Here's what Canucks fans should know about Vancouver's AHL and ECHL affiliates entering 2026-27.
Who Are The Vancouver Canucks' AHL And ECHL Affiliates?
The Abbotsford Canucks are Vancouver's AHL affiliate, while the Kalamazoo Wings serve as the organization's ECHL affiliate.
Abbotsford provides Vancouver with an AHL development home in British Columbia, while Kalamazoo gives the organization another professional destination in the ECHL.
A New Era Begins For The Abbotsford Canucks
Abbotsford enters 2026-27 with new leadership.
Ryan Papaioannou takes over as head coach after leading the Wheeling Nailers to a 46-20-3-3 record, an ECHL North Division title and an appearance in the Eastern Conference Finals last season.
He replaces Manny Malhotra, who was promoted to become Vancouver's head coach.
Richard Seeley also takes over as Abbotsford's general manager after spending eight seasons with the Ontario Reign.
Abbotsford opens its 72-game schedule Oct. 2 at Calgary before playing its home opener Oct. 17 against the Coachella Valley Firebirds.
Vancouver Canucks Prospects To Watch In Abbotsford
Braeden Cootes: Vancouver's No. 15 overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft played three NHL games last season before returning to the WHL. The 19-year-old will compete for a Vancouver roster spot but is considered more likely to begin the season in the AHL.
Sawyer Mynio: Mynio recorded three goals and 21 points in 58 games during his first full professional season and was named Abbotsford's Rookie of the Year. The 21-year-old defenseman enters 2026-27 looking to earn his first NHL opportunity.
Ilya Safonov: Vancouver signed Safonov to a one-year, two-way contract after seven seasons in the KHL. The 25-year-old forward recorded 16 goals and 33 points in 68 games last season and is expected to begin 2026-27 with Abbotsford.
Jonathan Lekkerimäki: The 2022 first-round pick scored 13 goals and recorded 20 points in only 21 AHL games last season while also appearing 13 times for Vancouver. After undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery in February, Lekkerimäki is expected to be ready for 2026-27 and could push for a larger NHL role.
Another Abbotsford Name To Know
Forward Ben Berard provides a strong example of Vancouver's minor-league development path.
Berard spent most of 2024-25 with Kalamazoo before moving up to Abbotsford, where he led the Canucks with 20 goals last season and represented the team at the AHL All-Star Classic.
He's back on an AHL contract for 2026-27.
Who Are The Kalamazoo Wings?
The Kalamazoo Wings are Vancouver's ECHL affiliate and provide another professional level below Abbotsford.
Head coach and director of hockey operations Joel Martin returns to lead the K-Wings after Kalamazoo finished 36-30-3-3 last season.
Kalamazoo missed the Kelly Cup Playoffs, but Berard's rise from the K-Wings to becoming Abbotsford's leading goal scorer shows how the affiliate relationship can benefit developing players.
What To Know About Kalamazoo In 2026-27
This season will carry some extra significance in Kalamazoo.
The K-Wings are preparing for their final season at Wings Event Center, their longtime home, before the franchise moves into a new arena.
Kalamazoo is still assembling its roster ahead of training camp, so the full picture of which Vancouver and Abbotsford prospects could spend time there remains unsettled.
The K-Wings play their home opener Oct. 30 against the Toledo Walleye.
How The Vancouver Canucks' Affiliate System Fits Together
Kalamazoo provides developing professionals with opportunities in the ECHL, while Abbotsford represents the final minor-league step before Vancouver.
With new leadership in Abbotsford and prospects such as Cootes, Mynio, Safonov and Lekkerimäki pushing toward NHL opportunities, both affiliates give Canucks fans plenty to follow in 2026-27.
