The two heavyweights that spent the entire season chasing the same destination have finally arrived.

The No. 1 overall Moncton Wildcats and the No. 2 Chicoutimi Saguenéens are set to meet in the 2026 QMJHL Final, a matchup that feels less like a surprise and more like the collision course many expected from opening night.

For months, both organizations separated themselves from the rest of the league. Now, after surviving very different semifinal battles, they’ll face off with a Gilles-Courteau Trophy on the line.

Moncton enters the series with home-ice advantage after finishing first overall during the regular season, but the defending champions had to earn their return to the final the hard way.

After cruising through the opening two rounds without a single loss, the Wildcats were finally pushed to the brink by the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada in a dramatic seven-game semifinal series. The turning point came in heartbreaking fashion for Moncton in Game 6, when the Armada scored in the final second to force a deciding game back in New Brunswick.

The response from the defending champions was emphatic.

Moncton punched its ticket Tuesday night with a dominant 6-2 victory on home ice, showcasing once again the offensive depth that made the club so dangerous all season long.

Six different Wildcats players are producing at a point-per-game pace or better this postseason, with five of them being forwards. Leading the charge is Gabe Smith, the Utah Mammoth fourth-round pick who has exploded for 24 points, including 14 goals, in just 15 playoff games.

On the back end, elite defenseman Tommy Bleyl continues to strengthen his case as one of the most impactful players in the league. Recently named QMJHL Defensive Player of the Year, Bleyl has piled up 21 points while logging massive minutes in every situation.

And while much of the spotlight throughout the playoffs has followed Chicoutimi netminder Lucas Beckman, Moncton’s Rudy Guimond has quietly matched him step for step.

Guimond trails Beckman only narrowly in nearly every major statistical category, setting up what could ultimately become the defining battle of the series: elite offense on both sides backed by two goaltenders playing at championship-caliber levels.

If Moncton’s path back to the final was about resilience, Chicoutimi’s was about confirmation.

The Saguenéens secured their place in the championship round Sunday night with a 6-3 victory over the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, winning the semifinal series in six games and reaching the QMJHL Final for the first time since 1997.

Unlike Moncton, however, the “Bleus” looked vulnerable at times during the series.

After allowing only six goals combined through the first two rounds, Chicoutimi surrendered 15 against Rouyn-Noranda. Yet every time questions surfaced about their defensive structure, the Saguenéens answered with offense.

They scored 23 goals in six games against the Huskies, and after Rouyn-Noranda evened the series 2-2 in Game 4, it felt as though another switch flipped inside Chicoutimi’s dressing room.

From that moment forward, the Saguenéens looked once again like the complete powerhouse that dominated the regular season.

Their special teams continue to operate at an elite level, with the power play clicking above 34 percent while the penalty kill sits near 86 percent entering the final.

And then there is Beckman.

Acquired to stabilize a team already viewed as a contender, the Chicoutimi goaltender has elevated the Saguenéens into something even more dangerous. Through 14 playoff starts, Beckman owns a staggering 1.43 goals-against average, a .933 save percentage, 12 wins and three shutouts — numbers that have positioned him as arguably the frontrunner for playoff MVP honors entering the final.

Now, the stage is set.

The defending champions against a historic franchise chasing its first title in more than three decades.

The league’s deepest offense against the postseason’s hottest goaltender.

And after an entire season spent proving they were the class of the QMJHL, the Wildcats and Saguenéens will finally settle it head-to-head.
