Captain Macklin Celebrini and the Team Canada hockey team took on a familiar, Sweden, in their first preliminary game of the 2026 IIHF World Championships on the morning of Friday, May 15.

With Sidney Crosby a late add to the lineup, the squad is locked in and ready to take on the NHL-packed rosters of the international tournament field of 16 total teams.

Team USA opens group play against Switzerland at 2:20 p.m ET with a rematch of the 2025 gold medal match that resulted in the Americans' first title in the tournament in 92 years. 

The last time Sweden and Canada faced off, Travis Sanheim opened the scoring just 18 seconds into the game to give Canada an early lead that resulted in a 5-3 victory. 

They repeated that result with another 5-3 Canada win.

Sweden tied it up in the middle period but Dylan Cozens and Connor Brown scored in the third to deliver the win.

Celebrini Moves Inside, Draws Hook - 2:11 3rd

Canada heads back on the power play after Ekman-Larsson is called for hooking on Macklin Celebrini who received the setup by Crosby along the boards.

No goals added on the power play and that will be it for this opening game.

Cozens Scores, Makes It 5 - 7:01 3rd

CAN 5, SWE 3

Cozens flew with maximum speed towards the Swedish crease before turning around and shoving the puck towards the net.

Canada Pours On Pressure - 7:50 3rd

CAN 4, SWE 3

Canada had a push of more than three shifts in a row forcing Sweden into their own end without a clear. Canada's put up 7 shots to Sweden's 2.

Tavares had a clean look that Hellberg was able to make a good save on but the whistle came.

Canada Retakes Lead, Brown Scores - 16:30 3rd

Connor Brown gets his first point of the tournament. It came from a great pass play between Minten and Martone who found Brown across the ice to beat Sweden's goaltender.

Back For The Third - 19:45 3rd

CAN 3, SWE 3

Raymond and Stenberg combined for an odd-man rush to open the third period and continue Sweden's offensive momentum from the middle frame. They weren't able to score but came very close.

Game Tied After Explosive Second Period - End of 2nd

We've got a great game on our hands as Canada and Sweden head into the locker rooms with a tie game and some hot tempers after things got physical out there on the larger international-sized ice.

Sweden took over in shots on goal, tallying 14 vs. Canada's 8—who replicated their shot production in the first period.

Hits Flying, Tavares Takes Hard One - 2:21 2nd

Now that Sweden is in lockstep with the Canadians now, both teams are finishing hits into the boards and trying to get away with crosschecks in front of the net.

Puck Beats Greaves Before Collision In Crease - 5:44 2nd

Greaves was sent sprawling in the crease as an Ekholm shot flew past him, into the bar and the back of the net as Sweden tied it up at three.

Canada Strikes Back, Holloway Scores - 5:44 2nd

Team Canada came rushing into the Swedish zone with a purpose and it was Dylan Holloway who scored for the lead. Minten and DeMelo were on the assist.

Raymond Scores On The Power Play - 8:53 2nd

And just like that, Sweden ties it up after the Lucas Raymond goal on a clear faceoff win to start the power play.

It was Whitecloud who went to the box to set up the advantage.

Sweden Grabs Momentum, Scores - 11:32 2nd

After a few minutes of sustained pressure by the Swedes, Jacob Larsson was finally able to break Greaves and score with the assist by Jack Berglund.

Scrum Builds After Whistle, Wotherspoon To The Box - 14:49 2nd

Stenberg, Bjorck, and Berglund got a chance on the power play after Wotherspoon was called for a penalty.

Just one shot came from Sweden on the power play as they look for their first goal.

O'Reilly Called For Crease Violation - 18:50 2nd

CAN 2, SWE 0

O'Reilly rushed the net for an offensive chance and tried to skate away from the netminder but found himself tumbling over backwards into Hellberg. No penalty was called but the faceoff came out of Sweden's end as a result.

Second Period Is Live! - 19:50 2nd

CAN 2, SWE 0

Canada returns to the ice with the man-advantage. Greaves and Hellberg returned to their spots in the crease on the opposite ends of the arena.

The power play came to an end without much for Canada.

Sweden had a chance, as Silfverberg threaded the puck between Greaves' legs.

Canada To Return In 2nd On Power Play - End Of First

CAN 2, SWE 0

Johansson was called for high sticking, trying to lift a stick and catching the Canadian defender up high.

The power play is looking much better on this attempt, as passes find tape despite shots finding bodies. They'll be back on the power play after the intermission with just over 30 seconds remaining.

In group A play this morning, Finland is beating Germany 1-0 at Swiss Life Arena.

O'Reilly Scores! - 4:00 1st

Ryan O'Reilly scored the second goal of the game for Team Canada with Vilardi and Reilly on the assist. Hagg was called for hooking but the goal cleared the penalty.

Stenberg To The Box, SWE Kills It - 5:24 1st

CAN 1, SWE 0

Stenberg crosschecked Nurse into the boards deep in Canada's end which was reviewed for a potential major penalty.

During the hit, Stenberg was immediately apologetic. Nurse appeared to be fine after the hit, even laughing on the bench. Despite how awkward it looked.

After the review, it was deemed a minor penalty for crosschecking. Canada gets the power play.

Crosby, Scheifele, Celebrini, Vilardi, and Bouchard are on the first power play unit.

Canada was circling but Sweden had their own chance shorthanded the other direction after getting a clear.

Sweden Scores But Goal Overturned For High Stick - 8:05 1st

CAN 1, SWE 0

Stenberg reached up to deflect a shot by Hagg into the net which was initially called a goal but it was immediately put under review.

Ivar Stenberg did not celebrate, knowing how high his stick was. Eventually, the officials came out to overturn the call on the ice.

Canada Up By One After First Ten - 9:33 1st

CAN 1, SWE 0

Canada held on to a one goal lead for the first half of the period after the early dagger by Tavares. Crosby had a clear scoring chance with Scheifele at the backdoor with an open net but the pass couldn't connect.

Crosby and Celebrini have been dangerous, forcing turnovers and creating chances every time they are on the ice.

Canada Kills Off First Swedish Power Play - 14:49 1st

CAN 1, SWE 0

Mateychuk was called for tripping Ekman-Larsson to send Sweden on the power play. Sweden wasn't able to get set up as Canada tried to (and successfully) establish their penalty killing unit as a strength in the tournament.

Tavares Scores Opening Goal - 17:39 1st

Nurse made a great pass over to John Tavares flying into the Swedish zone where Tavares slung the puck into the open net behind Hellberg.

The first shot led to the first goal.
