The American Hockey League (AHL) is finally here once again. Fans can finally turn on FloHockey to watch some of the top NHL prospects develop their skills amongst some of the most elite professional hockey players in the world.

Staring down a 72-game journey, it all began on Friday with more than 29 games over the opening weekend, October 10-12. 

Every single game along the way to the 2026 Calder Cup Playoffs will be broadcasted live and on-demand on FloHockey.

The Toronto Marlies went on the road to take on the Rochester Americans as they kicked off their 70th anniversary season. On the call was legend Don Stevens as he began his final season.

Rochester Americans Hold On, Score 4-3 Against Marlies In AHL Home Opener

After a furious attack by the Toronto Marlies in the final minutes, the Rochester Americans were able to hold off for the win in their home opener. The youngest team in the AHL showed offense, defense, and fantastic goaltending to take their first win of the season in front of a fantastic home audience.

With less than two and a half minutes remaining, Akhtyamov left the net to add a skater to the Marlies and add even more pressure to Levi.

Amerks Kill Penalty With Ease - 3:34, 3rd

Toronto Marlies 3, Rochester Americans 4 - 3rd

Mrtka retook the ice after the Amerks put up a stalwart effort to stop the Marlies from utilizing their 5-on-4 advantage. Toronto failed to enter the zone and added no shots on goal.

Marlies Go On Power Play Again - 5:35, 3rd

Toronto Marlies 3, Rochester Americans 4 - 3rd

Toronto looked to be gaining some control, with an oppressive offense in the Amerks zone for more than a minute by Sim, Pare, and Pezzetta.

Radim Mrtka was called for cross-checking to give the Marlies the man advantage.

Back to Full Strength, Things Even Out - 8:40, 3rd

The momentum hangs in the balance as the game recovers back to 5-on-5 and just 8 minutes remain. Neither team had a dangerous chance in minutes as the tension picks up into the final moments of the AHL opening night game.

Physicality Picks Up And Chaos Ensues, 4-on-4 - 10:51, 3rd

Toronto Marlies 3, Rochester Americans 4 - 3rd

Fiddler-Schultz and Pare are called for roughing penalties on another scrum after a Rochester offensive push to make it 4-on-4 midway through the third.

After Webber gave Levi a face full of snow, the Rochester Americans got into his face and let him know they did not appreciate the favor.

Benning And Warren Come Together After Big Hit, Amerks Power Play - 12:54, 3rd

Toronto Marlies 3, Rochester Americans 4 - 3rd

A scuffle broke out after Benning delivered a hit on Kopff that required the medical team to check on him which drew a stoppage midway through the third.

Rochester was given the advantage with an additional boarding call going to Benning, aside from the matching roughing calls.

Marlies Goal! Valis Jams It In Past Levi - 14:21, 3rd

Toronto Marlies 3, Rochester Americans 4 - 3rd

Marlies brought it within one goal on an aggressive push towards Levi with the entire line pressuring the front of the net. Borya Valis added his second of the game at point blank range.

Clock Is Running On Final Period - 17:30, 3rd

Toronto Marlies 2, Rochester Americans 4 - 3rd

Period number three begins and these two teams are off to secure their first win of the season. The home team's two-goal advantage has no doubt left them in control of the game but the surging Toronto Marlies are trying to energize their way back into the game through heavy contact and hard work. 

The Amerks speed, malleability, and youth has no doubt been an advantage in this environment.

Just when the Marlies were getting some life, Brendan Warren added his first goal of the season on the breakaway.

Marlies Score After Threatening Pressure - 9:04, 2nd

After a chaotic few minutes as Toronto tried to claw back control of the game, they put together some offensive chances and it all culminated in a shot by Borya Valis to put their first point on the board and his first AHL goal.

Amerks take advantage on a defensive change and Tyler Kopff entered the zone to whistle a wrister under the glove of Akhtyamov and score his first professional goal.

Amerks Kill Penalty - 16:20, 2nd

Despite the Marlies putting on full pressure and getting many chances at Levi, they were unable to put the puck in the net and the Amerks earned their first kill of the season.

Scrum Breaks Out After Smith Hits Mrtka, Marlies Power Play - 18:37, 2nd

Penalties were handed out aplenty after a massive windup and hit by Blake Smith on Radim Mrtka drew out the fisticuffs. After everything, Marlies go on the power play for the first time this season.

Novikov, Joshua and Smith were handed roughing penalties.

The Amerks are on their fourth power play of the game as hooking is called on Haymes. Just seven seconds into the power play, Rosen scores his second power play goal right off the faceoff. A beautiful tic-tac-toe passing play set him up for a wide open net. Ostlund and Jones on the assist once again.

And we're off! Radim Mrtka takes ones of his first shot on goal of the season but Akhtyamov makes the save.

Isak Rosen scored the first goal of the season for the Rochester Americans high glove side over the shoulder of Artur Akhtyamov on the power play.

Fight Breaks Out After Trevor Kuntar Hits Henry Thrun - 2:06, 1st

As the puck goes flying down the boards behind the Marlies net, Trevor Kuntar hit Thrun as he collected the puck. Logan Shaw immediately followed it up, backing up his teammate and fighting Kuntar. They were quickly separated, however.

Rochester goes on the power play.

Noah Ostlund had a beautiful wrist shot quickly off the initial face-off but Akhytyamov was able to squeeze it in his arm to make the save.

Marlies Pour On Pressure - 5:30, 1st

Jacob Quillan, Matthew Barbolini, and David Kampf add shots on Devon Levi as the Marlies rebound from being down a man for most of the first period so far. Levi stands strong and made both stops without much trouble.

Marlies Kill Both Power Plays - 8:20, 1st

Toronto Marlies 0, Rochester Americans 0 - 1st

After nearly four minutes straight of power plays by the Rochester Americans, Akhtyamov and the Marlies penalty kill unit is 2 for 2 on the season so far.

Amerks Go On Back-to-Back Power Plays - 12:46, 1st

Toronto Marlies 0, Rochester Americans 0 - 1st

Rathbone was caught up high by Nylander, drawing the high-sticking call for the Amerks first power play of the season. They went 0-30 on the power play against Toronto last season.

After at least four shot attempts by the Amerks, Akhtyamov made a huge high glove save.

Just seconds after the first power play ran out, a slashing was drawn sending Matt Benning to the box to put the Amerks back on the power play.

Akhtyamov continued to look solid in the net with saves on Ostlund, Jones, and Helenius on the second power play.

Energy Picks Up After Nylander Wrap-Around Attempt - 13:24, 1st

After a wrap-around attempt trying to stuff it in Levi's short side by Alex Nylander, the Amerks weren't happy so the refs were forced to separate some of the players.

Levi put up his first great save of the season on an offensive zone entry by Groulx who drew four of the Amerks before passing out to Villeneuve who pushed the puck up to Luke Haymes and Lettieri on the doorstep.

Both Teams Getting Their Feet Under Them - 17:40, 1st

Toronto Marlies 0, Rochester Americans 0 - 1st

The first whistle comes after an icing on the Amerks before the Marlies followed up with their own icing just seconds later.

Offensive tries have remained at a minimum although Jake Leschyshyn put early pressure on Akhtyamov.

And We're Off: AHL Hockey Is Back! - 19:50, 1st

Toronto Marlies 0, Rochester Americans 0 - 1st

In this home opener for the Amerks, the youngest team takes on the oldest team in the AHL on this first night of the regular season.

After a short moment of silence to honor Amerks legend and Calder Cup champion Scott Metcalfe and the anthems, the puck is back on the ice and the regulation clock is ticking on AHL hockey.

Radim Mrtka, Tom Willander And 16 Rookies To Watch In The AHL This Season

"I thought we’d take a look at some of the fresh faces we are expecting to see around the league. Many rookies on the AHL teams will prove to be important assets for the NHL parent clubs down the road. Here’s a good look at players that will be spending a good chunk of their first season in the AHL.

Radim Mrtka, D, Rochester Americans (BUF): The Sabres have a multitude of options for how to handle Mrtka, who was selected ninth overall last June. He is still junior eligible and could be sent to the Seattle Thunderbirds in the WHL, where he finished out last season. But it seems as though the Sabres want to have him at least start in Rochester. Mrtka is a 6-foot-6 right-shot defenseman who had some limited pro experience in Czechia. We’ll have to wait and see if Mrtka sticks in Rochester, but he’s an exciting talent with a massive ceiling and would be fun to watch if he sticks in the AHL."

Taking A Team-By-Team Look At All 32 AHL Clubs

"As the AHL regular season gets underway tonight, management and coaching staffs across the league are still scurrying to sort out their rosters.

Waivers – and waiver claims – lead to some of that uncertainty. So do decisions prompted by salary-cap concerns on the NHL roster. Players in AHL training camps on professional tryout deals may have stuck on rosters. Or they didn’t, which means that there are holes that must be filled somehow. So expect AHL rosters to be ever-shifting, especially in the next several weeks, as players play themselves into or out of roster spots at both the NHL and AHL levels.

Let’s examine some of the storylines for each of the AHL’s 32 teams as they start the league’s 90th anniversary season:

Rochester Americans (Buffalo Sabres): The Sabres have established a pattern of sending top prospects to Rochester as 18- and 19-year-olds, and the strategy has largely worked. Defenseman Radim Mrtka, the ninth pick in this past June’s NHL Draft, is the latest player to attempt to handle the AHL. It’s a significant task for any 18-year-old, especially a defenseman, but the well-structured Amerks should have solid support around him. Can Devon Levi set himself up for an NHL promotion with his work in Rochester? The same goes for Isak Rosén."

Toronto Marlies (Toronto Maple Leafs): Long an organization that prizes extensive depth for its AHL roster, the Marlies once again are carrying a lengthy roster. Leafs management also went out and brought in high-end forwards Travis Boyd, Bo Groulx, Marc Johnstone (a former Marlie), and Vinni Lettieri. One challenge for head coach John Gruden will be how to keep everyone playing and involved."

The Toronto Marlies head to Blue Cross Arena as the Rochester Americans kick off their 70th anniversary season featuring guest appearances by Hall of Famers Randy Cunneyworth, Jody Gage, Jim Hofford, and Steve Langdon. 

The Amerks will also honor Hall of Famer Scott Metcalfe. Metcalfe was a first-round pick of the Edmonton Oilers and helped the Amerks to raise the Calder Cup more than three decades ago.

On the call will be the legendary voice of the Americans, Don Stevens, who is starting his final, 40th season with the team.

Friday, October 10: Abbotsford Canucks vs Henderson Silver Knights, 10:00 p.m. ET

The 2025 Calder Cup Champion Abbotsford Canucks fly to Vegas to retake the ice for their first game of the season against the Henderson Silver Knights. 

Their banner raising will have to wait until October 24, as they begin their season with four games on the road: two against the Silver Knights and two against Laval. The team on the ice will look quite a bit different with a few players making the move up to Vancouver, but coach Manny Malhotra remains at the helm.

Saturday, October 11: Syracuse Crunch vs Hershey Bears, 7:00 p.m. ET

The Hershey Bears kick off the season with a home game, facing the Syracuse Crunch on Saturday night at Giant Center.

Head Coach Derek King makes his debut with a new, young roster filled with rookies. King made the move after being assistant coach for the Chicago Blackhawks from 2022 to 2025.

Saturday, October 11: Grand Rapids Griffins vs Texas Stars, 8:00 p.m. ET

In a rematch of the 2025 Calder Cup Playoffs, the Grand Rapids Griffins hit the road to H-E-B Center at Cedar Park to take on the Texas Stars in the Lone Star State.

In their previous meeting, the Stars came away with the victory, sweeping the series 3-0. After the promotion of Neil Graham to the Dallas Stars, Toby Petersen now steers the ship. Petersen was most recently a skills coach for the Colorado Avalanche. Many veterans return on the ice for the Stars and Griffins, including young all-star goaltender Sebastian Cossa for the Red Wings affiliate.
