Dates to Circle for the 2016-17 NHL Season
Wondering what the can't miss dates are for the upcoming 2016-17 NHL regular season?

Wondering what the can't miss dates are for the upcoming 2016-17 NHL regular season? Yes, we understand that each of the 82 games that your favorite team is playing is a can't-miss game, but besides those contests, are you wondering which games you can't miss? Well, we have you covered.
This one's easy; it's the opening night of the 2016-17 NHL season. Four games will take place on October 12: Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Ottawa Senators, St. Louis Blues vs. Chicago Blackhawks, Calgary Flames vs. Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings vs. San Jose Sharks.
The defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins open their season on October 13, and before the game they will raise the 2015-16 Stanley Cup banner to the rafters. Their opposition that night? The team they bumped from the Eastern Conference Semifinals, the Washington Capitals.
The first outdoor game of the season will take place on October 23, when the Winnipeg Jets play host to the Edmonton Oilers at Investors Group Field, home of the Canadian Football League's Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
The Edmonton Oilers travel to Pittsburgh on November 8, and you'll want to tune in to see Connor McDavid of the Oilers match up against Sidney Crosby of the Penguins. Crosby has been the dominant player of his generation, and if the predictions are true, he will eventually cede that mantle to McDavid.
The Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals met in the first round of the 2016 playoffs and things were chippy to say the least. If the teams have maintained a small percentage of the animosity that developed over the course of that six-game series, won by Washington, this promises to be a rivalry to watch.
The NHL Centennial Classic takes place on January 1 at BMO Field in Toronto. The game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings will serve as a celebration of the 100th anniversaries of both the NHL and the Maple Leafs.
The trade deadline falls on February 28, which means if you're a hockey fan you'll be glued to social media, your television, and/or computer until 3 PM EST on this day.
The surprise trade of the offseason saw the Montreal Canadiens ship P.K. Subban to the Nashville Predators in exchange for Shea Weber. Subban will make his first trip back to Montreal as a member of the Preds on March 2.
The Detroit Red Wings played their first regular-season game at Joe Louis Arena in 1979. On April 9, 2017, the team will play its last regular season game in the arena. Now, the odds are good that the Wings will play some playoff games there as well, since the last time they missed the playoffs was the 1988-89 season. Next year, the team will play at Little Caesars Arena.
April 9 is also the final day of the 2016-17 NHL season.
