“Hosting the Memorial Cup in 2027 is an incredible honour for our organization and our city,” Scott Walker, Guelph Storm President of Hockey Operations, said in a statement. “This event is the pinnacle of junior hockey, and bringing it to Guelph during our bicentennial year makes it even more special. We’re excited to showcase our passionate fans, our community, and the tradition of excellence that defines the Storm.”
“We are thrilled to be bringing the 2027 Memorial Cup presented by Kubota to Guelph,” said Dan MacKenzie, President of the CHL. “The Storm put forward an outstanding bid that showcased not only their organizational strength, but also the passion, vision, and community spirit that make the Royal City such a special junior hockey market. With the Memorial Cup returning to Guelph in the same year the city marks its bicentennial, fans can expect an unforgettable event that celebrates Guelph’s history and the tournament’s rich tradition, while providing a world-class experience for players, fans, and partners alike.”
In concert with the Memorial Cup, 2027 is a big year for the city of Guelph. It will mark 200 years since its establishment, with the Memorial Cup being integrated into the bicentennial celebration calendar.
Guelph last hosted the Mem Cup in 2002. The city also co-hosted the event in 1962 with Kitchener and Hamilton.
The Guelph Storm, which will receive an automatic bid to compete in the tournament, have never won the Memorial Cup, but the city of Guelph has celebrated two Canadian national titles. The Guelph Biltmore Mad Hatters won it in 1952, while the Guelph Platers won the coveted trophy in 1986. The Storm have made six trips to the Memorial Cup, most recently in 2019.
Exact dates for the 2027 Memorial Cup will be announced at a later date.
