ESPOO, Finland – James Hagens, one of the top prospects for the 2025 NHL Draft, stands alone with the most productive showing at the IIHF Men’s World Under-18 Championship. With three points over the first half of Team USA’s semifinal against Slovakia, Hagens officially passed Tampa Bay Lightning start Nikita Kucherov for the tournament’s single-tournament scoring record with 22 points.

Kucherov previously held the record since 2011, when he moved past Finland’s Toni Rajala with 21 points for Russia at this event.

In addition to sliding past Kucherov, Hagens also bested Jack Hughes and Will Smith, who each co-held the U.S. single-tournament scoring record with 20 points.

Hagens has had no less than three points in every game at the 2024 U18 Worlds including a six-point performance against Finland to close out the preliminary round.

Team USA is well on its way to the gold-medal game with a perfect record thus far. Hagens will be seeking his second gold medal in as many years at this tournament as he was part of last year’s championship team as one of the underagers.

Hagens had just five points in that tournament. With his two combined tournaments, however, the Long Island native is now ranked fourth all time in career scoring in this tournament with 27 points, edging out Phil Kessel for the spot. Jack Hughes is the tournament’s all-time career scorer with 32 points.

This is not the first time Hagens has made history on the international stage. He also set the single-tournament scoring record at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge with 21 points over seven games in that tournament, finishing one point ahead of teammate Cole Eiserman.

On top of collecting more records, Hagens has also moved past 100 points among all competitions this season, becoming just the 10th player in NTDP history to pass the century mark in a single season.

All other players to hit 100 points were selected or will be selected in the first round of the NHL Draft.

Hagens has long been considered one of the top prospects for the 2025 NHL Draft and has done nothing to dissuade anyone from that opinion in this tournament. Considering the amount of talent that has come through this tournament over the years, this is truly remarkable for him to not only break the record, but break it with another game to play. He could further put the game out of reach.

The Boston College commit is expected to play a big role as a freshman for the Eagles next season as he looks to pad his resume to go No. 1 in 2025.
