High And Wide: Tavares, Thornton, And Transactions
The Arizona Coyotes are winless in 11, Joe Thornton hit an NHL landmark, and Vadim Shipachyov is in limbo.

By Jacob Messing
The Arizona Coyotes remain winless through their first 11 games, Joe Thornton joined the NHL’s top 20 all-time scorers, and Vadim Shipachyov enters contractual limbo.
News: Coyotes Seek Crease Help, Vegas Makes Moves
The Coyotes brought in Scott Wedgewood from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a 2018 fifth-round pick. The Canadiens’ 19-year-old Victor Mete was told he would remain on the roster throughout the season.
Shipachyov’s first NHL contract is going as planned, and while his agent is reportedly seeking a trade out of Vegas the 30-year-old has refused to report to the AHL’s Chicago Wolves, and may be on the verge of a mutual contract termination. Veteran Jason Garrison cleared waivers and will report the Chicago. In a somewhat surprising move, goaltender Antti Niemi was claimed by Florida, which clouds the injury timeline of Roberto Luongo.
In movie-like fashion, Tyler Toffoli scored the OT winner Saturday night with 0.4 seconds remaining.

Star Of The Week: John Tavares
3 GP | 6 G | 1 A | 7 pts. | plus-three | two hat tricks
Tavares’ future on the island remains unclear. The 27-year-old is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the season’s end and lacks the eight-year contract extension that has become the norm for franchise players of his caliber.
Tavares has scored 65 points six times in his eight-year career, including his 28-goal and 47-point campaign during the 2012-13 lockout-shortened season. Should he end up reaching free agency this summer, he’ll be highly coveted, and would be the best name to hit the market in the modern era.
AHL Call-Up To Watch: Dirty Danton
After an eight-game stint with Boston last season with no offense, Danton Heinen has scored two goals and five points in five games.
The 22-year-old forward is showing what the Bruins’ strong farm system holds, and could be playing his way into a full-time role, even when veteran forwards return from injury.
The fourth-round pick from 2014 started his second AHL year with a goal and seven assists through four games before his call-up.
Fantasy Player To Add
Christian Dvorak | LW | Arizona Coyotes
The 58th overall pick from 2014 had a modest rookie season last year, scoring 15 goals and 33 points on a lowly Coyotes team. He has received more ice time under new coach Rick Tocchet this season, and in his last five games has logged four assists, seven shots, and an even defensive rating.
The Coyotes play four times this week, including back-to-back games on Monday and Tuesday. The forward is owned in just 3.6 percent of leagues and he hits and blocks like a defenseman, adding value if your league tracks those stats.
Game To Watch
Pittsburgh Penguins at Edmonton Oilers
Wednesday, Nov. 1, 8:30 PM EST
The 7-5-1 Penguins visit the 3-6-1 Oilers for the second time in two weeks and the second installment of Sidney Crosby versus Connor McDavid.
Phil Kessel scored the OT winner last Tuesday for the 2-1 win in a goalie battle that saw the defending champs barrage Talbot with 44 shots. Leon Draisaitl’s return has sparked the Oilers, and Talbot appears to be settling into the crease as last season’s surprising team seems to be returning to form.
Pittsburgh continues to win, and its high-powered offense could prove too much for Edmonton’s young blue line that awaits the eventual return of veteran Andrej Sekera.
Injuries: Ducks Down
Anaheim’s Patrick Eaves was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome, a curable condition in which the immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system. He’s undergoing treatment, but a timeline to return has not been announced. Kevin Bieksa is out indefinitely with a hand injury suffered in a fight with Philadelphia’s Radko Gudas. Cam Fowler will miss three to seven weeks with a leg injury.
Columbus’ Lukas Sedlak will miss the next six weeks with an ankle injury.
Vancouver’s Troy Stecher will miss four to six weeks with a knee injury.
Florida’s Jared McCann was placed on the IR with a lower-body injury.
Minnesota’s Zach Parise underwent back surgery for a herniated disc and will miss the next two months.
Washington’s Andre Burakovsky will miss six to eight weeks after undergoing surgery on a fractured thumb.
Pittsburgh’s Justin Schultz has a concussion and is out indefinitely. Carter Rowney will miss a minimum of three weeks with a fractured hand.
Colorado’s Colin Wilson has been placed on the IR with an undisclosed injury.
