Michigan Takes 5-1 Win Over Bentley To Open NCAA Hockey Tournament

WILD FINISH: Bentley Scores Game 1 OT Win After Massive Net-Front Scramble1:49

Michigan hockey and Bentley University were set to open Albany Regional play in the 2026 NCAA hockey tournament on Friday, March 27.

The top-seeded and top-ranked Wolverines took a huge step forward on the path to the 2026 Frozen Four with their first win, a 5-1 routing over the Bentley Falcons who were left searching for any open lanes through the impressive defense.

Michigan's penalty kill unit was perfect on the night, going 5-for-5 with 24 saves for the star netminder Jack Ivankovic.

The game was their fourth time playing each other and first time since 2012. Michigan has taken each victory.

Big Ten Player of the Year T.J. Hughes extended his a six-game point streak with a goal and two assists.

Helledy Nets One To End Ivankovic's Shutout - End of 3rd

After almost 60 minutes of Bentley begging for an opportunity, it was Helledy with an assist from Upson to put one on the boards and steal Jack Ivankovic's shutout with just 27 seconds remaining.

Things Get Out Of Control In Waning Seconds - 0:41 3rd

Spence was called for interference which drew a retaliatory hit from Bentley to send both players to the box with less than a minute to go.

Will Horcoff Leaves The Bench - 3:31 3rd

Michigan's injury woes continue as No. 24 overall draft pick in 2025 Will Horcoff heads down the tunnel to the locker room. He has 37 points this season with 24 goals and 13 assists.

Duke Heads Back To Penalty Box, Michigan Kills It - 7:00 3rd

The Falcons go on the power play yet again as Tyler Duke heads to the box for the third time this game as he continues his extracurricular activities.

The best chance came right as the advantage ticked off the clock. Davis was looking for a rebound but Ivankovic went left to right and swallowed up the puck delivery from Salo to bring out the whistle.

Schifsky Goes Bar Down - 12:10 3rd

Bentley 0, Michigan 5

Schifsky received the pass from Hady from dot to dot. Schifsky nailed the top bar to give Michigan their fifth goal of the tournament.

It's his 13th goal of the season.

Duke, Mesic Get Roughing Penalties - 15:26 3rd

Bentley 0, Michigan 4

Behind the play, Duke and Mesic went at it which drew out the whistles to bring out 4-on-4 play.

Bentley Falls Short On Another Power Play - 16:59 3rd

McKinney was called for holding to give Bentley an early hand up.

Michigan's Schifsky had a shorthanded chance the other way. Swedin used his noggin to make a pointed save.

Hjartarson was the first to get one on the Michigan goaltender as Bentley tries to set an aggressive tone in the third.

Michigan Favors Defense With Comfy Lead

Bentley tried their best to strike back in the second period but Michigan is just too strong on both sides of the ice. The Falcons added 13 shots in the middle frame but Jack Ivankovic handled them with ease.

Bentley also evened up faceoff wins in the second—16 total for both.

Moldenhauer and Muscutt added two goals to make it a four-goal lead for the Wolverines in the middle of the period.

Bentley Player Shoots Puck After Offsides Whistle - 3:40 2nd

Some more pushing and shoving after the whistle when a Bentley player sent the puck flying wide of the net after the whistle that came after a clear offsides by Davis.

Michigan Kills Bentley's 4th Power Play - 5:20 2nd

Michigan was called for a penalty to give Bentley an opportunity to bring it back within three.

Duke was sent in for boarding—a sign of the physicality picking up as well.

Bentley's puck movement gave them time to set up but their looks haven't pressured Ivankovic—most from the perimeter.

Michigan's defense in the middle is stifling and jumps on Bentley's mistakes constantly.

Muscutt Forces It In Off Hughes Delivery - 9:11 2nd

Muscutt, a freshman and midseason addition for the Wolverines out of Louisiana, scores his third of the season.

Michigan extends their lead to four goals as Bentley's hopes slip through their fingers.

Moldenhauer Pots It On The Power Play - 12:58 2nd

Bentley 0, Michigan 3

Finnish Sophomore Oliver Salo put Michigan back on the power play after delivering a hard hit from behind. The top power play unit in college hockey got back to work quickly.

Michigan was circling and could smell blood but the blocks were coming out in a big way for Bentley.

Pressure reached an all-time high for the trailing Falcons at the halfway point of the game before Moldenhauer found the time and space to elevate the puck high from the faceoff dot.

Perron was all over the place moving the puck around for the Wolverines in impressive fashion, he earned an assist as did T.J. Hughes.

Ivankovic Gets Swiped - 14:40 2nd

Bentley drove the crease and brushed past Ivankovic's mask on a save. The whistles came out after some shoving but no penalties were called.

Bentley Kills Off Power Play - 15:00 2nd

Larsen was called for holding to send the Michigan power play unit out for the first time of this 2026 NCAA tournament. The top power play in the country, although it was missing Michael Hage.

Moldenhauer launched a cannon but it went wide left. Horcoff let it fly on a one-timer but Swedin made the save for an easy clear by the defender.

Second Period Underway - 20:00 2nd

Bentley tries to move on from the late second goal and get their offense going on a very good Jack Ivankovic.

Hjartarson won the faceoff against Hughes to open the middle period.

Robertson Slings It In At The Buzzer - End of 1st

In what seemed like a harmless play from the blue line, Robertson launched a snapshot past Swedin for the two-goal lead. Officials reviewed the play and it went in with 1.2 seconds remaining. A good goal.

It's his first goal as a player on the Michigan Wolverines.

Andy Jones Likes Bentley's Start - 3:07 1st

ESPNU showed an interview with Bentley's head coach Andy Jones, "I liked our start, I thought we started on time."

He mentioned how his team has been managing the middle of the ice effectively and keeping Michigan out of the center with speed.

Rheaume-Mullen was called for hooking to send Bentley on the first power play of the game just seconds after the goal.

Michigan is 79.2% on the kill.

Bentley is 22.1% on the advantage.

They were able to get a few shots on but Michigan did not allow the Falcons to set up their offense.

T.J. Hughes Opens Scoring Off The Turnover - 10:11 1st

T.J. Hughes was dealt the puck in the slot after a turnover was collected by Perron (CAR).

Shots flew early from Eernissee as Michigan takes the early lead with offensive chances. Swedin bumpered away a few to open up rebound opportunities but no one was there to convert.

Bentley's had their own offensive chances but UM's defense was able to keep the lanes closed.

Merritt had a great opportunity heading into the first TV timeout after a turnover by Michigan in the neutral zone.

The No. 58 overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft by the Nashville Predators, Jack Ivankovic has a .923 SV% and 2.14 GAA.

Lukas Swedin, Bentley

A Freshman out of Stockholm, Sweden, Lukas boasts a .921 SV% and 2.02 GAA. He started 24 games for the Falcons with Bevilacqua taking the bulk of the rest.
