The New Mexico Goatheads will make their ECHL debut in 2026-27, giving Colorado Avalanche fans a brand-new team and development relationship to follow. The expansion club is affiliated with the Avalanche and the AHL's Colorado Eagles under a new multi-year agreement.
Based in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, the Goatheads will play at Rio Rancho Events Center under head coach Zack Stortini. There is no previous New Mexico season to evaluate — 2026-27 is the franchise's first.

Why Avalanche Fans Should Watch New Mexico Goatheads
The new Colorado Avalanche → Colorado Eagles → New Mexico Goatheads structure represents what the research describes as the league's purest blank-slate development story.
Colorado identified having an ECHL affiliate as an important part of its development structure. That means every initial Colorado or Eagles assignment to New Mexico will become part of the Goatheads' first chapter. Which players receive those assignments will depend on NHL and AHL roster decisions and should not be predicted before they happen.
New Mexico does have confirmed ECHL-side players to follow. Jake Chiasson recorded eight points in 14 ECHL games with Allen last season, while Maksim Barbashev had 21 points in 50 ECHL games and made three AHL appearances with Tucson. Veteran Tyler Drevitch entered New Mexico with 297 career ECHL games, while Aaron Chiarot also signed after gaining ECHL experience in 2025-26.
For Avalanche fans, the appeal is unique: They can follow an entirely new affiliate as Stortini blends veterans, developmental players and future organizational assignments during the franchise's first season.
