AHA Women's Notes: Penn State And Mercyhurst To Clash As Ranked Foes
Penn State and Mercyhurst have enjoyed plenty of battles in recent years and they'll do so again this weekend, this time as ranked foes

The second weekend of conference play is here and all eyes are on Pegula Ice Arena, as No. 6 Penn State hosts No. 15 Mercyhurst in a highly-anticipated battle. Syracuse heads to Delaware in another AHA matchup, while RIT hosts No. 14 St. Lawrence, and Robert Morris faces Yale in non-conference action.

Here’s what fans can watch for this weekend in AHA women’s hockey.
In-State Ranked Foes
Their rinks are separated by just 210 miles, and the Pennsylvania rivals are relatively close in the rankings too. Penn State came in at No. 6 in this week’s USCHO poll, while Mercyhurst followed at No. 15.
The Nittany Lions are coming off a sweep at Delaware and already sit atop the AHA standings – a spot they’ve held for much of the past three seasons. Penn State earned a 5-0 win in Game 1 and completed the sweep last Saturday with a 7-0 victory. Freshman defenseman Danica Maynard had four points in the series and leads Penn State with nine (2-7-9) on the season, which ranks fifth nationally.
The Lakers are 3-3-0 to start this season but have shut out their opponent in two of their past three games. Two of their three losses came at No. 5 Minnesota Duluth as well, one of which went to overtime. Mercyhurst was the only AHA team to hand Penn State a conference loss last season and the teams have met in three straight AHA Championship Games.
Lock-Down Nittany Lions
Penn State remains undefeated on the season (6-0-0) and its defensive play is a big reason why. While the Nittany Lions have lit the lamp 28 times through their first six games, they’ve also been tremendous in their own end.
Penn State is allowing the nation’s fewest shots per game (12.2) and has allowed just six goals, which ranks third. Only Northeastern (4) and Wisconsin (5) have allowed less. Penn State senior Katie DeSa has stopped 66 of the 72 shots she’s seen and is one of just five NCAA goaltenders with multiple shutouts (2).
