Some of the most important pieces of the Philadelphia Flyers' future are developing less than 70 miles away.
The Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the American Hockey League (AHL) are the Flyers' primary minor-league affiliate, while the Reading Royals of the ECHL provide another professional development destination in Pennsylvania.
With several highly regarded prospects pushing toward Philadelphia, both teams give Flyers fans another place to watch the organization's future take shape in 2026-27.

Who Are The Philadelphia Flyers' AHL And ECHL Affiliates?
The Lehigh Valley Phantoms are Philadelphia's AHL affiliate, while the Reading Royals are the organization's ECHL affiliate.
The Phantoms play at PPL Center in Allentown, Pennsylvania, while Reading plays at Santander Arena in Reading, Pennsylvania.
The Flyers and Royals agreed to a new affiliation deal ahead of the 2025-26 season that runs through 2026-27, with an option for 2027-28.
Why Flyers Fans Should Watch The Lehigh Valley Phantoms
The Phantoms could feature several players with legitimate opportunities to eventually reach Philadelphia.
Defenseman Oliver Bonk is one of the biggest names to watch after playing 46 games for Lehigh Valley last season, recording six goals and 13 assists. The No. 22 overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft also made his NHL debut and appeared in a Stanley Cup Playoff game.
Bonk will push for an NHL role in training camp, so his return to Lehigh Valley isn't guaranteed.
Forward Alex Bump faces a similar situation. Bump recorded 26 points in 36 games with the Phantoms before playing 17 regular-season and six playoff games for Philadelphia. Like Bonk, he enters camp with an opportunity to earn a larger NHL role.
Philadelphia Flyers Prospects To Watch With Lehigh Valley
Jett Luchanko: The 2024 first-round pick enters the season coming off core muscle surgery. The Flyers aren't expected to rush the 20-year-old forward, making his development one of the organization's important storylines entering 2026-27.
Spencer Gill: Philadelphia's 2024 second-round pick is preparing for his first AHL season after dealing with significant injuries over the past two years. The 6-foot-4 defenseman finished 2025-26 strongly after returning to action and now gets his first full opportunity in professional hockey.
Cole Knuble: The former Notre Dame forward already has some experience with Lehigh Valley after joining the Phantoms late last season. Knuble can play both center and wing and enters 2026-27 looking to establish himself during his first full professional season.
Carson Bjarnason: The 2023 second-round pick enters his second professional season after splitting time between Lehigh Valley and Reading as a rookie. The goaltender showed promise early with the Phantoms before struggling later in the season, making 2026-27 an important year in his development.
What's New With The Lehigh Valley Phantoms In 2026-27?
John Snowden returns for his second season as Lehigh Valley's head coach after taking over the Phantoms ahead of 2025-26.
His roster could change significantly depending on which young players earn spots in Philadelphia during NHL training camp.
The Phantoms begin their 13th season at PPL Center on Oct. 3 against the Hartford Wolf Pack. Their schedule also includes familiar Atlantic Division rivals such as the Hershey Bears and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Who Are The Reading Royals?
The Reading Royals enter their 25th ECHL season in 2026-27 and their second under head coach and general manager Anthony Peters.
Reading reached the Kelly Cup Playoffs last season after finishing 36-26-8-2 with 82 points. The Royals entered as the North Division's No. 4 seed before their postseason ended against the Wheeling Nailers.
There was also plenty of movement between Reading and Lehigh Valley last season. Bjarnason spent time with both teams, while defenseman Jackson Edward is another player who could see action at both levels in 2026-27.
The Royals have already assembled much of their roster for the new season. Forward Nolan Burke returns after recording 27 points in 51 games last year, while Kyle Haskins is back after producing 28 points in 63 games.
Reading also recently acquired defenseman Wyatt McLeod, who was part of the Trois-Rivières Lions' 2025 Kelly Cup championship team.
The Royals open the season Oct. 16 on the road against the Greensboro Gargoyles before hosting the Kalamazoo Wings for their home opener Oct. 24.
