FloHockey AHL Power Rankings: Providence Bruins, Laval Rocket Rising
The Grand Rapids Griffins continue to reign over the AHL, but the Providence Bruins are in hot pursuit.

Patrick Williams again will deliver the FloHockey AHL Power Rankings throughout the regular season.
The Grand Rapids Griffins continue to reign over the AHL, but the Providence Bruins are in hot pursuit. Several NHL recalls have hardly slowed down the P-Bruins, who have relied on excellent depth to continue collecting wins. With the AHL regular season having reached its quarter point, this week will also expand the rankings to the top half of clubs across the league as teams begin to take a more concrete form after the standard early-season adjustment time that comes every year.

Here is how this week’s FloHockey AHL Power Rankings look.
1) Grand Rapids Griffins (--)
Another week, another dominant effort by the Griffins. They started off their week by dialing up 16 goals in a pair of road wins. It was then back to Van Andel Arena, where they took two more victories. Sebastian Cossa picked up another shutout. A home date Wednesday with the Cleveland Monsters begins the Griffins’ week. But a two-game weekend trip to Toronto opens a stretch of five of the next seven games on the road for the Griffins. It will be a solid test for a team that has aced all of them so far. Van Andel Arena management might want to keep the event calendar open this spring.

2) Providence Bruins (--)
One thing is for sure – the P-Bruins will not be seeing sniper Matěj Blümel return any time soon. On recall to the Boston Bruins, he left last Wednesday’s game with a lower-body injury and has been put on long-term injured reserve. Blümel had a league-leading 39 goals last season for the Texas Stars before signing with Boston in the offseason. But even without Blümel, Georgii Merkulov, Alex Steeves, and Riley Tufte on an Ontario swing, the P-Bruins went into Belleville and ripped off 12 goals in a pair of wins. Jacob Perreault has gone 3-2-5 in six games since his recall from the ECHL’s Maine Mariners. Depth reigns in Providence. In a stretch of 11 of 13 games on the road, they get to stop by home ice this Friday to begin a home-and-home series with the Springfield Thunderbirds.

3) Laval Rocket (+2)
Fast and efficient, the Rocket play some of the most connected hockey in the entire league. Now the Rocket have added power forward Sammy Blais, who had a dominant postseason last spring for the Calder Cup champion Abbotsford Canucks. They visited Lehigh Valley and Hershey this past weekend – two tough opponents – and came away with victories. This is a deep squad. Intense North Division rivalries are ahead for the Rocket, who will visit Belleville for a pair of weekend games before the Toronto Marlies come to Place Bell next week for a pair of match-ups.

4) Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (-1)
After wins against the Hershey Bears and Lehigh Valley Phantoms, the Penguins took a 6-2 thumping on their return trip to Hershey last Saturday night. Last Saturday got ugly for the Penguins, but sometimes those bad nights can jolt a team back to reality. Now they get another crack at those two opponents this weekend with the Phantoms coming back to Wilkes-Barre and then another trip down I-81 to Hershey. Sergei Murashov is back from the Pittsburgh Penguins to team up with Joel Blomqvist in one of the AHL’s best goaltending tandems.

5) Colorado Eagles (-1)
It’s another pair of match-ups with the Rockford IceHogs for the Eagles. This time they hit the road. In a pair of October games in Colorado, the Eagles took a 5-0 victory before dropping a 4-0 decision. The Eagles continue to pick up wins, but one gets the sense that this team can be even better. Take the power play, which is a very respectable 10th in the AHL. With the talent the Eagles possess, though, they could be a top-five power-play team and pull out a few more victories.
6) Milwaukee Admirals (NR)
The power play continues to dominate for the Admirals, who are at a league-best 32.8 percent as they finish the first quarter of their season. After a chippy 7-2 win last Wednesday facing the visiting Iowa Wild, the Admirals will get that rematch to begin their week. Last weekend featured a split of a home-and-home series with Rockford. This weekend brings a pair of games in Chicago. The Central Division animosity should only intensify this week with the Admirals right in the middle of those skirmishes.
7) Charlotte Checkers (--)
Having handled Toronto in the opener of a two-game set at Bojangles Coliseum, the Checkers stumbled badly in the rematch by going down 3-0 in the opening period last Saturday and eventually losing. Every team will have a bad afternoon, though, and the Checkers have kept those to a minimum so far. Charlotte continues to aggressively patch and bolster its line-up. The latest addition is forward Robby Fabbri, who is bringing 442 games of NHL experience with him to Charlotte on a professional tryout. Up next is a Friday-Saturday match-up with the visiting Rochester Americans.
8) San Jose Barracuda (+2)
San Jose’s 2-5-0-0 October performance is quickly becoming a memory now. The Barracuda went 10-1-1-1 in November. Yes, three of those victories came against the last-place Abbotsford Canucks. But the Barracuda also registered wins against the Calgary Wranglers and Ontario Reign among others in November. They added to that list by getting a split at Colorado last weekend. Rookie forward Igor Chernyshov stacked up 10 goals in 13 games for November. The talent goes beyond Chernyshov for a team brimming with prospects.

9) Lehigh Valley Phantoms (--)
Lehigh Valley got very good news to start their week in adding rookie blueliner Oliver Bonk on loan from the Philadelphia Flyers. Bonk, 20, is back after an injury that delayed the start of his regular season, and this is a 2023 first-round pick coming out of the prestigious London Knights program now joining the Lehigh Valley back end. Adam Ginning is around for further help after clearing waivers. A busy weekend awaits the Phantoms, who go to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Friday, face the Utica Comets at home on Saturday, and then visit Hershey.
10) Manitoba Moose (NR)
Breaking into the top-10 for the first time this season are the Moose, who have gone on an 8-2-0-0 run since Nov. 7 to undo the damage from a mediocre October. Three of those wins came at home against the Chicago Wolves. The Moose are also thriving even with Thomas Milic on recall to the Winnipeg Jets in Connor Hellebuyck’s absence. They get another engagement with the Wolves on Wednesday, this time at Allstate Arena. After two games at Iowa, they will be back on Winnipeg ice for the rest of the month for another six-game homestand.

11) Syracuse Crunch (NR)
Syracuse has beaten up on Utica plenty this season, winning all five of the teams’ meetings so far. This week changes up the schedule a bit for the Crunch, who will head to Cleveland for a pair of games. Syracuse has some of the AHL’s most ideally located geography, a centralized location that means plenty of time at home. But they get a chance to get some rare extended time away from home in the next month with nine of their next 11 games on the road.
12) Hershey Bears (8)
Speaking of location, the Bears have long enjoyed a convenient spot on the AHL map. Between last Wednesday and Jan. 16, the Bears will be on the road for just three games. In that span, they will also not leave the state of Pennsylvania. Hershey got that 6-2 win last Saturday, but it came between a pair of home losses. In the middle of a franchise-record nine-game homestand, this month is the time to pick up points.
13) Ontario Reign (NR)
The Ontario roster got a new look Tuesday morning with mainstay Akil Thomas leaving in a trade to the St. Louis Blues. Coming in return is forward Nikita Alexandrov.
14) Rochester Americans (NR)
A home clunker against Cleveland last Wednesday was the bad news. To their credit, the Amerks rebounded two nights later when the Crunch visited.
15) Chicago Wolves (NR)
A glut of meetings with Manitoba came at a bad time for the Wolves. After Wednesday’s face-off at Allstate Arena, the teams do not meet until Jan. 11. However, Milwaukee takes Manitoba’s place on the calendar for the Wolves. Friday begins a stretch of four contests against the Admirals in Chicago’s next five games.
16) Coachella Valley Firebirds (NR)
Second-year forward Jagger Firkus has been excellent. After an up-and-down first month of their season, the Firebirds are starting to find themselves a bit.
