Rocket Arena is the home of both the Monsters and the Cleveland Cavaliers and has also been the site for a number of high-profile events including the 2022 NBA All-Star Game, the 2024 NCAA Women's Final Four and mere weeks ago hosted the USA-Canada Rivalry Series featuring Olympic hopefuls for both the U.S. and Canadian women's national hockey teams.
“Cleveland stands as a pillar among historic American Hockey League cities, and the Monsters organization is one of our most successful franchises today,” said AHL President and CEO Scott Howson. “We are excited to be bringing our showcase event to Rocket Arena and the city of Cleveland in 2027.”
The AHL is currently celebrating its 90th anniversary and Cleveland has had a large presence within that history. In fact, Cleveland hosted the first ever AHL All-Star Classic in 1942. They also hosted in 1954 and 1957, but have not hosted the event in its modern era, which began in 1995.
The city of Cleveland has a deep hockey history dating back to 1929. The city was first introduced to the AHL in 1936. The Cleveland Barons were active in the league until 1973 and the organization had claimed nine Calder Cup titles over that span. There was a two-year span during which Cleveland had an NHL team, also the Cleveland Barons. Another iteration of the Barons returned to the AHL from 2001-06.
The Monsters have been part of the AHL since 2007 when they were then known as the Lake Erie Monsters and had just moved from Denver. The team rebranded to Cleveland Monsters in 2016. The club has one Calder Cup title, won in 2015-16, and has sent numerous players to the NHL over the years as an affiliate first of the Colorado Avalanche and now the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The AHL All-Star Skills Competition will be held on Feb. 7, while the AHL All-Star Challenge will run on Feb. 8.
The 2026 AHL All-Star Classic is slated for February and will be hosted by the Rockford IceHogs.
