Best Ways To Tape A Hockey Stick

A hockey stick might be the best friend of a hockey player. It is their most important piece of equipment and needs to be well taken care of.

Taping a hockey stick is one way to keep it in good condition. There are different ways to tape a hockey stick, and each player has his or her own preference.

Why Tape A Hockey Stick

Taping a hockey stick provides several benefits. There are four key advantages:

* Helps strengthen the stick

* Protects the blade from getting damaged

* Provides better grip and control

* Helps absorb vibrations

Strengthening the stick prevents it from breaking. Moreover, absorbing the vibrations allows the player to play more comfortably. Generally, taping a hockey stick is an excellent way to keep it in good condition and improve the player's game.

Steps For Taping A Hockey Stick

Players, especially first-timers, must be familiar with the process to do it quickly and efficiently. Apart from the hockey tape, one will need patience and persistence, just like with playing hockey!

1. Decide the Sections to Tape

Three sections of the hockey stick can be taped:

* The blade

* The shaft

* The handle

2. Choose the Type of Tape

There are two types of hockey tape: cloth and adhesive.

The most common tape hockey players use is the cloth type, similar to old medical bandages. This type gives players a better grip and more control over the stick. Also, there are different colors of cloth tape, giving players the choice to personalize their sticks.

3. Decide the Patterns and Methods

It's important to determine the patterns and methods that enhance the player's performance.

Players may also tape toe-to-heel or heel-to-toe, depending on their preference. The most common patterns and methods are the following:

* The Classic: Covers only the main part of the blade

* The Sock: Tapes the heel all the way to the toe

* Toe Tape Job: Tapes from the center of the blade and covers the toe

* The 5 Strand: Starts past the center of the blade and makes five wraps toward the toe

* The Candy Cane: Starts under the handle grip tape job and spirals down the shaft with a distance between each wrap.

4. Apply The Tape

Tear off a strip that is about 12-18 inches long. The length and size will depend on the section.

Wrap the tape around the chosen section in the desired pattern and ensure no spaces or bumps. Be consistent with the pattern and ensure the tape is tight enough.

5. Secure The Ends

Use a pair of scissors to cut the tape at an angle. This will create a point that can be tucked under the wraps. Once the end is tucked in, press it down to secure it in place.

How a player tapes their hockey stick is a matter of preference. However, it's helpful to get the guidance of an experienced player or coach to learn the ropes. Each way of taping a hockey stick has its own advantages.

Ultimately, it's not as complicated as it seems and does nothing but enhance the player's game.
