A 6-1 home loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night and a roster hit hard by injuries have brought changes to the Montreal Canadiens.

Immediately following the loss, Montreal recalled goaltender Jacob Fowler, defenseman Adam Engstrom, and forward Owen Beck from the Laval Rocket.

For Fowler, 21, it will be his first NHL recall since he turned pro late last season after a stellar NCAA career at Boston College. The 2023 third-round pick has been excellent for the North Division-leading Rocket, going 10-5-0 | 2.09 | .919 for the Rocket. His 15 games tie him for second in the AHL and first among rookie netminders. He has posted three shutouts as well, tying him for the AHL lead.

Engström, who played his first two NHL games on a recall last month, is a 22-year-old with 5-11-16 in 20 games with the Rocket. That point total leads all Laval defensemen and puts him a fourth-place tie in the AHL at the position. The Canadiens took him in the third round of the 2022 NHL Draft. Another product of the 2022 NHL Draft is Beck, 21, who had 15 goals as a rookie last season with the Rocket and was selected for the AHL All-Star Classic. He has played 15 career games with the Habs, including a pair this season. In 22 games for Laval this season, he is 3-8-11.

Tampa Bay chased Canadiens starter Jakub Dobeš with three first-period goals before Samuel Montembeault took the final two periods in relief. The Canadiens visit the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday before moving on for a Saturday road match-up with the New York Rangers. Montreal is in the middle of a stretch of 11 games in 19 nights and will play 15 times in December. Tuesday’s loss dropped Montreal to 15-11-3 through 29 games and two points out of an Eastern Conference wild-card spot.

Laval is back in action Wednesday night at Place Bell when the Toronto Marlies visit for a two-game set. The Rocket, last season’s AHL regular-season champion, are 16-7-0-0 and just three points off the Eastern Conference lead.
