Weekend Viewing Guide: AHL On FloHockey

A Saturday matinee is up next for AHLTV on FloHockey Game of the Week. Plus the Grand Rapids Griffins continue with their record-breaking start to the season and Belleville Senators interim head coach Andrew Campbell makes his debut as busy weekend leads the AHL into its holiday break next week.

Here is everything that you can see this weekend around the AHL on FloHockey.

Friday

Grand Rapids Griffins at Iowa Wild (7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT; FloHockey)
How far can the Griffins take this start? Down 2-0 at Iowa midway through Wednesday night’s game, they scored five unanswered goals to pull off one of their more dramatic victories this season. Their 23-1-1-0 start is the best 25-game open to a season in the AHL’s 90 seasons. Detroit Red Wings first-round pick Sebastian Cossa’s 13 wins lead the AHL, and he also ranks second overall in goal-against average (1.65) and save percentage (.937) going into the weekend. Another first-rounder, forward Michael Brandsegg-Nygård, had two assists in Wednesday’s win and is up to 5-11-16 through 20 games for the Griffins. Grand Rapids will put a 12-game winning streak on the line as well.

Iowa, last in the AHL at 7-19-0-1, has started to show some reason for hope. The Wild went to Winnipeg last weekend and got a split, shutting out the Moose last Sunday afternoon, 6-0. They then signed forwards Jean-Luc Foudy and Dylan Gambrell to AHL contracts. Defenseman Lukas Sillinger, a Hobey Baker Award nominee with Arizona State in 2023-24, also signed a professional tryout deal with Iowa this week. They should be dress a solid line-up after the Minnesota Wild sent them defensemen Carson Lambos and David Špaček along with forwards Nicolas Aubé-Kubel and Ben Jones.

Saturday -- AHLTV on FloHockey Game of the Week

Tucson Roadrunners at Abbotsford Canucks (5 pm ET/2 pm PT; FloHockey)
The defending Calder Cup champion Canucks already find themselves in a fight for their season following a 3-13-1-2 start. However, they have started to rebound lately, going 3-2-1-1 since then. They have also started to get roster help. Feisty defenseman Jett Woo is back after missing the first two months of the season. This week Abbotsford also received forwards Arshdeep Bains and Lukas Reichel on loan from the Vancouver Canucks. The constant shuffling of goaltenders Jiří Patera and Nikita Tolopilo to and from Vancouver has also stopped. Abbotsford has a lot of work to do to get back into the Pacific Division playoff mix, but they also have time.

The Roadrunners bring their own young talent, starting with blueliner Dmitri Simashev. He went to the then-Arizona Coyotes as the sixth overall pick of the 2023 NHL Draft and is with Tucson after opening the season with the Utah Mammoth. He had a 1-3-4 across a pair of games against the Bakersfield Condors last weekend. Another top prospect on the blueline, Maveric Lamoureux, is back with the Roadrunners following a brief recall to Utah.

The teams meet Friday night after splitting a pair of games in Tucson three weeks ago.

Sunday

Toronto Marlies at Belleville Senators (3 pm; FloHockey)
Coming off a coaching change this week, this will be a hectic weekend for the B-Sens. Andrew Campbell is taking over as interim head coach after the Ottawa Senators dismissed head coach David Bell on Wednesday. The team has games at Rochester on Friday and Toronto on Saturday afternoon before heading home to complete their 3-in-3 weekend. That coaching change came after Belleville had managed just one win in nine games (1-7-1-0).

With goaltender Artur Akhtyamov on recall to the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Marlies have been relying on Vyacheslav Peksa lately. Akhtyamov is back, however. The Marlies have seen plenty of Belleville already this season. They are 2-2-0-1 against the B-Sens so far; both of those wins have come on Belleville ice. The teams also meet in Toronto again on Boxing Day.
