FloHockey AHL Power Rankings: Grand Rapids Griffins Still Tops
The Grand Rapids Griffins took their first defeat of the season, but they still own the top spot in the FloHockey AHL Power Rankings this week.

Patrick Williams again will deliver the FloHockey AHL Power Rankings throughout the regular season.
The Grand Rapids Griffins still have a grasp on the top spot in the Power Rankings. However, they could be dealing with some trouble in net, and there is no shortage of potential challengers for that top spot. The Providence Bruins and Colorado Eagles certainly have not shown any sign of slowing down as the AHL regular season ticks past the one-month mark.
Here is how this week’s top-10 group looks.
1) Grand Rapids Griffins (--)
Somebody finally dented the Griffins, who lost in a 4-3 shootout at Chicago last Sunday. They still are the AHL’s lone team that is undefeated in regulation play, though, as they prepare for a pair of home dates against the Toronto Marlies on Wednesday and Friday. But the Griffins could be facing their first significant setback this season, and it involves the exceptional goaltending duo of Sebastian Cossa and Michal Postava. Cossa missed the game at Chicago, and then Postava left early in that same game. That situation has prompted the recalls of Carter Gylander and Luke Pavicich from the ECHL. All of this could simply be a minor setback, but it bears watching.

2) Providence Bruins (--)
Providence’s potent attack has been much of their story in the season’s first month, but they can win the low-scoring decisions as well. They went into Cleveland last weekend and grabbed a pair of victories behind excellent goaltending from Michael DiPietro (42 saves in a 2-1 win last Friday) and Simon Zajicek (26 stops last Saturday on his way to a 3-2 shootout victory. Forward Alex Steeves is on recall to the Boston Bruins, which does take some bite out of the Providence line-up, but there are still plenty of goals available from this group. Up next are the Hartford Wolf Pack at home Wednesday in one of the AHL’s longest-running rivalries.

3) Colorado Eagles (--)
After a dominant effort in a pair of home victories against Abbotsford last weekend, the Eagles have entered a very quiet portion of their schedule. They play just twice in a 13-day span; those two games come at home Friday and Saturday when the Tucson Roadrunners arrive. Last Friday they held the Canucks to just 11 shots in a 4-1 win. The next night had former Canuck Tristan Nielsen’s two goals carrying them to their league-leading 11th victory. Second in the AHL on both the power play and penalty kill, this team is also tied with Providence for first overall with an even two goals surrendered per game.
4) Milwaukee Admirals (+5)
Matt Murray, a Second Team AHL All-Star selection last season, is back and dominant again. He held the Rockford IceHogs to one goal on 48 shots to sweep a home-and-home series last weekend. That work made him the Howies Hockey Tape/AHL Player of the Week pick. Like Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, the Admirals have to contend with their parent team, the Nashville Predators, being stationed in Stockholm this week. Joakim Kemell and Zach L’Heureux are two top forwards with Nashville for now. A Central Division trio – Chicago, Manitoba, and Texas – rolls through Milwaukee this week.
5) Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (--)
A 4-0 home win against the Utica Comets last Saturday salvaged something from what had been a rocky week for the Penguins. They gave up a 3-0 third-period lead in an eventual overtime loss to Toronto before Rochester piled up four first-period goals on them in another setback last Friday. But Maxim Pavlenko provided a 20-save shutout in his first AHL start to finish off the week. Standout goaltender Sergei Murashov is on recall to the Pittsburgh Penguins as forwards Danton Heinen and Joona Koppanen along with defenseman Ryan Graves. With the NHL team in Stockholm this week, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton will have to go without any help from up top as they get ready for a home-and-home series with the Bridgeport Islanders that starts Wednesday morning.
6) Laval Rocket (NR)
In winning five of their past six games, the Rocket have allowed just 10 goals in that span. Rookie netminder Jacob Fowler has been strong in a new tandem with veteran offseason signing Kaapo Kähkönen. David Reinbacher has gotten four games on the Laval blue line as he continues to catch up from a preseason injury. After a career-high 26 goals last season with the Rocket, Laurent Dauphin already has struck eight times through 13 games. A three-game New England swing starts Wednesday at Springfield.

7) Henderson Silver Knights (-3)
Three losses in four nights saw the Silver Knights give up 15 goals. With goaltender Carl Lindbom still on recall to the Vegas Golden Knights, plenty has been asked from Jesper Vikman and Cameron Whitehead to pick up that workload. This is where the rest of the team will need to help carry the Silver Knights through some of these standard early-season challenges. Up next is a visit from the Calgary Wranglers this weekend.
8) Rochester Americans (--)
Rochester dropped two of three games last week, but this is a team dealing with several recalls to the Buffalo Sabres. Defenseman Zac Jones is in Buffalo as are forwards Josh Dunne, Noah Östlund, and Isak Rosén. Östlund and Rosén are first-round picks, of course, but don’t underestimate the importance of someone like Dunne to any team’s line-up. Still, the Amerks got something in return Tuesday when Buffalo sent down forward Carson Meyer as they get ready to host the Belleville Senators on Wednesday. Then it’s back on the road for a quick trip through Hartford and Bridgeport this weekend.

9) Syracuse Crunch (-2)
Last week started well enough for the Crunch, who went into Rochester and put up five goals on Devon Levi and the Amerks. But then they went south to Charlotte and took a pair of defeats. This Saturday sees the B-Sens come back to Syracuse after hanging seven goals on the Crunch there back on Nov. 1.
10) Lehigh Valley Phantoms (NR)
Joining the top-10 group are the Phantoms, who have quietly gone about their early business and a grinding schedule. Playing a stretch of eight of nine games on the road, they went 5-2-0-1. Then they came home and handled Toronto at PPL Center, 3-2, last Saturday. With a 3-in-3 weekend ahead of them, the schedule certainly does not lighten up much for the Phantoms. They have gotten into penalty trouble, and the penalty kill has been under strain; if they can patch up those issues, they could position themselves for a strong run.
