Delaware Hosts No. 6 Penn State In First Conference Game: AHA Women's Notes

Conference play is here as a pair of Atlantic Hockey America matchups decorate the NCAA’s women’s hockey schedule this weekend.

After earning the program’s first-ever win over Holy Cross last Sunday, Delaware hosts reigning AHA champion Penn State for a pair of games in Newark, while RIT travels to Robert Morris.

Here’s a look at both series and what fans can watch for in AHA women’s hockey.

New Kids, Nittany Lions Set To Clash

The list of firsts continues for Delaware, as the Blue Hens will play their first conference games this weekend against No. 6 Penn State. It’s quite the test out of the gate, as the first-year program hosts one of the nation’s top programs. Penn State has followed up its historic 2024-25 season with a perfect 4-0 start, and they’ve out-scored their opponents 16-6 through four games.

Delaware earned a 2-1 win over Holy Cross last Sunday behind Charlotte Payne’s 49 saves and goals from Meera Smith and Katelynn Charlton. A win this weekend would send quite the welcome message to its fellow AHA foes, as Penn State suffered just one conference loss last winter.

To add further intrigue to the series, Delaware head coach Allison Coomey spent six seasons coaching at Penn State, including three as associate head coach. Both games will be available here on Flo beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday. Both times EDT.

Robert Morris holds a 31-15-4 edge in the all-time series against RIT and is 17-7-2 on home ice in that stretch. The Colonials are off to a 2-0-0 start on home ice this season too, as they earned a season-opening sweep over Assumption.

RIT was tabbed third in the AHA’s Preseason Coaches Poll while Robert Morris came in at No. 5. RMU is led offensively by sophomore forward Jessica MacKinnon, who has five points (1-4-5) and an AHA-leading 61 faceoff wins. MacKinnon's 61 wins rank third in the country.

Women’s Notes

  • Syracuse hosts No. 7 Quinnipiac this weekend at Tennity Ice Pavilion, while Lindenwood also hosts Merrimack. Both Syracuse games will be available on Flo.
  • The AHA announced its latest Players of the Week on Tuesday. Syracuse forward Peyton Armstrong, Penn State defenseman Leah Stecker, Mercyhurst goaltender Magdalena Luggin and Delaware rookie Katelynn Charlton took home the respective honors.
  • Mercyhurst forward Julia Perjus leads the conference with five goals. No other AHA player has more than three. Perjus is also tied for the AHA point lead with six.
  • Three AHA goaltenders have already recorded a shutout this season – Katie DeSa (Penn State), Sophia Bellina (RIT) and Luggin.
