The two great hockey juggernauts of our time met once again, USA and Canada. It was a Thursday morning single elimination game, and Canada came out on top with a 4-0 shutout led by Jet Greaves between the pipes.

Team Canada was be ready with a vengeance after settling for Olympic silver and failing to reach a medal in the World Championships since their last title in 2023.

USA, 3-1-0-3 in the group stage, entered the game with an underdog mentality, featuring a roster with far less of the experience and star power as the roster that won in 2025.

They were almost eliminated from the tournament but for their 4-1 victory over Austria giving them the bump ahead of Germany into 4th. USA's power play has been a bright spot, going 7-for-20.

The last time these two faced off in the tournament was 2021 which resulted in the Canadians moving on to semifinals after a 4-2 win off of Andrew Mangiapane's pair of goals.

Sidney Crosby Scores First Goal Of World Championship - 1:14 3rd

To add to his 9 assists, Sidney Crosby finally netted his first goal and 10th point. It was an empty net goal for the 4th goal of the game over a struggling USA team.

Canada will move on to play in the semifinals on Saturday, May 30. Winners of today's games will be reseeded to determine who will take on the undefeated Canadians.

Connor Brown Scores Empty Netter - 1:59 3rd

On a set play off of a clean face off win, Connor Brown grabbed the puck and whipped it into the open net to seal the deal and make it a three goal game.

USA In Desperation Mode - 3:00 3rd

CAN 2, USA 0

Canada's top line is taking over offensive time in USA's zone as the game reached the waning moments. With just over two minutes left, USA pulled their goalie to add an attacker.

USA Pressures Greaves, Canada On Back Foot - 10:40 3rd

At the halfway mark of the third, Greaves has been called on multiple times to make great saves against the rushing American forwards.

The Canadians have left their netminder out to dry a bit while the Americans put the pressure on.

Coincidental minors came out for Wotherspoon and Leonard, taking both players off the ice but leaving things five-on-five.

Tkachuk Crosschecks Nurse, USA Killed It - 13:40 3rd

Canada went on their third power play of the game after Tkachuk was called for high sticking Darnell Nurse.

Tavares tried to walk right in and put a shot on but it was stuffed at the front of the net.

Third Period Underway In Fribourg - 20:00 3rd

And we're back for the final twenty minutes of regulation, single elimination hockey.

Canada Maintains Control After Forty - End of 2nd

Canada heads to the dressing room after the second period with a two-goal lead and a slight edge in offensive opportunities.

USA surged back as they looked to close the gap but they weren't able to get a clear enough chance at the net, and when they did, Greaves was there to make the stop.

Dylan Holloway Makes It 2-0 - 10:01 2nd

Holloway added his 4th point and 3rd goal of the tournament with a slow developing play. Ufko blocked Holloway's first attempt, but the Canadian quickly gathered it and sent it down low past the American netminder for the two-goal lead.

Whitecloud Slashes, USA On The Power Play - 14:13 2nd

USA gets a chance with the man-advantage after Whitecloud was called for slashing.

Canada Circling, Matching Penalties Come Out - 16:17 2nd

Much like the start of the first period, Canada has put up almost all of the shots to open the second (9-3).

Martone was called for embellishment and Clifton was sent for slashing. It'll stay 5-on-5.

We're back for the second twenty minutes of action between USA and Canada.

Canada Leads After 1 - End of 1st

It was a period that started out all Canada as they let fly the first 10 shots on goal with just 2 the other way for USA. An illegal hit by Ryan Lindgren on Evan Bouchard shifted the energy in the room, however, and the USA started taking over control.

By the end of the period, USA and Canada would both squander power play opportunities but it Sydney Crosby who drew a roughing call on Max Sasson to send out the Canadian power play unit for a second time.

Macklin Celebrini had time, space, and the puck in the slot and that's a nasty combination if you're Devin Cooley or a fan of USA hockey.

Canada took the 1-0 off of a delayed shot by Macklin Celebrini in the slot. He held the puck and wound up as he skated forward. His release beat Cooley by a mile.

Crosby Hit Up High, Another Power Play For Canada - 2:30 1st

CAN 0, USA 0

Sasson hit Crosby up high and was called for roughing which sent Canada on another power play. USA's bench was claiming that Crosby embellished it.

Canada had four shots on the five minute power play earlier.

USA On The Power Play, Canada Kills It Off - 3:24 1st

CAN 0, USA 0

Dylan Holloway was called for interference after laying a hit on Carlile to send the United States on their first power play of the game.

USA Kills Off 5 Minute Power Play - 8:32 1st

CAN 0, USA 0

Although Canada added another three shots on net, they weren't able to convert on the power play.

Ryan Lindgren Hits Bouchard Up High, Canada Power Play - 13:52 1st

CAN 0, USA 0

Bouchard went down hard after taking a hit up high while entering the zone with speed. Ryan Lindgren stuck his shoulder up which sent him Bouchard flinging to the ice, although it did appear their heads made contact as well. He had to be helped off.

Lindgren was assessed a 5-minute major and a game misconduct for a check to the head.

Canada Lays It On Thick, Gets First 7 Shots - 16:00 1st

It wasn't until four minutes into the game that Justin Faulk was able to send USA's first shot on to Greaves. It's been all Canada as they've had 7 of their own shots on goal to give Cooley a quick test.

Lindgren Flips Puck Out, USA Challenged - 19:14 1st

CAN 0, USA 0

Canada was off to a blazing start as Crosby went streaking into the offensive zone. Ryan Lindgren was called for delay of game after flipping the puck out. USA challenged the call, making the case that it deflected off of Celebrini's stick. The penalty was wiped off after review.
