The Belleville name took over Ottawa’s AHL affiliation starting in the 2017-18 season, when the Ottawa Senators relocated their development club north from Binghamton, New York. 

The Binghamton era included a memorable high point when the club won the Calder Cup in 2011.

The decision to shift the franchise to Belleville was tied to upgrades to the CAA Arena (formerly Yardmen Arena), which required new refrigeration systems, expanded amenities, and capacity improvements to properly host an AHL team. 

That transformation allowed the Senators to bring their developmental pathway closer to home in Ontario, with more control over alignment among systems, coaching, and style.

Belleville’s role for Ottawa is vital: it’s where rising talents refine their professional game before being called up to the NHL. In early 2025, Ottawa recalled players such as Jan Jenik, Max Guenette, and Nikolas Matinpalo from Belleville to assist roster depth.
