The second day of the IIHF World Championships continued in Fribourg, Switzerland with a morning match-up between Hockey Canada and Italy for Group B preliminary round play that resulted in a 6-0 routing by the Canadians.

Canada went into the second game of the 2026 IIHF World Championships tournament with wind in their sails after a 5-3 win over Sweden on Friday and they kept cruising.

Italy did not play on Friday, so they open their tournament against the likes of Sidney Crosby, Macklin Celebrini, and goal-scorer John Tavares.

Captain Celebrini scored two goals and an assist while John Tavares had two assists. Canada overpowered Italy's defense with more than 40 shots on goal, while allowing just 19 the other way.

The last time the two played was 2022, when Canada walked away with a 6-1 win. They scored six unanswered goals after the Italians broke the ice.

The top four ranked teams in each group after the preliminary round will move on to the tournament quarterfinals, making each game important.

Fadani Continues To Make Great Stops - 3:15 3rd

At this point, it's a miracle Canada hasn't been able to score in the third period with how much time they've spent in Italy's end. Davide Fadani has been stellar putting repeated stops up on Nurse, Celebrini, and Crosby.

Italy's offense has been able to get going more intentionally, putting up 7 shots on goal so far. Canada's continued their dominance, though, with 14.

Crosby, Celebrini Try To Connect For Hat Trick - 14:30 3rd

It feels like the top line is willing Celebrini to score the hat trick goal as Cozens and Crosby try to set him up in the high percentage spots.

Puck On The Ice For Third - 19:35 3rd

We're off into the final twenty minutes of this preliminary round game between Canada and Italy for points.

The shooting gallery is open once again as Celebrini let loose two more shots in the first two minutes of the period, tried to secure the hat trick no doubt.

Canada Stretches Lead To Six After Forty - End of 2nd

This Canadian team is looking dangerous as they piece together a masterpiece of a second period against the struggling Italian team.

They were able to double down on the pace of the first period and score another three goals without allowing Italy to launch more than four pucks at goaltender Cam Talbot.

O'Reilly Blows The Game Open, Scores Sixth Goal - 1:20 2nd

Ryan O'Reilly added another goal just seconds after Bouchard's for his third point of the tournament. Canada takes the six goal lead.

Bouchard Scores After 9 Seconds Of Power Play - 1:46 2nd

ITA 0, CAN 5

It did not take long for Evan Bouchard to find his first goal of the tournament after the Bradley power play began.

Talbot Taken Down, Bradley Into The Box - 1:55 2nd

ITA 0, CAN 4

Talbot fell down and was pushed out of the crease by Bradley which resulted in the puck making it out to a forward who shot it into the back of the net as Talbot lay there.

The play is under review but the call on the ice is no goal due to goalie interference.

The question at hand is whether or not Wotherspoon forced Bradley into the netminder. They determined the call on the ice stood.

Bradley went into the box as a result of the play.

Martone Back Out There With Crosby, Celebrini - 5:09 2nd

ITA 0, CAN 4

A whistle came after Fadani forced the net off its moorings. Coming out of the penalty kill, Martone bumped up to join the top line once again.

Whitecloud To The Box, Kills Off Italian Power Play -  6:03 2nd

ITA 0, CAN 4

Zach Whitecloud was called for tripping to send Italy on another power play.

Italy added just one shot on goal during the advantage.

Fadani Makes Huge Stop - 8:48 2nd

ITA 0, CAN 4

The speed picked up in the middle part of the period and it culminated in a great chance for Canada but Fadani was there to stick his leg out over the puck and stuff Vilardi at the doorstep to keep it from being 5-0.

Tavares Catches High Stick, ITA Kills It Off - 10:13 2nd

ITA 0, CAN 4

Purdeller heads to the box after Tavares took a stick under the visor for the first Canadian power play of the game.

It seemed like it was just a matter of time before Canada was going to score with all of the chances and pucks flying towards the Italian netminder.

After a number of good saves and blocks with the body, Italy was able to kill it off without letting it in.

Celebrini Backhands It In, Scores! - 17:51 2nd

ITA 0, CAN 4

Cozens was back out with Crosby and Celebrini and seconds later Captain Mack scored yet again. He beat Fadani by his head with an instant-touch backhand after the pass from Cozens. Crosby also earned an assist.

Italy vs Canada 2nd Period Underway - 20:00 2nd

ITA 0, CAN 3

Will Italy have a solution for this cruising Canadian offense? Canada killed off the power play to open the period.

Italian's On Power Play, Minten To The Box - End of 1st

ITA 0, CAN 3

The goal scorer Fraser Minten caught the Italian player up high to send them on their first power play of the game and try to close the gap.

Matt Bradley was able to put a puck on Talbot before the end of the period.

Martone To Celebrini For The Goal! - 3:37 1st

It looks like Martone was bumped up into Cozens' spot on the top line in the closing minutes of the period.

Canada looks like they've really found something here, scoring a goal with less than a minute of the line on the ice after the roster change.

Celebrini beat Fadani up high on the glove side from the right faceoff dot.

Darnell Nurse on the assist as well.

Minten, Brown Force In Another Goal! - 9:52 1st

ITA 0, CAN 2

And just like that, Canada is up by two goals within 30 seconds as Fraser Minten gets a goal.

Connor Brown earned an assist as did Mateychuk.

It was really Connor Brown who made the incredible move to the middle dragging the puck and then launching it at Fadani. Minten just swept it in more quickly after it got behind the netminder.

Holloway Scores! Canada Leads - 10:28 1st

ITA 0, CAN 1

After a few minutes of Canada's top line circling, the third line comes out to make it happen as Tavares and Holloway connect in Italy's zone to get a bouncing puck past Fadani.

Holloway scored a goal yesterday against Sweden, as did John Tavares and Ryan O'Reilly who earned the assists.

Italy Gets Their Own Chances - 13:06 1st

ITA 0, CAN 0

Cam Talbot looked frosty to open the game as Italy's offense gets going. The Italians had a push of their own as they evened up the shots on goal at 4.

Purdeller made a great move up the middle, breaking into the zone and getting a shot fired off that Bouchard was able to sweep away.

Celebrini, Cozens Almost Beat Fadani But He Covers - 14:58 1st

The Bouchard, Celebrini, Cozens line got working at the five minute mark, making it look easy to move the Italian defense where they wanted.

They had a few rebound chances as Fadani sat backwards off his skates. He was able to cover up before the puck went in, though.

Canada Hems In Italy To Start  - 17:17 1st

ITA 0, CAN 0

Canada is taking no time to get busy in Italy's end, throwing the first three shots on goal within three minutes of play.

Whitecloud, O'Reilly, and Scheifele had the opening attempts.

Italy, Canada Meet At Center Ice To Start - 20:00 1st

Cam Talbot steps in to the netminder position for Canada after Jet Greaves took care of the first game. Talbot played 34 games for the Detroit Red Wings in 2025-26 with a .883 SV% and 3.19 GAA.

Davide Fadani is in for Italy's first game of the tournament.
