Extra hockey was on the menu Thursday night when 60 minutes wasn’t enough in the gold medal game of the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship.

After a flurry of intense back-and-forth action, the game came down to USA goaltender Tyler Parsons, who shut down all five of Team Canada's shootout attempts, and teammate Troy Terry, who put on showstopping heroics for the second consecutive game. The U.S. claimed gold over its northern-border neighbor 5-4 after going undefeated in the tournament.

"Before the shootout, I was thinking about trying something different," Terry told ESPN. "As I came down, I decided I just had to try to go five-hole."

Red, white and blue equipment went flying upon Parsons’ final save, and the Americans huddled in disbelief as they let the moment sink in.

Parsons stopped 46 shots, including the five shootout attempts.

“What (Parsons) did during the shootout was very special. You don’t see that very often. He was the story,” USA coach Bob Motzko said after the game.

NHL rookie Auston Matthews shared the excitement for his teammates from last year’s tournament when they claimed the bronze.

Canada opened the scoring when Ottawa Senators prospect Thomas Chabot scored less than five minutes in. Teammate Jeremy Lauzon created a two-goal lead four minutes later.

The 14th overall pick from 2016, Charlie McAvoy, cut Team USA’s deficit in half three minutes into the second and Kieffer Bellows tied it up on the powerplay less than seven minutes later.

Canada restored its two-goal lead on early third period goals from Nicolas Roy and Mathieu Joseph. 

The U.S. would overcome a two-goal deficit again when Bellows scored his second of the game from the left side of Canadian goalie Carter Hart with a one-timer from McAvoy followed by Colin White’s seventh goal of the tournament.

It was clear Parsons was on his game when he had a dramatic sprawling save in overtime during a Canada powerplay.

McAvoy scored a goal and an assist and was named the MVP of the medal round. He finished the tournament with two goals and four assists for six points in seven games.

Team USA went a perfect 7-0 for their first gold since 2013 and fourth in the past seven years.
