USA wins Olympic men’s hockey gold, edging Canada 2-1 in overtime in a final that felt like Canada’s game for long stretches but ended on one decisive finish.

Matt Boldy opened the scoring in the first period on the USA first shot, and Connor Hellebuyck spent the rest of regulation absorbing waves of pressure as Canada piled up chances.

Canada finally broke through late in the second when Cale Makar tied it at 1-1, and the third period turned into a survival test for the Americans as Canada kept coming.

After regulation ended even, the gold medal game moved to 3-on-3 overtime.

Canada carried possession and outshot the USA 42-28 overall, but Jack Hughes found the moment that mattered most, scoring the overtime winner to seal a 2-1 victory and deliver the USA’s first men’s hockey gold medal since 1980.

Recap the game as it happened below.

After the game, watch the FloHockey Daily Reaction Show: Milan-Cortina Presented By Fortune Tires.

USA Wins! USA Wins!

FINAL: Canada 1, USA 2 (OT)

The USA takes the gold against Canada with a Jack Hughes goal in overtime.

The United States men's hockey team has won the gold medal for the first time since 1980.

Canada was dominant in every phase, in all three periods.

But somehow, USA digs deep to score in overtime.

Binnington Glove Save - OT, 19:24

Olympic Hockey Overtime Rules

Canada 1, USA 1

Overtime rules for the gold medal game are different from the semifinals, quarterfinals and group stage.

For the gold medal game, overtime is still a 3-on-3 sudden death, but there is no shootout.

There will be 20 minutes on the clock, but that doesn't really matter. Next goal wins.

End Of Regulation

Canada 1, USA 1

We're headed to 3-on-3 overtime as Canada and USA are still tied after the third period.

Four-On-Four Hockey - 3rd, 3:23

Canada 1, USA 1

Two minutes for high-sticking on Jack Hughes.

USA Power Play, Four Minutes - 3rd, 6:34

Ten Minutes Left - 3rd, 10:59

Canada 1, USA 1

Team USA's offense has stagnated in the third period.

They've had only one shot so far and are happy to just get the puck out of their defensive end.

Connor Hellebuyck has been working hard. Canada has 37 shots this game.

Hellebuyck Stick Save - 3rd, 18:18

Canada 1, USA 1

Connor Hellebuyck with one of the greatest saves you'll ever see, using his stick to stop a point-blank shot, and a nearly-certain goal by Devon Toews.

Third Period Begins - 3rd, 20:00

Canada 1, USA 1

Twenty more minutes left in regulation in this gold-medal game between USA and Canada.

Who Scored For Team Canada?

Canada 1, USA 1

Cale Makar, arguably the best hockey defenseman in the world, scored for Team Canada in the second period of the gold medal game to draw even with the USA.

End Of Second Period

Canada 1, USA 1

Team Canada and Cale Makar tie it up with only a few minutes left in the period.

We've got another 20 minutes coming up, with each team trying to win this gold medal.

There was a big kerfuffle as the period ended. No fights yet, but these teams don't like each other.

Shots after two periods:

  • Canada: 27
  • USA: 16

Macklin Celebrini is blocked from point-blank range against Connor Hellebuyck.

USA still nursing a 1-0 lead, with about four minutes left in the second period.

Massive Penalty Kill - 2nd, 8:04

Canada 0, USA 1

An absolutely massive penalty-killing shift by the USA.

It was 5-on-3 for about a minute-and-a-half and somehow Connor Hellebuyck and the Americans survived.

USA Down Two Men, Power Play - 2nd, 10:05

Canada 0, USA 1

Team Canada will have their best chance yet to score against Connor Hellebuyck.

Two minutes for holding on Jake Guentzel.

Two minutes for hooking on Charlie McAvoy.

McDavid Stuffed By Hellebuyck Breakaway - 2nd, 10:33

Canada 0, USA 1

USA and Canada open the second period, with the Americans holding a 1-0 lead.

Who Scored For USA Hockey Today

Two minutes for hooking on Shea Theodore.

Theodore stopped Brock Nelson as he headed towards the Canadian net.

Canada Dominating Possession - 1st, 3:50

Despite the USA 1-0 lead, Canada have absolutely dominated possession and offensive opportunities.

When USA has had a chance, it's on a breakaway or from a face-off win in the Canadian end.

Hellebuyck Being Tested - 1st, 8:38

Canada 0, USA 1

Team Canada has constantly been testing USA goalie Connor Hellebuyck.

The largely Canadian crowd loved it.

Canada certainly getting in the groove.

The Canadians already have three shots on goal. None for USA.

Jarvis Chance - 1st, 17:59

Canada 0, USA 0

Seth Jarvis had Team Canada's first chance of the day, right in front of Hellebuyck, who was able to cover the puck up.

Some extra pushing after the play stopped, I expect that's not the first time we'll see that.

USA Comes Out Firing - 1st, 18:19

Canada 0, USA 0

Team USA took about five shots in their first shift, none on goal, but the forecheck was pressing early with the Tkachucks.
