On home ice, with a chance to take a commanding 3-0 lead, Sherbrooke instead found itself dragged into a chaotic, emotionally charged battle — one that ultimately slipped away in a 2-1 loss to the Shawinigan Cataractes. In Game 4, Shawinigan tied the series in a dramatic double-overtime win.
A series defined by inches
For stretches, it still looked like Sherbrooke’s series to control.
Kyan Labbé continued to erase mistakes, carrying over the form that had allowed just two goals through the opening two games. And even in defeat, he remained spectacular — turning aside 55 of 60 shots in Game 4, a performance that gave Sherbrooke every chance to close out the game. At the other end, Mathys Fernandez matched him, reinforcing what this series has consistently shown — neither side is giving anything away.
Even when Sherbrooke grabbed the lead, it never felt decisive. When the game slipped into chaos — missed calls, scrums, momentum swings — it didn’t break the series open. It simply tightened it further.
Sherbrooke head coach Gilles Bouchard acknowledged how quickly things can turn at this time of year: “We had momentum early in the second period. Then a lot of things happened… but that’s playoffs. There’s emotion, and anything can happen.”
That unpredictability has become the defining thread of the matchup.
The difference: who adapts
If anything, Game 3 didn’t change the identity of the series — it reinforced it. Low margins. High emotion. No room for hesitation.
For Shawinigan head coach Daniel Renaud, the adjustment was simple in theory, difficult in execution:
“If we want to generate offense, especially with Labbé playing the way he is, we have to pay the price — get to the net and create second chances. Right now, everything he sees, he stops. So our job is to take his eyes away and win those battles around the crease.”
That approach eventually paid off — not through a clean play, but through persistence. A loose puck. Traffic. A moment seized.
Exactly the kind of goal this series has been trending toward.
A moment — and a message
And no one is embodying that shift more than rookie forward Olivier Charron.
After scoring the Game 3 winner, Charron elevated his impact even further in Game 4 — tying the game late to force overtime before setting up the winner in double overtime.
Talk about seizing the moment.
“Honestly, it’s just incredible. I can’t really explain what went through my mind. I was just really happy to score that goal. We’ve worked so hard all season for moments like that, to be able to deliver when it matters.”
It wasn’t just a breakout performance. It was a statement.
A series that’s living up to it
This was always expected to be one of the closest matchups of the opening round. Three games in, it’s delivering exactly that. Not through dominance — but through tension, through swings, through moments that could go either way.
The series now shifts back to Shawinigan on Friday night, with the Cataractes reclaiming home-ice advantage — at least on paper. Because so far, that hasn’t meant much. Through four games, the home team has yet to win.
And if that trend holds, then nothing about this series is predictable — except one thing:
Nothing in this series is settled.
