USA Hockey Survives Norway In IIHF World Championships 2025

As the Stanley Cup Playoffs are in full force, many of the best players from teams that are not playing are representing their countries at the IIHF World Championships. USA and Norway are set for an epic clash between two squads full of NHL-level talent.

Similar to the Four Nations, this tournament hosts the best hockey players in the world, all fighting for a world championship.
Team USA is star-studded with some names you may be familiar with, including World Juniors standout Zeev Buium and Brady Skjei on the blue line, not to mention Joey Daccord and Jeremey Swayman as options between the pipes for the Americans. Matty Beniers, Tage Thompson, and Clayton Keller are a few of the names you can expect to see attacking the net in the red, white, and blue throughout the tournament.

Game Recap
In the first period, this game looked to be all USA with the American side jumping out to a 4-1 lead after the first period. The Americans added a fifth goal early in the second period and it looked like this game was all but done. But Norway wouldn't go quietly, scoring four unanswered goals to tie the game at five in the third period and send the game to overtime, thanks to a hat trick from Stian Solberg. In overtime, Tage Thompson added a hat trick of his own to score the golden goal and get the win and extra point for the American side, who won the game 6-5.

Thompson USA Player Of The Game
Thompson's hat trick earned him Player of the Game honors, but the USA squad will look to learn from this one ahead of their matchup against Germany on Saturday.
Solberg Norway Player Of The Game
At just 19 years old, Solberg netted a hat trick to try to will Norway back into this game, but it wasn't quite enough. Norway is still in the hunt for its first point and will look to earn it Switzerland on Friday.
USA Wins On Tage Thompson Goal
Tage Thompson gets a hat trick of his own, this one the golden goal to give USA the win. Since this game went to overtime, the USA gets an extra point in the standings. The USA gave up four straight goals, but stayed composed in overtime to seal the game.

USA Power Play
Emil Lilleberg gets booked for holding and heads to the penalty box. The USA will have a power play with about 1:30 left in overtime.
Overtime
Free hockey! Norway scored four unanswered goals, erasing a 5-1 deficit to tie the game at 5, now, we've got overtime for some free hockey between the USA and Norway, all tied up at 5-5. Time for some 3-on-3 hockey to settle this one.
Tie Game
The empty net pays off for Norway as Solberg nets his third goal for a hat trick with just about 1:30 left to play, the game is tied at 5 each. Norway has now scored four unanswered goals to tie this game at five, looking for their first points of the tournament.

Norway Empty Net
Norway has pulled Normann as they look to tie the game against the USA with 2:00 remaining.
Noah Steen Cuts USA Lead To One
With both sides back at full strength, Noah Steen used his speed to breakaway from the USA defense, and slotted a shot between Swayman's legs to bring the score to 5-4 for the USA with nine minutes left to play. Norway has now scored three unanswered goals.
Four On Four
Seconds after the USA's power play began, Frank Nezar gets called for interference, bringing the game to four-on-four for 1:50.
USA Power Play
Michael Brandsegg-Nygard got whistled for interference, giving the USA a power play with 12 minutes left to play.
Deadlocked Start To Third Period
Both teams are fighting for the next goal, with the teams going back and forth, fighting to move the puck towards each goal. So far Norway has the only official shot on goal, but it was a slow roller to Swayman that he easily controlled.
All Norway Second Period
Norway dominated the second period, outscoring the USA 2-1 to bring the score to 5-3 going into the second intermission. After it looked like the USA had dismantled Norway, the Norwegians fought back hard, putting the game back within reach after two periods. Even though the USA leads Norway in shots 27-9, the game is in reach for either team.
Norway Power Play
Brady Skjei got booked for tripping, and Norway has another power play. The Norwegians are 2-3 on power plays today and looking to take advantage again. Norway was unable to capitalize on their advantage for the third time today and both sides are back at full strength.
Martin Ronnild Cuts Into Lead
Pushing the pace to get ahead of all USA defenders, Ronnild took advantage and slotted a shot past Swayman, cutting the USA's lead to 2. Ronnild immediately followed his breakaway goal up with another shot that ricocheted off the far post of Swayman's goal, almost cutting the USA's lead to one.
Solberg Capitalizes On Penalties
With one second remaining in Norway's five on three, Solberg ripped a shot past Jeremy Swayman, slotting it into the far side of the net, cutting into the USA's lead for his second of the day, bringing the score to 5-2.
Norway Power Play
Attempting to screen for Tage Thompson, Frank Nazar got booked for interference, giving Norway a power play. With 30 seconds left the power play, Andrew Peek got whistled for a delay of game, making it a 5 on 3 game for 10 seconds.
Thompson Power Play Goal
Tage Thompson added his second goal of the day on the USA's second power play of the second period on assists from Clayton Keller and Zach Werenski, bringing the lead to 5-1.
USA Dominates First Period
USA scored four goals in the first period, dominating Norway despite giving up a power play goal. Cutter Gautier opened up scoring for the USA with a goal on an assist from Shane Pinto and Will Smith. Clayton Keller wasted no time adding a goal of his own, but then Tage Thompson was sent to the penalty box for a hooking penalty. Norway added a power play goal by Stian Solberg but Thompson quickly made up for his penalty, adding a goal of his own. McCarron finished off the first period scoring with a goal of his own, his first of the tournament.

USA Power Play
With 1 minute left before the first intermission, USA earned a power play on an interference call on Patrick Elvseen. Nothing came of the power play for the Americans but they got two shots on goal.
Michael McCarron Goal
With about two minutes left in the firs period, Michael McCarron and O'Connor executed a perfect pass in front of goal for McCarron to tap the puck in and score his first goal of the tournament, putting USA up three goals.
Tage Thompson Goal
Thompson made up for his penalty that led to a Norway power play goal, ripping a shot past Normann for a goal of his own, bringing the USA lead back to two.
Norway Power Play Goal
With Tage Thompson in the penalty box for hooking, Stian Solberg added a goal for the Norwegian side, attempting to cut into the USA lead. Relive the goal here:

Clayton Keller Goal
Keller followed in Gautier's footsteps, adding a goal of his own to double the USA's lead over Norway before reaching the 10 minute mark in this game. On assists from Jackson Lacombe and Michael Kesselring, Keller adding a first period goal.
Cutter Gautier Goal
The USA star wasted no time adding his first goal of the game, his 10th of the tournament. He ripped a shot past Tobias Normann to open up a high-scoring first period of the American side. Relive it here:
