The Brantford Bulldogs Are An Absolute Wagon

The Brantford Bulldogs are 13-0-2-1 to start the season and own a plus-49 goal differential. Can anyone stop them this season in the OHL?

The Brantford Bulldogs cannot be stopped. You can’t stop them from scoring. You can’t stop them on the power play. You can’t stop them from picking up points in the standings every time out. They might not be perfect this season in terms of record, but they're pretty close.

The Ontario Hockey League’s top team and probably the best team in all of junior hockey right now is on an unimaginable roll to start the season. Through 16 games, the Bulldogs have won 13 games, but have gotten points in all 16 as they have yet to lose in regulation.

Brantford has scored a jaw-dropping 88 goals over their 16 games, averaging 5.5 goals per game. The team has outscored opponents by 49 goals to start the season and owns the league's best power play with a cartoonish 40.4% success rate.

Captain Jake O’Brien (SEA) leads the OHL with 24 assists and 32 points in just 14 games played after returning to the squad following NHL training camp. An average of 2.28 points per game is absurd, yet the NHL’s No. 8 overall pick from the last draft has made it look easy.

The Bulldogs also boast the league’s top goal scorer. Chicago Blackhawks first-round pick in 2024 Marek Vanacker has 15 goals in just 14 games. He is scoring on 23% of his shots to start the season.

First-year player Adam Benák (MIN) has also been a key driver of the offensive attack and is currently tied for third in the OHL with 27 points. His playmaking capabilities have been practically otherworldly as he’s collected 19 assists through his first 14 OHL games.

While Brantford is getting a ton out of its star players, there has been tremendous scoring depth, too. The team has 10 players in double digits for points already including newcomers Cooper Dennis and Edison Engle (WPG), who have made a seamless transition into the OHL.

If you thought Brantford was going to simply go with what they’ve got and be happy with having the best scoring team in the league, they found a way to get better.

The Bulldogs made a blockbuster trade with the Oshawa Generals last week, securing Toronto Maple Leafs first-round pick Ben Danford and Zackary Sandhu, both defensemen, for three players and a staggering nine draft picks. Danford provides a solid two-way option with experience to play major minutes for the team, while Sandhu has size and shutdown capabilities.

Those two players bring more balance to a blue line that was heavier on puck movers and needed some defensive stalwarts.

With the arrival of Danford, Brantford now has four first-round NHL Draft picks on their roster with O’Brien, Vanacker, Danford and Adam Jiříček (STL). They also have a projected first-round pick for 2026 in Caleb Malhotra and a potential high pick in import addition Vladimír Dravecký.

The talent is boundless on this roster. Even the goalies have been in on the action of pushing this team to the next level.

Buffalo Sabres prospect Ryerson Leenders has a .930 save percentage through eight appearances, while David Egorov has a .915 mark in seven games played. The tandem has been absolutely dialed in.

The Danford/Sandhu trade put the rest of the OHL on notice. Brantford is not comfortable sitting on this start. This is a team driven by their championship aspirations and making the most of what could be one of the best teams they ever put on the ice in the Black and Gold.

The Bulldogs organization is only four seasons removed from winning the OHL title with a team, then based in Hamilton, led by the likes of Mason McTavish, Arber Xhexaj and Logan Morrison. But what we’re seeing out of this year’s edition in Brantford looks like it could surpass what that group did.

There are few teams that are going to match not only the star power, but what this team is producing on the ice. Sometimes the best teams on paper are just the best teams. This seems to be the case with the Brantford Bulldogs.

They are back in action on FloHockey on Thursday for a road date with the Peterborough Petes. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m. ET.
