Meet 16-Year-Old Sensation Macklin Celebrini

Team Canada's star-studded roster hit the ice for the second day in a row, this time facing off against Switzerland in preliminary round play at Milan Cortina 2026.

Fans of both countries were hoping the luck was in their favor on Friday, Feb. 13, with puck drop set for 3:10 p.m. ET.

Canada started their journey for Olympic gold in the preliminary round with a comfortable 5-0 win over Czechia on Thursday. It didn't take long for 19-year old Macklin Celebrini (SJS) to show up on the scoresheet, tallying Canada's first goal in his Olympic debut. Connor McDavid led the way with 3 assists and doubled down against the Swiss.

Goaltender Jordan Binnington (STL) made 26 saves for the shutout leaving the way open for Logan Thompson to make his first Olympic start.

The Swiss opened Olympic play with a shutout of their own on Thursday, taking a dominant win over France 4-0. New Jersey Devils' Timo Meier contributed of those two goals with veteran goaltender Leonardo Genoni stopping 27.

Canadians Take 5-1 Win Over Swiss With 3 More Points For Connor McDavid

The second half of the game was all Canada as the Swiss failed to regain control of the game after going down by two goals. By the end of the game, all attention was on Kevin Fiala after he suffered an injury after a collision with Tom Wilson which required him to be stretchered off the ice.

Connor McDavid adds a goal and two assists to his already three assist Olympic performance thus far. Logan Thompson was great in the crease for Canada, stopping all but one of the Swiss' 25 shots on goal.

Penalties were even both ways, with a goal for each. Canada's firepower was just too volatile for the Swiss defense to keep stifled and away from Akira Schmid despite their best efforts.

Fiala Goes Down, Injured After Collision With Wilson - 2:50 3rd

Canada 5, Switzerland 1

Fiala threw out a reverse hit on Tom Wilson in Canada's end but it was Fiala who ended up down on the ice. Officials blew the whistle as he laid there clearly suffering in pain.

They brought out the stretcher to help him off the ice. Something you never want to see.

Chaos In The Crease, MacKinnon Scores - 6:57 3rd

Canada 5, Switzerland 1

It all started with Celebrini at the wall to make a light pass to McDavid, who drove the crease to try the five hole on Schmid. The goalie made the stop but the puck rebounded out to MacKinnon who earned the fifth goal for Canada today.

Canadian hockey fans are getting quite the show from this clinic of offensive firepower.

Celebrini To The Box, Swiss Power Play - 9:13 3rd

Canada 4, Switzerland 1

Celebrini was called for tripping on Moser near the boards in the Swiss end. Switzerland is 1 for 2 on the power play today.

Meier got three chances off of bouncy Thompson rebounds to open the advantage.

Andrighetto added two of his own from deep but Canada killed it off.

Crosby Scores! - 12:25 3rd

Canada 4, Switzerland 1

Right in the slot, Mitch Marner threw an aggressive shot-pass to the crease where Sidney Crosby was waiting to scoop the puck up and over Akira Schmid for Canada's fourth goal.

Just what the doctor ordered.

It's Crosby's sixth Olympic goal in 14 games.

Half the period remains for Switzerland to get back in this thing.

Physicality, Action Picks Up - 13:05 3rd

Canada 3, Switzerland 1

Although there are rules to discourage fighting in the Olympics, there's a lot of "legal" physicality taking place in front of the net between whistles. It's a great game as the Swiss tries to surge back into this game.

Andrighetto had a rocket that found the post.

Seth Jarvis Breaks Out, Schmid Makes The Save - 17:43 3rd

In his Olympic debut, Carolina Hurricanes' Seth Jarvis broke out with speed and put the first shot of the third on Akira Schmid after just three minutes played in the game so far.

He chose the five hole and Schmid was quick to react but almost got beaten.

Final twenty minutes, unless we get overtime, and a big comeback from the Swiss with a two-goal deficit to the Canadians' dream team.

Canada Extends Lead Over Swiss After Two Periods - End of 2nd

Canada 3, Switzerland 1

Canada just adds one early in the frame to extend their lead over the Swiss. It came from Celebrini and Canada eyes another three points as they head into the final twenty minutes against a very chippy Swiss team.

According to Frank Seravalli, Swiss fans were throwing cups of beer onto the ice and the Canadian bench was not too happy. There was a potential high sticking call missed when 

As the clock ticked down, Thurkauf and Cale Makar were wrestling behind the net in some sort of crazy tornado of trying to stand up.

Nino To The Box, Sanheim Gets The Oscar - 2:25 2nd

Canada 3, Switzerland 1

Nino was called for elbowing on Sanheim. Sanheim threw his head back dramatically after Nino went up high—uncertain on if there was actually any direct contact but Canada heads on the power play regardless.

Schmid stopped a Makar one-timer after Canada's top unit circled for the first half of the power play.

Celebrini found a post down in the corner.

Switzerland kills it off.

Wilson, Josi Meet Against The Boards - 4:48 2nd

Tom Wilson showed some composure, drawing some ire from Roman Josi after Josi had a hit for him into the boards.

Canada has won all eight face-offs in the second period.

In typical Meier fashion, he took another swat at Thompson after the whistle and Devon Toews took issue with it, sending him to the ice.

Stone Takes Stick High, But The Swiss Kill It Off - 11:56 2nd

Canada 3, Switzerland 1

Canada has a chance to break away from this very scrappy Swiss team. Michael Fora got his stick up high on Mark Stone in front of the net which sent him sprawling to the ice.

Macklin Celebrini Hits One-Timer From The Dot - 15:46 2nd

Canada 3, Switzerland 1

What a goal! Another incredible shot for the young guy as he earned his second Olympic goal on his first shot of the game. MacKinnon made a backwards pass to Celebrini as he looked like he was taking the puck behind the Swiss net.

Swiss On Power Play After Tripping, Canada Kills - 16:38 2nd

Theodore sent Nino Niederreiter to the ice on a dump and chase which sent Theodore to the box. Switzerland on their second power play of the game after scoring on the first.

Kurashev launched a hard one-timer that Thompson stopped low. Moments later, Kurashev took the puck deep and passed it back to Suter looking for his second. Canada forced it out after. 

Decent looking power play from the Swiss—two shots on goal.

Canada killed it off without letting one by.

Glauser is out after taking a big hit from McDavid in the first period. The Swiss lose part of their top D-pairing.

Canada Holds One Goal Lead Over Swiss After One - End of 1st

The Swiss defense has been keeping the Canadian offense from many dangerous chances at Schmid. They've also found a way to spend more time in Canada's end than the shots on goal might reveal.

After twenty, it's been all Connor McDavid with his first goal, an assist, and a physicality unlike what fans are used to seeing.

Swiss D Adjusts After Big McDavid Hit On Glauser - 4:33 1st

Switzerland started switching up their defensive pairings after Glauser took a huge hit from McDavid behind the net. He's been throwing his weight around a bit more than usual, that's for sure.

Timo Meier had one for McDavid and Sam Reinhart to return the favor.

Swiss Goal, Suter Scores On The Power Play! - 7:18 1st

Pius Suter created traffic out front of Thompson, getting past Toews and Makar to create a scoring chance for Switzerland. He tapped in the redirect delivery by Sven Andrighetto to bring the deficit back to just one.

Kukan also tallied an assist.

Horvat Called For High Sticking, Swiss On Power Play - 9:02 1st

Just seconds after the goal, Bo Horvat was called for a penalty and sent to the box to send Switzerland on the power play. They are 1-5 in the Olympics so far.

Harley Slings It Through Five Hole, Canada Goal! - 9:06 1st

Connor McDavid passed it to a wide open Thomas Harley flying into the left circle who slung the puck past Schmid for Canada's second goal of the afternoon.

A really nice touch from Tom Wilson to McDavid drew the Swiss defenders all to one side leaving Harley the room he needed to make the play.

Crosby Tries To Wait Out Schmid, But He Makes Stop - 13:20 1st

Canada 1, Switzerland 0

Akira Schmid was down and out on his stomach in the crease as Sidney Crosby dragged the puck past. Crosby held the puck as long as he could before launching a backhand shot at the net. 

Schmid threw up his best scorpion impression and made the stop with his boot.

Bennett Draws Tripping, Goal Canada! - 14:15 1st

In a battle for a puck in open ice, Bennett hit the ice when Kukan caught his feet with his stick. First power play for Canada of the day. 

Just 19 seconds off the face off, Connor McDavid tallied his first Olympic goal from the dot.

Nathan MacKinnon made a hard seam pass for the setup which McDavid took without pause.

Meier, Fiala, Hischier Force Issue - 16:04 1st

Canada 0, Switzerland 0

Canada was able to clear the puck eventually but it wasn't until the top line for the Swiss were able to set up in their zone and give Thompson a spook. Timo Meier missed the redirect attempt at the doorstep.

Nino Niederreiter Attacks Canada's Net - 18:10 1st

Happy Friday! Time to enjoy some best-on-best Olympic hockey.

The first action of the game came from a huge save by Logan Thompson on Nino Niederreiter driving the net with the puck.

This Swiss offense is lively early.

Logan Thompson will get his first start as Binner gets a rest. Akira Schmid of Vegas Golden Knights will take the crease on the other end.

Puck Drop Is Next: Canada vs Switzerland

Both teams have 3 points in Group A with no goals against, matching points with Czechia whose win today over France brought them in line.

Slovakia leads Group B with 6 points and all teams have two games played—upsetting Finland in their opener and then toppling Italy 3-2 earlier today.

Group C just has one game played each at the time of writing this, USA and Germany both at the top after their Thursday victories.
