Meet 16-Year-Old Sensation Macklin Celebrini

Team Canada opened their 2026 Winter Olympics tournament against Czechia in a Thursday afternoon puck drop at Milano Santogiuliua Arena.

Wednesday started what is likely the most anticipated hockey tournament ever—a true best-on-best display of the world's top hockey players that includes, for the first time in over a decade, the National Hockey League's elite talent.

19 players returned to Canada's roster from the 4 Nation's Face Off and just two have earned an Olympic gold: Sidney Crosby and Drew Doughty.

For Czechia, a roster featuring 11 current players from the NHL including Olympic flag-bearer David Pastrnak and veterans Ondrej Palat. The team looks to return to the Olympic podium after taking the bronze in 2006.

They last won gold in Nagano, 1998.

Canada Opens 2026 Olympics With 5-0 Victory Over Czechia

Canada will look towards Switzerland next on their list of preliminary round opponents at Milan Cortina 2026 after defeating Czechia 5-0 on Thursday, Feb. 12.

Jordan Binnington added a 26 save shutout in his first start for Team Canada at the Olympics. 19-year old Macklin Celebrini (SJS) opened the scoring and the NHL's top talent was showing off with Connor McDavid, Sidney Crosby, and Nathan MacKinnon combining for six points.

Dostal stopped 31 shots but the Czech offense couldn't push back enough to keep them in the game. They move on to play France on Friday.

Suzuki Redirects Puck Over Dostal - 6:38 3rd

Canada 5 - 0 Czechia

In a very clever move, Nick Suzuki was on the doorstep where he flipped the puck up and over Dostal in a pass redirect from McDavid. The goal marked Canada's fifth and adds another assist for McDavid—his third of the game.

Canada's in complete control of things as Czechia has struggled to add more than one shot on net since the start of the period.

Shots on goal:

  • CZE: 26
  • CAN: 34

Wes McCauley Taken Out, Recovers Like A Pro - 8:17 3rd

Canada 4 - 0 Czechia

Longtime NHL referee Wes McCauley took a tumble along the boards after the puck went by and players followed—he swiftly recovered to his feet which the broadcast made sure to appreciate with a full replay.

McDavid Sets Up MacKinnon For 4th Goal - 12:18 3rd

Canada 4 - 0 Czechia

Canada stretched the lead to four after just 13 seconds on the power play. Crosby and McDavid passed it back on Dostal's left before launching it across to MacKinnon for the tap-in.

Crosby to McDavid to MacKinnon... what a treat.

Here's the clip for Canadian viewers.

Kubalik To The Box For Interference, Canada PP - 12:31 3rd

Canada 3 - 0 Czechia

Celebrini was interfered with near the bench by Dominik Kubalik to send Canada on their second power play of the game—the first since the opening frame of the matchup.

Jordan Binnington Taking Focal Point - 17:36 3rd

Canada 3 - 0 Czechia

As he adds another few saves on Czechia's top line, it's hard not to talk about Jordan Binnington's performance thus far. He's made 24 saves after 45 minutes of play.

His somewhat controversial selection to start due to a lackluster performance this season with the St. Louis Blues is getting quieted down quickly.

Shots on goal:

  • CZE: 25
  • CAN: 26

Third Period Has Begun - 17:36 3rd

Canada 3 - 0 Czechia

If Czechia is going to close this gap, they'll have to start chipping away at it now as we head into the final twenty minutes of this opening game. Simek leads in shots at 4, McDavid at 5.

Czech fans would like to see Hronek, Hertl, or Kempny be able to convert after all of their time on the ice, over 13 minutes each.

Josh Morrissey did not return to the bench after the intermission.

Canada Pins Czechia Down To End 2nd

Canada 3 - 0 Czechia

Team Canada has found their footing and a comfortable lead after forty minutes against a really good Czech team and goalie in Lukas Dostal.

Horvat's goal tilted the ice and it was tough for Czechia's defense to get the puck cleared. McDavid, Celebrini, and Suzuki were all over the ice with time and space, trying to find an angle.

Although shots remain close, Canada's pace has picked up and the passed their opponents as the frame came to a close. Third period is next.

Shots on goal:

  • CZE: 22
  • CAN: 23

Dostal Makes Huge Back-to-Back Saves On McDavid - 11:50 2nd

Canada 2 - 0 Czechia

Shots on goal:

  • CZE: 17
  • CAN: 18

Marner Makes Leaping Sauce To Stone For Second Goal - 13:13 2nd

Canada 2 - 0 Czechia

What an incredible play!

Crosby was on the boards for the zone entry, who set up Marner as he rushed towards the net and Stone converged from the other side.

A Czech defender tried to slide down the middle for the stop but Marner sauced the pass perfectly over his legs to Stone who swatted it into the net. Marner immediately after making the pass, leapt over the defender.

Top Line For Czechia Almost Ties It Up - 16:22 2nd

Canada 1 - 0 Czechia

Binnington had to make two good stops as Necas, Hertl and Pastrnak try to circle the waters and bring things back to even. This top line for the Czech looks more and more dangerous as time goes on.

2nd Period Live! - 19:08 2nd

Canada 1 - 0 Czechia

After a short break, Canada and Czechia are back on Olympic ice in Italy.

End of 1st: Canada Leads Czechia 1-0

It's the 19-year old that gets the honors of lighting the first lamp for Team Canada in their journey towards a potential Olympic gold medal in 2026.

Although the puck only hit the back of the net twice, one of which was called back, offensive firepower has been a focal point already in the preliminary round.

Binnington was called on early to make big saves and was there when he needed to be.

Czechia's top line in particular had no trouble forcing Canada to defend their own zone, and with Dostal showing confidence between the pipes—they have something going here.

Martin Necas (7:36) leads TOI for Czechia.

Connor McDavid (7:00) leads TOI for Canada.

Shots on goal:

  • CAN: 11

Celebrini Redirects Goal In Final Moments of 1st - 0:05 1st

Canada 1 - 0 Czechia

In a display of great clock management and pure skill by the Canadians, the youngest player on the roster Macklin Celebrini redirected the puck into the net with just 5 seconds left in the opening frame.

Cale Makar launched the delivery towards Dostal before Celebrini knocked the puck down just below the crossbar and into the net.

Kampf Misses Wide Open Chance, Binnington Holds - 1:53 1st

Canada 0 - 0 Czechia

David Kampf had a wide open net after a rebound while Binnington was sprawled out in the crease. He whiffed on the puck, though, and by the time he was able to get a second swing at it, Binnington was ready to glove it down.

Czechia passed Canada in shots on goal.

  • CZE: 11
  • CAN: 10

Shots Differential Tightens As Energy Grows - 4:49 1st

Canada 0 - 0 Czechia

After a bit of a mid-period lull due to icing and commercial breaks, energy waned slightly until just over six minutes remained.

Marchand had two back to back chances on the doorstep that Dostal was able to stop before Necas broke out the other way with speed for a five-hole attempt with barely enough space.

Celebrini and Kempny got into a bit by the boards after an offsides whistle.

Shots on goal:

  • CZE: 8
  • CAN: 10

Makar blocked the first shot with his arm and headed to the bench in some pain.

Czechia Kills The Penalty, Dostal Stands Strong - 15:30 1st

Canada 0 - 0 Czechia

  • CAN: 6
