The Philadelphia Flyers have sent Jett Luchanko back to the Guelph Storm after a four-game stint with the club to start the season. The 19-year-old speedster got four games with the Flyers at the start of last season, too, but ultimately went back to junior.

The 2024 13th overall pick registered no points over his four games and just one shot on goal while averaging 8:58 of ice time. It seemed as though his return to junior was inevitable and likely the best move for his long-term development.

Luchanko is a dynamic skater with explosive speed and a good work ethic away from the puck. It’s easy to see why the Flyers wanted to give him a chance to crack their roster. His speed and tenacity can be traits that translate well to the pro ranks, but still need some refining.

Luchanko’s return to Guelph is especially welcome as the team trudges through a 6-5-2 start where they’ve allowed more goals than they’ve scored over the course of the season. The Storm currently sit eighth in the Western Conference.

Getting their captain back will certainly provide a boost and likely some additional scoring pop as they look to get back on track.

Last season, Luchanko registered 56 points in 46 games. He made Canada’s roster for the World Junior Championship and even saw some action in the AHL at the end of last season, registering three assists in nine games with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

There is plenty more for Luchanko to build on, not the least of which is refining his offensive game to try to become a more consistent scorer. He’s a good two-way center with a lot of strong traits, but if he can enhance his production this year, his trip back to junior will have been well worth it.

Luchanko’s return to the OHL is good news for Hockey Canada as they will surely have interest in bringing him back for the World Juniors in December. He will look to help Canada improve on a disappointing quarterfinal exit and his own performance which saw him score just one goal over five games at the event.

Guelph returns to action on Thursday night as they hit the road to take on the Erie Otters. You can watch Luchanko’s return live on FloHockey.
