2022-23 CCHA Power Rankings
Bowling Green Streaks To Top Spot
Four consecutive conference wins since the last rankings and six straight wins to open the winter semester propelled the Falcons to the top of the CCHA.
Welcome to FloHockey’s bi-monthly power rankings for CCHA hockey. Find out which of the CCHA’s eight teams rise, fall or stay put as the weekly series unfold in the 2022-2023 season.
1. Bowling Green | Last Ranking: 4
Record: 11-5-0-2 (14-12 overall)
Four consecutive conference wins since the last rankings and six straight wins to open the winter semester have propelled the Falcons to the top of the CCHA.
They have scored five goals in four of those contests. The offensive scores its way toward the top of the NCAA, accompanied by the fourth-best power play in the nation.
2. Minnesota State | Last Ranking: 3
Record: 8-4-2-2 (14-9-1 overall)
New year, new Minnesota State?
The No. 17 Mavericks have won four straight, with consecutive series sweeps.
While the latest was a nonconference matchup with Arizona State, confidence should be the highest it has been in Mankato since early November.
The goals are coming, and the defensive is tightening up, as the Mavericks look like revitalized in 2023.

3. Michigan Tech | Last Ranking: 2
Record: 8-4-0-4 (15-7-3 overall)
The No. 14 Huskies claimed the Desert Hockey Classic with a win over No. 6 Boston University for the championship, but the inability to add points doesn’t do much here.
Followed by a split with St. Thomas – while conference rivals stepped it up – has the Huskies slipping a spot, both here and in the standings.
Upcoming Ferris State offers a good chance to wash themselves of three missed points.
4. Bemidji State | Last Ranking: 1
Record: 5-3-4-2 (9-8-5 overall)
Since claiming the No. 1 spot in the first rankings of 2023, the Beavers have gone 0-3-1, including two losses to Bowling Green. Add in an exhibition with Minnesota on New Year’s Eve, and the Beavers haven’t claimed a win over their past five outings.
Now just two points ahead of losing home ice in the conference tournament has the Beavers in such jeopardy.
With four of their final six series scheduled to come against the bottom of the standings, they now have to take advantage.
5. Ferris State | Last Ranking: 6
Record: 6-5-2-1 (10-10-2 overall)
The Bulldogs split their first series of the winter semester with Lake Superior State, where two very different teams showed up for each game.
They’re two points back from overtaking Bemidji State for home ice in the conference tournament, but Michigan Tech, Minnesota State and Bowling Green come as their next three weeks of play.
6. Northern Michigan | Last Ranking: 5
Record: 4-7-3 (11-11 overall)
Four losses over their past five outings smothered a strong start to the season.
Getting swept by Minnesota State before this week’s bye was foreseeable, as the Wildcats have played just six games since Dec. 1.
Now, the Wildcats play every week through the end of February, with a busy schedule and hungry rivals that see Marquette as easy pickings.
7. St. Thomas | Last Ranking: 7
Record: 5-9-0-2 (6-15-1 overall)
The Tommies’ second Division I season continues to see growth, including a comeback win over No. 13 Michigan Tech over the weekend, breaking a three-game losing streak.

With Bowling Green, Arizona State (nonconference) and Minnesota State coming over the next three weeks, the Tommies will continue to develop and relish the chance to add wins and program excitement.
8. Lake Superior State | Last Ranking: 8
Record: 2-12-2 (4-18-2 overall)
The harsh winter matches the harsh season in Sault Ste. Marie.
The Lakers snagged their first win in seven games with a strong 4-1 showing over Ferris State.
With a trip to a streaking Minnesota State program, the excitement isn’t a strong bet to continue.
A heavy group of sophomores could be the bright spot, as the 2022-2023 season has slipped away.
