Canada took on Slovenia in their second game in as many days as the squad aimed to add another preliminary round win in the 2026 IIHF World Championships.

Puck drop was set for 10:20 a.m. ET on Friday, May 22 at BCF Arena in Fribourg, Switzerland.

A day before, Norway led Canada until the third period, putting up the best fight of the tournament so far against the stacked Canadian roster. Mark Scheifele completed a hat trick with an overtime goal to give Canada the edge and add a fourth win in Fribourg.

Slovenia entered the day with just one win, a 3-2 overtime victory over Czechia in the opening game of the tournament. Marcel Mahkovec was the overtime hero, a 24-year old right winger that plays professionally in the International Central European Hockey League (ICEHL).

Canada made it out relatively unscathed, allowing just one goal to get past goaltender Jet Greaves with a minute remaining in the game. They scored three, with debutant Emmitt Finnie scoring the last, his first in a Canadian jersey at the international tournament.

Hockey Canada Extends Streak With 3-1 Win Against Slovenia In Fribourg

Although it wasn't as flashy as some of the other wins, Canada walked out of BCF Arena in Fribourg on Friday night with a win over Slovenia. It was their fifth of the tournament.

Canada led in offensive chances, putting up 32 shots on Slovenian goaltender Zan Us, who had 29 saves.

Denton Mateychuk opened the scoring halfway through the opening frame and Canada never looked back, holding the lead from then on. They extended with a Dylan Cozens delivery that was created by a Darnell Nurse stick-explosion combination pass through the slot.

Canada returns to the ice on Sunday, May 24 against Slovakia.

Slovenia Cancels Greaves' Shutout - 1:05 3rd

Greaves was just one minute and a relatively easy save away from getting out of the game with a shutout. On Slovenia's 14th shot, it was Rozle Bohinc who netted the shot, beating Greaves glove side.

Slovenia Power Play Killed Off - 5:02 3rd

CAN 3, SLO 0

After an extended delayed penalty that resulted in no shots on goal Slovenia went on the power play with a late chance to close the deficit to two.

Minten was called for slashing after the Slovenian defender's stick broke in the play.

Finnie Tips It In! - 13:15 3rd

The fourth line for Canada got going as the 20-year old Emmitt Finnie tipped in the pass-shot from Morgan Reilly to score Canada's third goal. It's his first tournament playing for Canada at the IIHF World Championships.

Germany Leads Hungary 5-1

Germany needed a win today for a chance to make it into the quarterfinals and they're doing it with a four goal lead over Hungary.

Slovenia Stops Canada's Power Play - End of 2nd

Magovac was sent to the box for slashing on Tavares tried a wraparound on Us. Canada is 2/12 so far in the tournament.

Vilardi was replaced by O'Reilly on the first power play unit. They spent almost all two minutes in Slovenia's zone, moving the puck with intention but just weren't able to find the clear lane to connect and beat Zan Us.

As the clock winds down on the middle frame, Canada looks in control and on the cusp of extending their lead in Fribourg.

Cozens Scores For Canada's Second Goal! - 6:46 2nd

For his fourth point of the tournament, Dylan Cozens scored the second goal for Canada under Us's glove. 

Nurse tried to send the shot first but his stick shattered and went flying in the air on the attempt, the puck made its way up to Cozens near the slot to score.

Canada Top Line Circling, Looking For Another - 10:20 2nd

After the first half of the period favored Slovenia slightly, Canada is surging back into control and forcing them onto their back foot.

Martone had a few great chances on Zan Us as the Canadians search for the second goal.

Slovenia has looked better than Canada to open the second, putting up 3 shots on goal to Canada's one.

Denton Mateychuk scored his second of the tournament with a beauty off the seam pass to the point. He rushed in to the slot and sent a wristshot in under Us's glove.

After the first ten minutes of the period, Canada has near total control of the ice as they throw their tenth shot on goal compared to Slovenia's one.

Zan Us has been rock solid so far, covering the puck and making necessary stops when the defense has been beat.

As the top line gets their second shift on the ice, you can see that Celebrini-Cozens-Crosby line is already getting their rhythm going. Us has had to be on his toes to stop the first two chances.

Slovenia was still searching for their first offensive opportunity five minutes into the opening period.
