As a massive winter weather storm sweeps across the Southern and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States, two teams will be meeting in the icy cold tundra of Hastings, Minnesota for the 2026 AHL Outdoor Classic that might bust the record books open like a spontaneously exploding tree.

Minnesota Wild American Hockey League affiliate Iowa Wild will host the Nashville Predators affiliate Milwaukee Admirals with the puck drop set for 5:30 p.m. ET.

The National Weather Service has announced a cold weather advisory is in effect in the area warning of air temperatures as cold as 25 to 30 below zero expected overnight.

It's all going down on Friday, January 23 at the United Heroes League Complex.

At puck drop, it's forecasted to be a bitterly cold 11 degrees below zero on Friday night.

Only two other games in history come close to these frigid temperatures—the 2022 NHL Winter Classic that was also in Minnesota is called the coldest game in NHL history with a game temperature of 5.7 degrees below zero.

The St. Louis Blues won that game against the Minnesota Wild, 6-4, with Jordan Kyrou putting up 2 goals and 2 assists for the winning squad.

Another frozen classic from the history books is the first ever outdoor NHL regular season game, the 2003 Heritage Classic. Played between Edmonton Oilers and Montreal Canadians in Edmonton at Commonwealth Stadium, nearly 60,000 fans withstood the reported -22 degree wind chill to watch the Canadiens take the win.

Where Is The Iowa Wild Outdoor Classic?

The Iowa Wild Outdoor Classic will be played at the United Heroes League arena in Hastings, Minnesota. The permanent outdoor rink is the host site for Hockey Day Minnesota 2026 and the AHL game between the Iowa Wild and Milwaukee Admirals will be the first professional game to be included in the event's 20-year history.

Hastings is about 30 minutes southeast of the Twin Cities.
