend and has five over his past five games.

8. Colorado College 9-2-1 (PR: 8)

The Tigers suffered their first loss of the season at WMU and their second this past weekend against St. Cloud State. However, CC has played four straight one-goal games against two of the NCHC’s top teams and went to overtime in three of them. Kaidan Mbereko continues to give CC a chance every night and owns both the nation’s sixth-best GAA (1.56) and save percentage (.940). He earned his second shutout on Saturday with 27 saves in the 1-0 win over SCSU.

9. St. Cloud State 9-4-0 (PR: 13)

SCSU finished the month of November at .500 (3-3-0) but those losses came to Boston College (twice) and Colorado College. At the same time, the Huskies have gotten contributions from all over the lineup, Isak Posch has been good in net and they’re also allowing just 1.8 goals per game. Brett Larson’s club earned the above-mentioned split at CC last time out – winning 3-2 on Friday and falling in overtime in the finale, 1-0.

10. Cornell 4-2-2 (PR: 5)

Cornell drops five spots after a 1-2-1 showing over its last four games. The Big Red were unbeaten through their first four and squandered some of that momentum, although both losses and the tie came against ranked foes – Dartmouth, Harvard and Quinnipiac. Cornell responded with a 5-0 win over Princeton and will try to even the score with Quinnipiac next time out.

11. North Dakota 7-6-0 (PR: 10)

It certainly wasn’t stress-free, but the Fighting Hawks got the job done this past weekend against Robert Morris with 4-3 (overtime) and 1-0 wins. North Dakota continues to be decimated by injuries – captain Louis Jamernik being the latest addition to the list – but has still won four of its last six. UND’s power play (12-for-41) continues to find success and ranks fourth in the NCAA at 29.3%, and freshman Sacha Boisvert (CHI) has scored in three straight.

12. Providence 8-3-2 (PR: 12)

The Friars stay put at 12, but Providence has also had an interesting two weeks. Providence split a home-and-home with UMass, followed up by a pair of overtime contests. The Friars fell to Boston College in OT last Tuesday, 3-2, and snuck by LIU on Saturday, 4-3. They’ll need to play with more consistency moving forward and for a team with plenty of weapons, Nate Leaman’s club has scored two or fewer goals in four of their last six games.

13. Minnesota State 10-4-2 (PR: 14)

It’s been the Alex Tracy show in Mankato as the junior goaltender has already been named the CCHA Goaltender of the Week three times. The Mavericks have allowed an NCAA-best 1.5 goals per game and Minnesota State has out-scored its opponents 40-24. MSU is unbeaten over its last seven (5-0-2) and swept Michigan Tech in Houghton last weekend. Junior forward Adam Eisele had a three-point weekend while Tracy turned in another 53 saves.

14. Ohio State 9-2-1 (PR: 15)

Ohio State responded to its first losses of the season by earning a road sweep at Lindenwood, 5-2- and 3-2. Sophomore forward Riley Thompson had five points (2-3-5) while graduate forward Gunnarwolfe Fontaine had three goals and an assist on the weekend. OSU continues to creep closer to its win total from last season (14) and will now head to Princeton before closing out the first half with back-to-back home series against Penn State and Notre Dame.

15. Boston University 6-5-1 (PR: 9)

BU is currently 2-4-1 in the month of November and although the Terriers earned a 6-3 win over Merrimack last time out, it’s certainly been a disappointing stretch. Especially after the 4-1-0 start. As for the win over Merrimack, Matt Copponi (EDM), Cole Eiserman (NYI) and Brandon Svoboda (SJS) all scored twice, while Mathieu Caron made 36 saves. BU’s next game is against the Warriors too in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

16. Dartmouth 5-0-1 (PR: 16)

Although UMass-Lowell and Arizona State are right on the cusp, the Big Green stay put, as Dartmouth remains unbeaten. Dartmouth made another solid impression last weekend too – handing Cornell a 4-3 loss, followed up by a shootout loss to Colgate on Saturday. However, Saturday’s loss goes down as a 4-4 tie. Nikita Nikora and Cooper Flinton (TBL) both put together four-point weekends (1-3-4) while sophomore goaltender Roan Clarke made 53 saves.
