Avalanche And Sharks Swap AHL Forwards In One-For-One Trade
Daniil Guschin is heading to the Colorado Avalanche, while Oskar Olausson will go to the San Jose Sharks in a trade of AHL forwards.

In a one-for-one swap, the San Jose Sharks and Colorado Avalanche each acquired players that have played primarily for their AHL clubs. The Sharks acquired 2021 first-round pick Oskar Olausson in exchange for 2020 third-rounder Daniil Guschin, who heads Colorado’s way.

Both forwards have struggled to find a long-term footing within their organizations. Olausson has appeared in just four NHL games over the last three seasons, while spending most of his time with the Colorado Eagles, appearing in 163 AHL contests and producing 66 points. Guschin, meanwhile, has seen 18 games of NHL action over the past three seasons while appearing in 182 AHL games where he scored 150 points over the last four seasons with the San Jose Barracuda.
OIausson remains under contract for next season, while Guschin was a restricted free agent and in need of a new contract after receiving a qualifying offer from the Sharks.
It may be a bit of a disappointing end for both players in their respective organizations as neither was able to take the next step to the NHL on a full-time basis.
Olausson has not lived up to the billing of his first-round status, posting a career-best 26 points last season in the AHL. A fresh start can help, but there’s still an uphill climb.
Guschin, meanwhile, has been a standout performer in the AHL with a career-best 28 goals last season. The Avalanche don’t exactly have an easy path for him to play NHL games next season, but at worst he is going to give the Eagles yet another weapon at their disposal.
Colorado is pretty well set at the NHL level, but they have lined their AHL team with solid veteran players and a few budding prospects up front with the additions of Alex Barré-Boulet and Gavin Brindley, especially of note. The Avs also re-signed AHL standout T.J. Tynan to a contract extension. This team should score an awful lot next season, especially with Guschin in the fold.
Both players have a chance at fresh starts and new opportunities, most of which appear likely to come at the AHL level next season.
