Canada Women's Hockey Puts Up 50 Shots Against Switzerland For First Win
Canada Women's Hockey Puts Up 50 Shots Against Switzerland For First Win
Canada opened their journey for Olympic gold vs Switzerland on Saturday, Feb. 7. Read the game recap and watch highlights from Milan Cortina 2026.

After Thursday's postponement due to norovirus, fans of Canada women's hockey were a bit numb after waiting so long to see their team hit the ice at Milan Cortina 2026.
It was all systems "go" on Team Canada's potential sixth Olympic gold medal and it started a Saturday night puck drop against Switzerland at Milano Rho Ice Hockey Arena.
Sixteen players that helped Canada to the gold in Beijing returned to wear the maple leaf. One of which, Marie-Philip Poulin, was just two goals away from becoming the Olympics all-time leading goal scorer.
Switzerland stood as the first hurdle, initially expecting to have a glance at how Canada might play against Finland, but now was under the spotlight to show other teams their first look at the gold medal favorites.
Amongst the players to watch included many PWHL veterans like Boston Fleet's Alina Müller, who scored a late power play goal in the third period to spur on Friday's eventual comeback win over Czechia in the shootout.

Canada Puts Up 50 Shots Against Switzerland For First Olympic Win
Maschmeyer earns the shutout with just 6 shots on goal from the Swiss.
Canada had three power play goals and one 5-on-5 to make it a 4-0 game after what was a slow start in the first period to their 2026 Winter Olympics (and postponement vs. Finland).
Three goals in the third period for Canada sealed the deal after what looked like a game that could've easily saw overtime or even a shootout if their offensive firepower wasn't able to get comfortable.
Swiss goalie Saskia Maurer was the player of the game—making an incredible 51 saves against one of the best hockey teams in the world.
Watts Goal! Finds Screen, Beats Maurer Glove High- 3:16 3rd
CAN 4, SUI 0
Off the faceoff, Canada held possession in the Swiss zone and gave Daryl Watts the space she needed to cut-in and cut-out and find a screen from the Swiss defender to bounce the puck off of Maurer's glove and into the net.
Sarah Nurse and Claire Thompson on the assist.
You can tell the offensive firepower of this elite Canadian roster is finally finding their groove.
Watts finishes the game bringing the score to 4-0🔥😎

Great Setup And Elite Tip-In Gives Canada 3-0 Lead - 6:24 3rd
CAN 3, SUI 0
First-time Olympian Julia Gosling gets her first point on a very skillful tip in past Maurer for the three goal lead on the power play. Claire Thompson made a great pass to Erin Ambrose at the point, who sent it into the traffic where Gosling and Jenner took a shot at the deflection.
Shots on goal:
- CAN: 46
- SUI: 6
Fifth Switzerland Penalty Sends Vallario To Box - 7:00 3rd
CAN 2, SUI 0
Turnbull drew the penalty on Vallario this time to send Canada on their fifth power play, 2-4.
Poulin threw a beautiful attempt high glove side but Maurer made the stop right into the pocket of her glove before getting some praise from her squad. Poulin is clearly trying to find her two goals to make history but has yet to find the right shot selection.
Canada Kills Off Power Play With Relative Ease - 10:00 3rd
CAN 2, SUI 0
The Swiss were able to get some time in Canada's zone and throw one shot on Maschmeyer, her first since the second period, but didn't see a lot of light. Turnbull almost had a beautiful goal out of the box but whiffed the backhand lift as Maurer dove for the save.
You can see the exhaustion starting to creep as discipline wavers for both teams, mistakes start to show and passes don't connect like they were in the first twenty.

Switzerland Goes On Power Play, Interference - 12:46 3rd
CAN 2, SUI 0
After Blayre Turnbull brought down Switzerland's Nicole Vallario, the Canadian penalty kill unit was called upon for the first time.
Although the Swiss have played in survival mode nearly the entire game, they'll get a chance now to tally a huge goal and close the gap to just one once again as they lean on Maurer to keep making saves.
Fillier Hits The Rebound, Scores Second Canada PP Goal - 15:57 3rd
CAN 2, SUI 0
On her 5th shot of the game, Sarah Fillier finally found the net wide open as the puck rebounded off the back wall with speed. It would've been nearly impossible for Maurer to track the puck and get over to make the save across the crease.
Shots on goal:
- CAN: 37
- SUI: 3
Wey Sent Back To The Box Again, Canada On 4th Power Play - 16:02 3rd
CAN 1, SUI 0
Less than 17 seconds after leaving the box, Ivana Wey took another Canadian skater down into the boards from behind. Officials reviewed the call and agreed it was an illegal hit as Wey expressed her obvious frustration.
Fillier Boarded By Wey, Canada Power Play Killed Off - 16:07 3rd
CAN 1, SUI 0
Fillier was boarded by Ivana Wey to set up Canada on their third power play of the game. We'll see if Spooner can double down.
Wheatley blocked the first PP shot.
Maurer stopped the second from Fillier to Spooner again at the front of the net.
Watts tried to dangle across the left faceoff dot and pull up a shot but it went wide.
Puck movement was strong for Canada but Maurer and the Swiss defense came up strong in desperation mode as they killed off the power play.
Back For The Third - 20:00 3rd
CAN 1, SUI 0
Canada leads 1-0 heading into the final frame as they search for a way past Saskia Maurer to secure their first win on the journey to a potential 6th Olympic gold medal.
Maurer Has Quickly Become The Focal Point - End of 2nd Period
CAN 1, SUI 0
As the clock passes three minutes remaining in the second frame, you can feel the Swiss trying to surge energy back into their favor as they fight for Maurer who has been outstanding between the pipes.
Saskia Maurer has been the star of the game so far, nearing the 30-save mark despite Spooner's goal to give Canada the lead.
Canada's started showing some exhaustion, slowing down the game in the waning minutes of the period and opening up time and space on the ice.
Shots on goal:
- CAN: 30
- SUI: 3
Maurer Recovers, Keeps Moving Well - 5:22 2nd
CAN 1, SUI 0
As Canada passes the 20-shot mark, the Swiss goalie Maurer has been moving extremely well and staying calm despite all of the chaos out in front of her crease.
One wonders if she'll be able to keep it up through all sixty minutes.
Shots on goal:
- CAN: 24
- SUI: 3
Canada Scores! Spooner Nets Power Play Goal - 12:58 2nd
CAN 1, SUI 0
Just 19 seconds into the power play, Team Canada finally broke through Maurer with a rebound cleanup by Toronto Sceptres' Natalie Spooner—the 13th forward on the lineup playing in the trenches out front of the net.
She got a nice rebound off of an attempt by Poulin to force it in. Sarah Fillier also credited with an assist on the seam pass to set up Poulin.

Swiss Push Back But Sends Canada On Power Play - 13:23 2nd
CAN 0, SUI 0
Play in the second period looked far closer between the two sides as we
Switzerland was called for another illegal hit penalty, this time on the critical Alina Muller, to send Canada on their second power play of the game.
Swiss Kills Canada Power Play To Open 2nd - 17:51 2nd
CAN 0, SUI 0
Maschmeyer and Maurer return to their creases for the second twenty minutes of this game. Canada has about 55 seconds left on the power play with Marti in the box.
Poulin had a chance from the slot but Sinja Leemann was there to make the block and the clock ran out.
One-Sided Affair Remains Tied, Canada vs Switzerland - End of 1st Period
CAN 0, SUI 0
Despite the offensive onslaught from Team Canada to open their first game of the 2026 Winter Olympics, Switzerland withstood the flurry and even struck back with their own aggression.
Canada's been moving the puck well and holding the Swiss out of their own zone, but have yet to convert with at least two posts and almost all of the shots on goal.
In the late moments of the period, the Swiss penalty kill unit was called upon to make the stop and head into the locker rooms with the score even.
They delivered, continuing the Swiss defense's improvement since the opening moments of the game.
Canada's clearly leaning onto Renata Fast with four shots on goal and the most time on ice for either team with 9:37.
Maurer has been rock solid for the Swiss after 20.
Shots on goal:
- CAN: 17
- SUI: 2

Ambrose Takes A Hard Hit, Marti Sent To Box - 0:59 1st
CAN 0, SUI 0
Canada got their first power play of the 2026 Olympics after an illegal hit from Marti on Montreal Victoire's Erin Ambrose into the boards put them up a player.
On the next play, matching roughing penalties came out on Stalder and Watts.
Maurer made a great save off of the Poulin delivery from a Fast pass to open the power play shooting by Canada.
Swiss Defense Finds Footing - 4:40 1st
CAN 0, SUI 0
Although nearly all shots went Canada's way in the first 15 minutes of the period, the middle portion of the period has looked much better for Switzerland's defense. Shots have slowed to just 3 from Canada in the past six minutes with blocks and better play behind the net.
SUI defender Annic Buchi took a hard hit from Emily Clark, she went down the tunnel before the intermission after returning to the bench.
Canada Circling, Goal Waved Off Due To High Stick - 9:00 1st
CAN 0, SUI 0
The puck found the back of the net but it was only after Sarah Nurse's stick reached to the sky to tip the puck in past Maurer. The goal was immediately waved off.
Shots on goal:
- CAN: 12
- SUI: 1
Ivana Wey and Alina Marti Get First Chance For SUI - 9:50 1st
CAN 0, SUI 0
Physicality between the two has picked up as they settle into the first period. Switzerland's offensive frustrations continue without a shot on goal. Blayre Turnbull has been relentless near the halfway point, entering the zone and driving the net with speed a number of times.
Maurer sealed the post nicely on a Jenner attempt that bounced off the outside.
Switzerland got their first good chance at Maschmeyer at the halfway point, with a breakout by Ivana Wey and Alina Marti. A good backcheck kept Marti from making contact, though.
Canada's Defense Stifles Swiss - 14:00 1st
CAN 0, SUI 0
Canada defense is doing a good job holding Switzerland out of their zone. The few times they have been able to get the puck deep, they get stuffed against the wall before Canada easily clears the puck.
Eight shots on goal for CAN, zero for SUI.
Sarah Nurse Opens Shooting, Maurer Makes The Stop - 17:22 1st
CAN 0, SUI 0
Sarah Nurse chooses the quick release from the slot after taking the delivery from Fillier to put the first shot on Maurer who easily collected the puck.
Fast has been solid early, creating two offensive chances for Canada but couldn't quite convert after finding the post on a backhand lift.
Canada earned the first six shots on goal in just two and a half minutes.
