The Worcester Railers enter the 2026-27 ECHL season with the first affiliation change in franchise history. Worcester is now connected to the St. Louis Blues and the AHL's Springfield Thunderbirds under a new agreement running through 2030-31, creating a St. Louis Blues → Springfield Thunderbirds → Worcester Railers development structure.
The Railers play at DCU Center and began ECHL play as an expansion organization in 2017. They enter their new era looking for improvement after going 35-30-5-2 with 77 points and missing the playoffs in 2025-26.

For Blues fans, geography makes the relationship especially interesting. Springfield and Worcester are less than 50 miles apart, and St. Louis specifically cited that proximity as an advantage for development and scouting.

With Springfield and Worcester separated by less than 50 miles, organizational movement can take place within a geographically compact AHL-ECHL setup. Assignments, transactions and scouting will be particularly relevant as the partnership begins.
It is a significant change for Worcester. The St. Louis agreement, which runs through 2030-31, ends the Railers' eight-season affiliation with the New York Islanders organization.
There is even a historical bridge between the organizations. Former Railers goaltender Colten Ellis later reached the NHL through the Blues organization, although his Worcester tenure came before this new affiliation.
Defensemen Will van der Veen, Cam McDonald, Adam Samuelsson, Michael Suda and Vincent Corcoran are among Worcester's current roster listings. They should not automatically be considered Blues prospects.
For St. Louis fans, Worcester offers a new development relationship whose proximity to Springfield makes it particularly worth monitoring from its first season.
