Canada and Czechia met in one of the most anticipated elimination match-ups of the 2026 World Juniors.

Canada had a chance to overcome Czechia, the team that ended their last two World Juniors chances early in the quarterfinal round—but they did not overcome the rival.

In 2026's rematch, only one emerged victorious in the semifinal round game on Sunday, Jan. 4 at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, MN.

Czechia will play Sweden, who defeated Finland in round seven of a shootout after a thrilling three periods and overtime to earn their spot in the gold medal game.

Czechia and Canada faced off last week in the preliminary round in which Canada took the win after a tense, high-scoring game on Boxing Day, 7-5.

Cihar Hits Empty Net - 0:25 3rd

Canada 4, Czechia 6

Cihar broke out with full speed to chase down the puck and get the empty net and seal the deal for Czechia to send them to the Gold medal game.

During Czechia's celebration, McKenna was handed a misconduct call and a minor penalty for his behavior towards the refs.

Reschny Goes To Box For Interference, Czechia PP - 0:53 3rd

Canada 4, Czechia 5

The crowd and Canada's bench erupted when Cole Reschny charged into Orsulak and was given goaltender interference to send Czechia on the man advantage for the rest of the game.

Czechs Retake Lead, Curran Attacking Front - 1:14 3rd

Canada 4, Czechia 5

Curran and Poletin were attacking the net with four Canadian defenders surrounding them but they were still able to deflect the puck in past Ivankovic. The play is under review for kicking. The puck did go in off of Poletin's skate but it did not appear to be a kicking motion.

Martone Ties The Game - 2:41 3rd

Canada 4, Czechia 4

With three minutes remaining and both teams back to 5-on-5, Porter Martone cleaned up a bouncing rebound off to beat Mrtka and get the puck past Orsulak.

Penalties Flying, Czechia 4-on-3- 5:13 3rd

Canada 3, Czechia 4

Ivankovic was stalwart to open Czechia's power play and Canada was bailed out within seconds when Czechia was called for too many men on the ice.

During the next faceoff, Michael Misa used his hand to play the puck on the ice and was handed a minor penalty for delay of game.

Parekh returned to the bench during the chaos.

McKenna Into The Box, Czechia Power Play - 6:05 3rd

Canada 3, Czechia 4

McKenna cross checked Galvas in the face right in front of the ref to draw a penalty and send Czechia on the power play. Refs discussed shortly and the play was under review for a major penalty. After the review, it was just a two minute minor.

Parekh Heads Down Tunnel After Big Hit - 6:54 3rd

Canada 3, Czechia 4

Nestrasil and Parekh collided in the neutral zone which left Canada without one of their best dmen.

Cihar Lifts It For The Lead - 10:11 3rd

Canada 3, Czechia 4

Cihar drove in towards the net on Desnoyers with barely any room to lift the puck bar-down beautifully above Ivankovic's glove side.

Canada's weak spot continues to be turnovers.

Canada Pours Pressure On, Czechia Responds - 12:24 3rd

Canada 3, Czechia 3

Team Canada was able to thread together a few good shifts after a short push by Czechia followed the Reschny tying goal.

Shots on goal now match at 22 a piece total.

Cole Reschny Ties It Up - 16:01 3rd

Canada 3, Czechia 3

Czechia has had the best chances to open the third period, adding two shots on goal while Canada's added zero until Cole Reschny went down to the goal line and rotated into the front of the net and swept the puck under Orsulak's pad.

Final Period Of Regulation Started - 20:00 3rd

Canada 2, Czechia 3

Buckle up.

End of 2nd: Wild Period Comes To A Close

Canada 2, Czechia 3

Canada still doesn't look completely comfortable in 5-on-5 play as they try to topple a very resilient Czech team. Orsulak seemed to be in just the right place at the right time no matter what.

Canada did swing back in a big way in the shots on goal category with 12, while Czechia only had 8 of their own.

From the physicality picking up to players trying to draw penalties left and right, the game hit a chaotic pace when Canada was awarded not only power plays but also penalty shots and still came out relatively empty handed—just one goal more.

Total shots on goal:

  • CAN: 18
  • CZE: 19

Czechia Back On Top, Benak Nails It - 0:42 2nd

Canada 2, Czechia 3

Curran took the puck in on the rush from an Ethan MacKenzie turnover. Adam Benak was waiting for the seam pass under the faceoff circle to lean into the one-timer and lift the puck above and past Ivankovic.

Michael Hage Gets Penalty Shot x2 - 1:56 2nd

Canada 2, Czechia 2

Michael Hage was awarded a penalty shot after being penalized on a breakaway near the end of the second period. Max Psenicka was guilty of the offense.

— TSN (@TSN_Sports) January 5, 2026

On his first attempt, he got tripped by Orsulak and was awarded a reshot. He did the same exact move and the Czech goaltender was on top of it to make the stop.

Parekh Sneaks It Through, Tied At Two - 7:22 2nd

Canada 2, Czechia 2

It was only a matter of time after Canada had the two-man advantage. Orsulak was flying all over the place trying to keep up with the Canadian power play.

Eventually, it was a shot from Parekh that hit Cole Reschny's legs and bounced past Orsulak and into the net to tie things up in the middle frame.

Canada had the power play for another 90 seconds but Czechia killed it off.

Canada Gets 5-On-3 After Poletin Sends It Out - 8:15 2nd

Canada 1, Czechia 2

It seemed impossible that the puck didn't find the back of the net but a Parekh shot hit the post before Poletin sent the puck flying out of play.

Orsulak made a few very important stops but none nearly as important as the stops made by the post.

Sikora Goes Completely Limp On Ivankovic, Canada PP - 8:26 2nd

Canada 1, Czechia 2

Sikora had a breakaway chance with three Canadian defenders around him. Desnoyers and Parekh gave him a shove and he completely flopped into the goaltender which led to a continuation of the chaos.

Refs sent Sikora to the box.

Both Teams Flopping All Over The Place - 10:19 2nd

Canada 1, Czechia 2

Poletin went down trying to draw a high sticking penalty and Parekh did his own performance job within seconds, hitting the ice after a soft touch by the Czech defender. No penalties called.

Martone Aggressively Taken Down By Galvas - 11:00 2nd

Canada 1, Czechia 2

Orsulak snow-angeled over a loose puck but the refs didn't deem it necessary to blow the whistle. Iginla and Martone went in to poke at the puck which drew the ire of Galvas and Cihar.

Galvas grabbed Martone from behind and drove him to the ground with his elbow into the head. No penalties were given.

Hits Start Flying Again - 13:47 2nd

Canada 1, Czechia 2

Carels had a big hammering for Benak near the Czechia bench and Verhoeff took one from Poletin to kick off a few minutes of high-speed hits with not a lot of shooting opportunities.

Titlbach Gives The Czechs The Lead - 16:16 2nd

Canada 1, Czechia 2

Ivankovic lost his stick before the puck made its way up high and then into Adam Titlbach's control in the slot.

He slung it high past Ivankovic for his first 2026 WJC point and to force Canada to trail for only their second time of the tournament.

Shots on goal are:

  • CAN: 6
  • CZE: 12

Brady Martin Off Bench, Lines Changing - 16:48 2nd

Canada 1, Czechia 1

Cootes bumped up to McKenna and Hage's line with Brady Martin out after suffering an upper body injury during a hit in the first period. Lines are shifting around as the Canadian bench tries to figure things out.

The 2nd Period Is Live - 19:34 2nd

Canada 1, Czechia 1

And we're off to the middle twenty minutes of this duel.

End of 1st: Canada vs Czechia Even After One

Canada 1, Czechia 1

Heading into the first intermission of this 2026 World Juniors semifinal grudge match between Canada and Czechia, the momentum still hangs in the balance.

After a handful of minutes of broken passes, turnovers and icing, Czechia was the first to establish their offense for a consistent push near the middle of the period.

It wasn't until the last five minutes of the period that Canada would seize control for the first time thanks to the top power play unit in the WJC.

Czechia didn't let Canadian fans get too comfortable, though, scoring their own within two minutes.

Second period is up next and Czechia will be on the power play for 17 seconds.

Here's what FloHockey's Chris Peters had to say about the first.

Luchanko Collides With Orsulak, Czech Power Play - 1:43 1st

Canada 1, Czechia 1

Jett Luchanko was angry as he headed to the penalty box after being called for cross-checking the goaltender.

He was given a shove into the crease after stopping in front of the net but stuck his arms out into Orsulak which drew the refs attention.

Czechs Strike Back, Curran On Doorstep - 3:04 1st

Canada 1, Czechia 1

It looked like Canada was going to take control of the period until Czechia broke Canada's defense with a rush and Max Curran found himself wide open.

He slid the puck under the pad of Ivankovic to score his first goal of the tournament and bring things even.

Iginla Opens Scoring With Power Play Goal - 4:46 1st

Canada 1, Czechia 0

Poletin is going to want that penalty back after watching Tij Iginla, Jett Luchanko, and Michael Misa work together in front of the crease to net Canada's first goal of the game.

Iginla buried the puck on the Misa pass from Parekh's initial delivery. Iginla has goals in three straight games.

Chaos In The Crease After Hage Attempt - 5:35 1st

Canada 0, Czechia 0

Michael Hage drove the net for a backhand attempt that forced Orsulak to stretch out. The puck was loose for an extended amount of time which led to pushing and shoving as the refs blew the whistle.

Poletin Bowls Over Ivankovic, Canada On The Power Play - 6:28 1st

Canada 0, Czechia 0

Poletin skates right into the crease and into Ivankovic to send Canada on their first power play of the game.

Czech's Top Line Pressures Canada's D - 8:15 1st

Canada 0, Czechia 0

Galvas, Cihar and Sikora were able to get setup in the o-zone heading into the halfway point of the first period.

Cihar's and Fibigr's shots went wide but Canada was unable to clear the puck for nearly two minutes.

Czechia has been doing a better job using their bodies to lay down some early hits.

Space Is Limited, Both Teams Getting Settled In - 12 1st

Canada 0, Czechia 0

Real estate on the ice is at a premium between these two teams as they try to get settled into this semifinal game.

The pace of Czechia's forecheck is not allowing Canada to get a clean entry.

Shots on goal:

  • CAN: 2
  • CZE: 3

Poletin Takes Early Shot, Goes Face To Face With Ivankovic - 19:00 1st

Canada 0, Czechia 0

Tomas Poletin took Czechia's first shot on goal, skating straight up to Ivankovic and getting in his face immediately after, as the whistle was called.

Poletin has 3 goals and 1 assist.

Orsulak vs Ivankovic In Net - 19:45 1st

Canada 0, Czechia 0

For Czechia, undrafted Michal Orsulak will start between the pipes while Ivankovic (NSH) will take his spot in the crease.

Ivankovic has a 95.92 SVS%

Orsulak has an 86.96 SVS%

2026 NHL Draft Prospects To Watch At World Juniors

Gavin McKenna, Ivar Stenberg and more: Chris Peters shared his top draft prospects to watch at the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship. Read the full write-up here.

A few players he listed from tonight's game:

  • Gavin McKenna, LW, Canada
  • Keaton Verhoeff, RHD, Canada
  • Carson Carels, LHD, Canada
  • Adam Novotný, LW, Czechia
  • Vladimír Dravecký, RHD, Czechia

Here's what he had to say about Verhoeff:

"Verhoeff may end up as Canada’s eighth defenseman, which isn’t a huge slight considering Canada has a very veteran and experienced group on its right side. Meanhwile, Verhoeff is going to be among the younger players to patrol a blue line if he gets into game action. I’m not sure the WJC will have an outsized impact on his draft stock due to what we expect is a more limited role. Canada did not yet register the 17-year-old North Dakota freshman on its roster ahead of its opening game."
