1. Boston University
With a team full of returnees from last year’s Frozen Four team, most notably Hobey Baker Top 10 finalist Lane Hutson (MTL) on defense, the Terriers are building. Adding the potential No. 1 pick for the 2024 NHL Draft in Macklin Celebrini, a top-tier defenseman in Tom Willander and a key transfer in net – former Brown netminder Mathieu Caron – BU has reason to believe they’re the team to beat.
2. Quinnipiac
The defending national champs lost a lot off of their team from last season, most notably top defenseman Zach Metsa and goalie Yaniv Perets. The Bobcats are returning, however, three of their top four scorers including Collin Graff who is the most productive player from last season returning to college hockey this year. QU has the style and the personnel to push, but the goaltending question is a big one.

3. Boston College
Owners of the No. 1 recruiting class in the country, BC brings in three first-round picks who all scored over 50 goals last season at the National Team Development Program – Will Smith (SJS), Ryan Leonard (WSH) and Gabe Perreault (NYR). They’re also bringing in a top-tier goalie in Jacob Fowler, while also returning top scorer Cutter Gauthier. The Eagles will be young, but they’re going to have a ton of skill.
4. Denver
The Pioneers are always going to be competitive and this year should be no different. DU has a solid blue line led by Shai Buium (DET) and Sean Behrens (COL), while they’ll also be returning top scorer Massimo Rizzo (PHI). A lot of freshmen and sophomores will be looked to carry parts of this team’s offense but there’s enough talent in that group to do it.
5. Minnesota
The Gophers sustained some incredible losses in the offseason with a decisive blow when Logan Cooley opted to turn pro late in the summer. With a blue line decimated by NHL departures, Minnesota will be without one of their most veteran defensemen for the early portion of the season as Mike Koster (TOR) was sidelined with injury. Despite the losses, Minnesota has a number of key returnees, most notably sniper Jimmy Snuggerud (STL) up front and boast an impressive recruiting class including two first-round picks Oliver Moore (CHI) and Sam Rinzel (CHI).

6. Michigan State
Sparty is most definitely back. The question that remains, however, is if they’re going to be too young yet to push the top teams. With one of the top recruiting classes in the country led by 2024 Draft hopeful Artyom Levshunov and goalie Trey Augustine (DET), MSU also brought in key transfers Isaac Howard (TBL) and Red Savage (DET). This team has more balance and should have more scoring pop, too.
7. Merrimack
What can I say? I'm a believer in the Mack. The Warriors made a push last year and grabbed just their third NCAA tournament berth in the program’s DI history and so much of that roster is back next season including top scorer Alex Jefferies (NYI) and, most importantly, their high-end goalie tandem of Hugo Ollas (NYR) and Zachary Borgiel. No one will be sleeping on them this year.

8. Michigan
The Wolverines lose Hobey Baker winner Adam Fantilli, top defenseman Luke Hughes and goalie Erik Portillo to NHL deals, among others, but still have plenty of quality up and down their lineup. Frank Nazar (CHI) should be in line for a breakout year while Seamus Casey (NJD) should soften the loss of Hughes on the back end. The Wolverines did some work in the transfer portal and will have a number of higher-impact rectuits to fill holes.
9. Michigan Tech
The Huskies have experience, they have some additional scoring ability and they have one of the nation’s best and most experienced goaltenders. Blake Pietila is back for a fifth year of eligibility and if he continues to play as he has over the last two seasons, Tech will never be out of any game.

10. North Dakota
The Fighting Hawks often looks good in the preseason, but I’ve got a lot of questions left about them. No one really knows how their goaltending and defense are going to hold up this year, but this team should be able to score. Up front, they’ve got legit threats in Jackson Blake (CAR), Riese Gaber and top incoming freshman Jayden Perron (CAR).
11. Cornell
A tournament team last year, Cornell’s abrasive, defensive style is going to wear teams down. The ECAC should be especially competitive this year with Cornell making a big push. Goalie Ian Shane is back and the Big Red are bringing in Ryan Walsh (BOS) as a freshman after he finished second in the USHL scoring race last year.
12. St. Cloud State
I’m not quite yet sure what to make of the Huskies, but I like their blue line led by Jack Peart (MIN) and Dylan Anhorn, and goalie Dominic Basse (CHI) is returning for his final year of eligibility. This team doesn’t have a lot of star power, but they’re an interesting enough collection of talent to compete in the NCHC.
13. Western Michigan
The Broncos lost so much scoring last season as their entire top line got signed to NHL contracts. That said, the Broncos were active in the portal adding Sam Colangelo (ANA) from Northeastern and getting a late addition in Alex Bump (PHI) from Vermont. They should score and Western always has teams that can defend. They need goaltending to be rock solid for them to compete which wasn't always a guarantee last season.
Another big-time player coming to Kalamazoo! Alex Bump is a Bronco!

14. UConn
Returning leading scorer Matthew Wood (NSH) who went on to become a first-round draft pick last summer, the Huskies should have plenty of scoring pop. They also have a solid goaltender in Arsenii Sergeev (CGY) and added transfer Ethan Haider (NSH) for some depth between the pipes. Hockey East could be wide open this year and the Huskies should be in the hunt.
15. Notre Dame
The Irish are one of the teams I’m keeping a close eye on as a little bit of a dark horse this year. Goalie Ryan Bischel was outstanding last year and is back again. There’s a bunch of veterans that are going to help this team including Landon Slaggert (CHI) and transfer Patrick Moynihan (NJD), but I particularly like the freshman forward additions like Cole Knuble (PHI) and Danny Nelson (NYI) who should provide some needed skill to the attack.

16. Northern Michigan
The Wildcats were dangerously close to winning the Mason Cup last season in the CCHA and return a ton of the team’s top performers from last season including leading scorer Andre Ghantous and the productive Artem Shlaine (NJD). Additionally, goalie Beni Halasz came into his own as last season progressed and should be viewed as one of the top goalies in the conference this season.
