Chicoutimi Celebrates First QMJHL Championship In 32 Years1:36

Canada defeated Denmark 5-1 in Fribourg, Switzerland in their third of seven 2026 IIHF World Championship preliminary round games on Monday, May 18.

Sidney Crosby was the player of the game with four assists.

The last time Canada and Denmark played each other in the IIHF World Championships, a Nick Oleson goal with 49 seconds left on the clock would deal the final blow in the quarterfinals to knock Canada out of the 2025 tournament. Oleson scored the only goal for the Danish.

This time, things were much different as Hockey Canada's elite NHL talent has found its rhythm on the larger, international ice following up preliminary round wins against Italy and Sweden.

They were tied for first with Slovakia in the group B standings after the opening weekend of the tournament.

Denmark's challenging schedule continued after taking three tough losses to great teams over the weekend—adding to a 4-1 loss against Czechia and 6-2 to Sweden. 14 players returned to the roster from their run to the bronze medal match in 2025.

Wotherspoon Scores, Gets His First Point - 0:20 3rd

Parker Wotherspoon finally gets a goal to go in after having chances in all three of Canada's games so far this tournament.

Crosby tallied a fourth assist, sending a beauty of a sauce over to Wotherspoon in the circle to beat Henriksen against the grain up high.

Denmark Pulls Netminder In Final Moments - 2:10 3rd

Denmark opts for the additional attacker as they try to get anything past Greaves to close down the deficit.

O'Reilly Puts In Another - 8:06 3rd

Crosby showed a masterclass in moving the puck around behind the net and protecting it from the Danish defender the whole way. He simply flipped the puck out front to Ryan O'Reilly who was there to convert the goal.

Oleson Scores! - 9:48 3rd

CAN 3, DEN 1

Right on the next whistle after writing the last update, Nick Oleson got his goal driving the crease and wrapping it around Greaves. He was able to beat the fourth line of Canada and bring the puck in from the edge without much issue.

Danish Almost Get Their First - 9:55 3rd

Nick Olesen almost had the icebreaker for the Danish as they stare down a three goal deficit. He was able to force Greaves to cover a loose puck and forced the issue in the crease as just half the period remains.

Mateychuk Scored On The Next Play! - 16:27 3rd

CAN 3, DEN 0

Canada scored its third goal in three minutes, two within 35 seconds with a beauty from Mateychuk through the five hole and over the line.

When it rains it pours!

The Danish team called a timeout after the goal.

Vilardi Strikes High, Gives Canada 2-0 Lead - 16:58 3rd

Gabe Vilardi has been everywhere this tournament and finally gets a goal, this time coming up big to fleece the Danish defense and beat Henriksen up high.

Martone Slams One In From Crosby - 19:24 3rd

Porter Martone joined Macklin Celebrini and Sidney Crosby to open the final period. Crosby added a final pass over to Martone across the slot to score.

Still Scoreless After Two - End of 2nd

CAN 0, DEN 0

It's an even match between the two teams that should be anything but when you look at their rosters. This Danish defensive play and goaltender have been fantastic at keeping Canada out of the net.

Offensive chances and zone time remain handily in favor of the Canadians, but that doesn't matter if they can't get a clear lane.

Canada Back On The Power Play - 1:33 2nd

Canada goes on their second power play, another dealt to Setkov who held Celebrini. They had two shots in their first power play.

Bouchard had a rocket that was bumped wide and bounced off the boards behind the net. Crosby came up with the bouncing puck and tried to force it in at the post but Henriksen was glued to it.

Celebrini Goal Gets Overturned - 7:28 2nd

The Danes were immediately watching the review for an offsides after Celebrini smacked home what looked like the first goal of the game.

The pass came from behind the net against the wall, where Sidney Crosby had worked it out.

After a short review, it was determined to be offsides due to Martone being over the line before Celebrini entered the zone with the puck.

Canada Kills Off Denmark's Power Play - 11:44 2nd

Denmark had their first offensive chances of the period with a power play brought about by a Porter Martone high stick.

They added three shots but Greaves was there to stop it.

Henriksen Making Stop After Stop - 14:06 2nd

The Danish goaltender has been lights out so far today making stops on Holloway, Crosby, Bouchard, and Tavares to open the second. Canada has been letting it fly.

Meanwhile In Zurich, Finland Beating USA 5-1

Although this game remains scoreless, Finland has now put up five goals on USA, the reigning IIHF gold medalists.

Denmark Kills Off Power Play - 19:00 2nd

Canada had about 40 seconds of power play which concluded with a bullet from Macklin Celebrini that Henriksen was able to glove down.

Cozens Sent Tumbling, Canada Power Play Held Up - End of 1st

CAN 0, DEN 0

The Canadian power play unit is 1-5 so far, we'll see if they can get it working against the stalwart Danish defense.

Canada moved the puck well but were unable to get any passes through the seam to get Henriksen on the move for a clear shot opportunity before the horn blew.

Canada outshot the Danish 14-5 and we remain scoreless after one.

Denmark Shows Strength - 2:42 1st

Denmark's defense has been physically tough and quick to react to the puck. They've kept the Canadian offense from getting too many clean looks at the net—Henriksen has been rock solid to open the game.

Henriksen Makes Big Stop - 8:01 1st

Cozens almost had a goal with a redirected shot into Henriksen's chest off the pass from the point.

Moments later, Wejse had a chance all alone on Greaves from a tight angle deep in Canada's end but sent the puck flying high and out.

Finnie Gets His First Shift Wearing Maple Leaf - 13:08 1st

He gets his first start for Canada in any IIHF tournament.

Goaltender Nicoljai Henriksen made the first saves of the game against Scheifele and Crosby.
