Flyers Pick Jett Luchanko Traded To Brantford Bulldogs In OHL Blockbuster

The Brantford Bulldogs and Guelph Storm made a blockbuster deal that both teams hope leads to Memorial Cup success in 2026 and 2027, respectively.

The Brantford Bulldogs have yet to lose a game in regulation over 23 games played this season, but if you think they’re satisfied, think again. The Bulldogs swung their second blockbuster trade of the season by acquiring Philadelphia Flyers first-round pick Jett Luchanko from the Guelph Storm.

The Bulldogs sent rookie Layne Gallacher and a slew of draft picks to Guelph to get the deal done. For Brantford, they get a win-now player, while the Storm are building up towards next year’s Memorial Cup with a promising player in Gallacher and a lot of draft picks to use any number of ways to build up their roster for their 2027 run.

Adding a player of Luchanko’s caliber puts Brantford over the top in what could be termed a junior hockey super team. After they picked up Maple Leafs first-rounder Ben Danford in a trade a few weeks back, Brantford now boasts five first-round draft picks on its roster including Luchanko, Danford, Jake O’Brien (SEA), Marek Vanacker (CHI) and Adam Jiříček (STL). That also now makes 11 NHL-drafted players on the Bulldogs roster.

On top of that, they have a projected first-rounder for 2026 in Caleb Malhotra, who is currently participating as a member of Team CHL at the CHL USA Prospects Challenge in Alberta this week.

The addition of Luchanko brings a healthy dose of speed to the Brantford lineup, as well as a dogged two-way player who can help just as much in the goal-prevention category as he can in adding to the offense.

Luchanko had 17 points in 11 games with Guelph since he was returned to the team by the Flyers earlier this fall. He appeared in four NHL games at the start of this season with Philly, the same number he played in a brief stint last season.

In his fourth OHL season, Luchanko had been a co-captain for the Storm the last two seasons. He has 161 points in 171 OHL games over his junior hockey career. He won a gold medal with Canada at the 2024 World Under-18 Championship and was a member of Canada’s World Junior team last season. He is a strong candidate for inclusion again this year.

With the move to Brantford, one could expect Luchanko’s offensive numbers to go up on a team that has scored 118 goals so far this season, averaging more than five per game.

As for Brantford, it’s hard to see a team on paper that is going to be able to knock them off the path they’re on. They out-score everyone by an average of nearly three goals per game with a plus-60 goal differential. They have won 18 of 23 with no regulation losses, four overtime losses and one shootout loss.

They currently have the OHL’s top two scorers in O’Brien and Adam Benák (MIN) at 40 and 38 points, respectively. Vanacker leads the OHL in goals with 21 and goalie Ryerson Leenders is tied for the league lead with a .924 save percentage.

As for Guelph, this deal signals their eyes on the future and next season. Luchanko would not have been there next year and this allows them to make sure they make the most of one of their key assets to start building the foundation for hosting the Memorial Cup.

The new-look Brantford Bulldogs will return to action Friday night on the road against the Brampton Steelheads, while Guelph will be at home against Windsor.
