AHA Women's Notes: Penn State Remains Dominant, Three AHA Matchups On Tap

It’s another busy weekend of Atlantic Hockey America as three conference matchups decorate the slate. No. 6 Penn State heads to RIT, Mercyhurst heads to Syracuse and Robert Morris visits Lindenwood.

Here’s what fans can watch for in AHA women’s hockey.

Perfect Start For Penn State

Penn State continued its dominance last weekend with 7-0 and 11-2 wins over Syracuse.

The Nittany Lions improved to 14-0-0 and are the nation’s final unbeaten team. Penn State also owns the nation’s longest win streak and has out-scored its opponents 74-10, including a 58-4 mark in AHA play.

As for that 14-game heater, the nation’s next longest active streak belongs to Northeastern and Ohio State – both of which have won six straight.

Penn State travels to RIT for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday, which are set for 6 p.m. and 3 p.m. EST. The Nittany Lions currently hold a 16-point lead atop the AHA standings – 16 ahead of Mercyhurst and 17 ahead of RIT.

Penn State will play 11 of its next 12 games on the road – the lone home contest coming Dec. 30 against Cornell. The Nittany Lions are 6-0-0 in road games this season.

Tight Race Ahead

Make no mistake, there’s plenty of hockey left, as five AHA teams have played eight games and only two have played 10 – Penn State and Delaware. All seven AHA schools will play 24 regular-season conference games.

Penn State is clearly the frontrunner and as mentioned above, they’ve likely built an insurmountable lead atop the standings. However, the rest of the pack appears to be a log jam.

Second and sixth place are separated by just six points, and every weekend feels like a game of musical chairs. Delaware sits at the bottom of the conference with five points, yet the Blue Hens are technically just five points shy of fourth – which would earn a home playoff game on Feb. 21. The full postseason format can be viewed here.

With only two more full weekends of AHA play left before the holiday break – Dec. 5-6 being the other – points are at a premium. And the end of the regular season (Feb. 14) will be here before teams know it.

Each team – in order of the current standings – has the following amount of games remaining before the break; Penn State (4/2), Mercyhurst (6/4), RIT (6/6), Syracuse (7/4), Lindenwood (6/4), Robert Morris (8/6), Delaware (4/2).

Women’s Notes

  • Delaware earned its first AHA win last Friday with a 5-3 victory over Lindenwood. Kaitlin Finnegan scored twice in the win while Charlotte Payne made 32 saves.
  • The AHA announced its Players of the Week on Tuesday. Penn State forward Katelyn Roberts, Penn State defenseman Kendall Butze, RIT goaltender Sophia Bellina and RIT defenseman Riley Gramlich (rookie) took home the respective honors.
  • Since Nov. 1, Bellina's .952 save percentage is the fourth-highest among Division I goaltenders (min. 4 GP). The senior is 6-7-0 this season with a 1.90 GAA and .939 save percentage overall.
  • Lindenwood freshman Michaela Paulinyova currently owns a four-game point streak. Paulinyova has 10 points (4-6-10) through 16 games this season, which is tied for the team lead.
  • Mercyhurst head coach Mike Sisti enters this weekend with 598 career wins. He’d become just the second active Division I women’s coach in the 600-win club. The Lakers split their series against RIT last weekend and will head to Syracuse for a pair. Both games will be available on FloHockey, beginning at 6 p.m. EST on Friday and 3 p.m. on Saturday.
  • Mercyhurst received four votes in this week’s USCHO Poll while RIT received one.
