The AHL and the Professional Hockey Players’ Association have reached a tentative agreement on a new collective bargaining agreement.

The agreement will require approval from both the league’s board of governors and the PHPA’s AHL members. A timeline for that approval is not known. The two sides’ previous agreement had expired this past August, but they have played the 2025-26 season without disruption.

If approved, it will be the first agreement with AHL president and CEO Scott Howson and PHPA executive director Brian Ramsay, who took over in August 2024. The former football player had been executive director of the Canadian Football League Players’ Association for nine years before replacing Larry Landon at the PHPA. The PHPA was established in 1968 and later added ECHL members in 1995.

It is the second announcement in recent weeks of a new tentative CBA agreement involving the PHPA. The ECHL and the PHPA announced a new five-year agreement after the players had announced a brief strike that began Dec. 26. The two sides announced a tentative agreement Dec. 27, and official approval followed Dec. 30. Play resumed that same night, and games postponed during the strike will need to be rescheduled.
