The St. Louis Blues are bringing their minor-league system closer together in 2026-27.

The Springfield Thunderbirds return as St. Louis' AHL affiliate, while the Worcester Railers begin their first season as the organization's new ECHL affiliate. With less than 50 miles separating Springfield and Worcester, the Blues now have two development stops located just down the road from each other.

Here's what Blues fans should know about St. Louis' AHL and ECHL affiliates entering 2026-27.

Who Are The St. Louis Blues' AHL And ECHL Affiliates?

The Springfield Thunderbirds are St. Louis' AHL affiliate, while the Worcester Railers are the organization's new ECHL affiliate.

The Blues have been affiliated with Springfield since 2021, and their current agreement runs through 2030-31.

St. Louis announced its new Worcester partnership in June, also signing an agreement through 2030-31. The Railers replace the Florida Everblades as the Blues' ECHL affiliate.

Why Blues Fans Should Watch The Springfield Thunderbirds

Springfield enters 2026-27 with one of its most exciting prospect groups since becoming affiliated with St. Louis.

The Thunderbirds also have momentum after a postseason run that included an upset of regular-season champion Providence before Springfield reached the Atlantic Division Finals.

Head coach Steve Ott returns after signing a two-year extension during the offseason. He took over in January and helped turn Springfield's season around before its playoff run.

The Thunderbirds open their 72-game schedule Oct. 3 at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

St. Louis Blues Prospects To Watch With Springfield

  • Justin Carbonneau: The No. 19 pick in the 2025 NHL Draft scored 51 goals and recorded 80 points in 60 QMJHL games last season. After appearing in three Calder Cup Playoff games with Springfield, the 19-year-old is expected to begin 2026-27 in the AHL.

  • Adam Jiricek: The 2024 first-round pick recorded 59 points in 55 games for Brantford in the OHL before joining Springfield for six playoff games. The 20-year-old defenseman also is expected to start the season with the Thunderbirds.

  • Alek Kaskimaki: Kaskimaki is coming off a strong season that put him in position for an extended look during St. Louis training camp. The young forward is among a deep group of Blues prospects competing for opportunities this season.

  • Michael Buchinger: The defenseman remains under contract with St. Louis and gives Springfield another developing Blues draft pick on the blue line entering 2026-27.

More To Watch In Springfield

The Thunderbirds aren't relying entirely on prospects.

Springfield added T.J. Tynan, a two-time AHL MVP who has recorded more than 750 career AHL games. He joins a veteran group that includes captain Chris Wagner and defenseman Calle Rosen.

The mix of experienced AHL players and young Blues prospects could make Springfield one of the more interesting teams in the organization to follow.

Who Are The Worcester Railers?

The Worcester Railers begin a new chapter in 2026-27 as St. Louis' ECHL affiliate.

Worcester previously spent eight seasons affiliated with the New York Islanders before joining the Blues organization.

The Railers finished 35-30-7 last season, their second-best record in franchise history, and play in the ECHL's North Division.

Head coach and general manager Nick Tuzzolino leads Worcester into its first season connected to St. Louis.

Why The Worcester Railers Partnership Matters

Location is one of the biggest advantages of the new partnership.

Worcester and Springfield are less than 50 miles apart, allowing the Blues to move developing players between their ECHL and AHL affiliates more efficiently.

There's also some history here. St. Louis previously had an AHL affiliate in Worcester from 1994-2005 with the Worcester IceCats.

More than two decades later, the Blues are back in the city with a new affiliate and a development system concentrated in central Massachusetts.

How The St. Louis Blues' Affiliate System Fits Together

Worcester provides young professionals with an ECHL destination, while Springfield represents the final minor-league step before St. Louis.

With Carbonneau, Jiricek and several other prospects entering or approaching the professional ranks, the Blues' newly aligned affiliate system should give fans plenty to follow in 2026-27.
